I miss hedgehogs. Used to get them in our garden every so often. Haven't even seen one in decades. I assume destruction of habitat + cars took their toll.

It’s really weird (and sad) that the stories I read my 2 year old are about native British animals that she’ll likely never actually see in the wild.

It's weird. I have seen more (alive) hedgehogs in the last five years than I had in the previous 30. They seem to be going up to more houses (even ones in housing estates) looking for food. They even launched a website here to help track their movements and report sightings.

Yeah I'd not seen a wild one since I was a child (similar timeframe) then last 6 months I see them (or it, might be the same one) regularly at night to the extent I leave a dish of water out in front of the door. Suprised the hell out of me first time, having a cig at 12am and one just ambles past then turns into the front patio bit all 'allo guv'nah got any food?', I thought it was a rat at first.

When I was wee one of the best things about going to my grandmothers place in the country was the wall of butterfly eggs that would appear every summer, and getting woke up to come see some hatching. Now you see one a year if lucky, insects and spider populations are so low its killing a lot of other wildlife.

I think I already posted about it, but we have at least six hedgehogs living in or around our garden (two adults and four babies, that we've counted) after they took residence under next doors shed. We're just hoping that the surrounding gardens provide a large enough habitat for them all to live in without having to venture close to any roads. They're such adorable creatures, very tame and inquisitive.

Not seen any around our way but I'm guessing our turf is claimed by foxes (for the love of God put your rubbish bags out in the morning so I don't have to wade through nappies and worse strewn all over) Back in NZ hedgehogs were all over. Couldn't cross the road without passing a couple of recently flattened 'hogs and for that matter, your elusive white dog poo. Wonder if that' s still the case.

tbh the guardian's move towards transphobia happened after Rubbisher retired and got replaced as editor by an Australian woman who is extremely lib brained to the point where after the Brexit vote made Brexit the main topic for every day even over government corruption
