It is. A racing kit car that's a GRP monocoque body using Mini subframes, powertrain and running gear. Very ugly but very successful in competition.

It really bugged me that the front end didn't look right, it's a very similar car to the marcos, it's a Mini Jem (Gem?)

Aahh, good knowledge!

I did notice it had a different front end (with an Aston-shaped grille...) but I assumed it was some variation on the Marcos from kn3 of the later licensees.

The real thing that happened was he bought a Lotus Exige track car built / developed by Trackspec in California with ALL of the good pieces on a whim, popped the motor the first day out, K24 swapped it, tracked it for a bit, then sold it thinking it wasn't anything super special. That was after a friend and I explained to him that he'd basically lucked into the pinnacle for mortals with the Trackspec Exige and pretty much everything he drove would be downhill from then on.

Handful of cars later and he is still trying to recapture that magic.

:negative: Good luck that car is the dream for a LOT of people. If I wasn't stupid I'd have something like that instead of the cayman and caterham. I'm still hoping elise prices return to semi-reasonable, I'd love to swap the cayman for one.

I seem to recal seeing a youtube video saying that these Omaze car raffle things are kind of a scam-- and I haven't read the details of how much of the money raised actually goes to the ACLU, but maybe it's a good cause for a slim chance to win a neat car.

Edit: am I reading that right? only 15% goes to the designated charity? Enormous scam.

https://enter.omaze.com/buick-grand-national/ posted:

(b) Where your donation goes: For Omaze Owned Experiences, like this one, 15% of the total donations goes to the Designated Grantee(s) via a grant from CAF America. (If there are multiple Designated Grantees, then this amount is equally distributed to each). CAF America retains a small percentage of the total donations (less than 1%) to cover its own operating costs. Omaze uses the remaining amount to pay for the Experience costs, such as Prize costs, payment processing fees, and advertising to awesome people like you, and to cover our operating costs of providing and maintaining the technology and team that makes this all happen. Owned Experiences have higher costs associated with prizing and promotion, which is why a larger percentage goes to Experience costs.

A bunch of pricks were running this scam in Australia too. It's kinda disappeared for now unless my social media activities aren't lining up with their bullshit sponsored ads (or my reports of them being a scam actually got noticed).

They are technically 'legal' I think it the wording that they do donate proceeds, but they aren't a non-profit and take a substantial amount of the money for themselves and end up donating a token amount to RSL or something. Also LOL the last one I saw was selling off an 'Elanor' so wonder if a certain someones wife sued them over the name.

I dont believe RCR is Omaze (The LLC running the giveaway is Why Not You) and there's no pretense for charity there, any money is him and his channel to do what they want to do with it

I take it this is the first time you've looked into a "charity" and where the money actually goes.

That's actually better than average for these types of schemes. It's often an absolutely shameless single digit percentage.

Until I hear otherwise I'm just going to assume that RTJ made the same assumption most of us made about charities and that once they were informed, they'll do better next time.
