Why are you telling me this, compensatory were already awarded, I''m fully aware.

Multiplier is only for economic damages, the damages awared were non-economic. Alex Jones will only get 0-750k in punitive damages.

I would correct your statement to say either zero or $750k. The only way the end up with less than $750k in punitive damages is if they are awarded less than that, which I don't see happening. They'll award $150m in punitive now or something like that. I wonder if anyone will ask the jury how they feel after about Jones making half a billion off this lie (since this has gone on over a decade) while the people he hurt get less than $5m.

Don't think it's to unrealistic to think the jury might go all in on the punitive. Even if it gets cut down a lot by Texas law still be nice to see Jones get the max he can get on it.

Not doom posting, but he won't. I hope CT ends up being a higher figure, and that there is some fallout from the phone, and that other families decide to go after him too, but all that is iffy and none of it is going to result in him being broke.

Oh I know he won't, but in a good world he would be sanctioned for each individual lie with an exponentially increasing penalty for each.

One thing to think about - when they do finally get to trial in CT, when the plaintiffs have Jones on the stand, they're going to bring up his bragging about poisoning the jury with his "woe is me" poo poo, and if he denies it play his words to the jury.

Wonder if his legal team expects to get paid. Jones seemed genuinely shocked about the phone data but the way he said "so you DID get my emails" suggests that he and his team knew there was a possibility this would happen. Definitely would be surprised if that team gets another client in his life. They can't even throw a paralegal under the bus since they didn't do any of the legal kung fu that would have made the info protected in some way.

gently caress that jury decision though. At one point he was making $800,000 a day, so they've basically docked him a week's wages for siccing dangerous lunatics on grieving parents.

Reynal has already been paid. Most criminal defense attorneys only take cash up front earned in full the moment you ink your name to the paper. Reynal is, by trade, a criminal law guy.

Now, Jones definitely has grounds to sue Reynal for malpractice. Whether he does or not is up in the air. Reynal certainly has $1m-$5m in malpractice insurance, so they might not even hit his policy limit with this case.

Yeah, that would require the US to hold rich peoples' feet to the fire for crimes, and we just don't do that here. Our betters commit crimes for the good of themselves, and that's good for humanity or something.

The only way rich people are held accountable is if they mess with other rich people. If one of the victims belonged to an extremely wealthy family, Jones would have been hosed five ways from Sunday.

And know what? Even if yesterday was less than ideal, if Heslin and Lewis get some peace for goddamn once, I’m happy. Ultimately, they are the plaintiffs, not us*

So with that, I’ll watch. I presume it’ll be a bit dryer, but maybe a weird gem or two will appear. Plus inshallah, I will see the defense step on yet more rakes.

Once the link is live, I or a thousand goons will post it, and I’ll post it in the OP as per usual. Join us, won’t you?

Inasmuch as I'd love to see Alex get punished, at least people like him might be a bit more careful about what they're saying.

That is, if he'd stuck with a "Sandy Hook was done by the feds and Adam Lanza was a patsy" or "he was conditioned to do so", that'd be one thing, but the victims themselves were piled-on to be fake. Accuse the US government or the FBI of doing this, not on actual victims who will feel that pain.

A large part of this trial revolved around the fact that literally nobody outside Infowars had a good idea how much money Alex has. They still don't, really. Even by your standards this seems like a dumb and pointless thing to post.

Back when I was in college, I was part of the college's CGA* case competition team, where you compete against other teams from other colleges to prepare a 10-minute presentation for a group of judges (with two hours to prepare).

One of our judges had SIX designations after his name. I can see getting two or three, but six non-bullshit designations was incredibly intimidating.

seems like the real answer anyway is he has access to the rich that functionally translates to being infinitely wealthy. Sue him for his last dollar today and someone'll drop millions more in his bank account tomorrow. Garnish every penny he ever makes for the rest of his life and he'll spend it like the Pope, penniless in a gilded palace that is technically entirely owned by a legally distinct entity. You're not gonna hurt him through his wallet, time to try something else.
