If you look at per capita cabon emissions the US is easily in the top 10, and China is very low on that list.
it's fair for people to look at china's high overall emissions and continuing use of coal; the majority of the world's people have lower per capital emissions and many poorer countries are making serious efforts to avoid a coal-dependent strategy. making the point that america is obviously worse may be correct for arguing with americans, but the rest of the world are people too. the areas where china's climate policy lead are kind of untouchable are installation of renewable energy production capacity, scaling up and economizing the supply chain for renewable energy (e.g. pv panels, rare earths and other materials for windmills, vehicle electrification, etc.), building out modern passenger rail (both high speed intercity and metro), preparatory infrastructure for higher future renewables mixes (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pumped-storage_hydroelectric_power_stations#Under_construction for one example, also lots of investment into ultra high voltage transmission to get produced energy from the interior out to coastal cities that use a ton of it), commitment to nuclear energy, and things of that nature. in short, there's only one country on earth pursuing the climate strategy of maintaining low consumption, transitioning to low-input agriculture, and concentrating development efforts on educating large numbers of scientific and medical personnel to plan adaptation and relocation efforts, and that's cuba, and they're not really doing that by choice. everyone else is supposedly either still industrializing or pursing a strategy of investing industrial surpluses into renewables and electrifying energy use in transportation, housing, manufacturing, and agriculture, and switching land use patterns to sink carbon. well more than half the renewable energy capacity built out last year was in china. so what's going on here, is there a secret third plan or are a bunch of clowns flopping around

Cuba's the model if we ever want to beat climate change without some high tech doesn't exist yet/never will hope solution but even a socialist country like china wouldn't accept grocery stores stocked with only potatoes, and bananas. Three, four, heck five Gorges doesn't address consumption. What's the plan indeed.

Also all the cars are gas guzzlers from the 50s. Tractors with a red star on them are aesthetic tho despite the fuel economy.

The maximum rage of the PHL-03 is 160 km, theoretically able to reach parts of the straits but barely. The PHL-16 had reach the entire island (500km) but they are only 20+ but are rapidly being built. In addition, China has large stock piles of SRBMs and can obviously build more.

I assume the war game was run so they could write a news story about it, it is for public consumption.

As for the US “surging ahead”, the US will eventually have some next gen systems coming out, the problem is not only numbers and cost but so will likely the PLA, which isn’t standing still. The issue for China isn’t really tech and numbers (in my opinion) but allowing US the opening to arm Taiwan as much as possible then push independence. The liability is more political can anything.

Also, the big shift in “carbon reduction” in the states has been the shift from co2 production via coal to methane production via fracking, do a quick check on the effect methane has on climate change.

iirc china tried to cut down coal dependency in one massive swoop and that led to a bunch of people complaining when a few cities had electricity problems, and now they're going to phase it out more gradually while getting the infra for renewables online. there was an scmp article about it but i can't find it

It had more to do with Beijing tieing provincial official performance to low coal usage mandate, not the lack of coal or capability. And the Dongbei officials were doing aggressive California rolling blackout, so Beijing eased down on the emission mandate.

one thing I will say though, the sheer speed with which Chinese cars flooded and took over the Saudi market is really crazy to me, five years ago a Chinese car was a complete oddity but now easily half of all cars on the road are different Chinese car brands, even the rolls Royce of China, the HongQi made it here, it’s absolutely insane how quickly it happened.

How many of these are electric cars? I only know Chinese electric cars are making big gains in the oversea market. Haven't heard anything about the gas powered cars (old boys have too much patent protection).

none electric, all normal gas powered, off the top of my head the brands I’ve seen so far are

Chery, Geely, BYD, Bestune, HongQi, Forthing, Changa, Great Wall, Haval, GAC and others

the sudden appearance and ubiquity of these brands here was really shocking

oh man I just read the reports about Xi Jinpings visit to Saudi Arabia,

apparently they’re planning on throwing him a big party reception, the same kind of party they threw donald trump when he came over. even bigger because they plan on having him tour multiple cities, Riyadh, Jeddah and of course NEOM.

and Saudi officials are claiming that MBS’s ability to travel abroad and entertain big foreign guests again because Biden visiting him opened the door for him loooll
