They just helped her drive back out??? What the gently caress!

If I were one of those cops, I would simply drive the car back out myself. Except I'd be a cop, so instead I'd do the laziest thing and let the senile driver potentially run over some people or drive off the ledge.

If you rear-end someone then literally the only explanation is that you were following too close for the conditions.
|
# ? Aug 20, 2022 20:32 |

that is true, you should always leave enough distance between yourself and the car in front of you to safely come to a stop without hitting them if they suddenly slam on their brakes. rule of thumb is what, three seconds in sunny/dry conditions?

Also if you crash into anything then the only explanation is that you were driving too fast for the conditions. Doesn't matter if it starts out as a brake check, a child running out from behind a parked car, or a police barricade.

best kind of rear endings are at stoplights where the rear end in a top hat is clearly assuming that the driver in front of them is going to run a red light

I love leaving a safe amount of space and then getting aggressively tailgated because some shitass thinks all that space ahead means I could be going faster

oh hay car wreck story and elderly driver story, those are the best. i was stopped at a red light when i was hit. this was very confusing because i had checked my mirror and the car behind me had stopped already. in fact an elderly woman had gone full speed into the stopped cars hard enough that that car 3 back plowed into the car 2 back, into the car behind me, into me. we all pulled off to the side but she was completely out of it and just sitting there and then her car started moving when she passed out so i had to get into a moving car and hit the brakes for her so she didn't roll into oncoming traffic and die this is the best possible system and it's critical that we make sure our elders have the freedom to get around by making more car, car everywhere, asphalt oceans. how would they get to their doctors appointments if they didn't have car, huh? why do you hate nana, you monster.

E: I love being overtaken or kept up with by older people on e-bikes, while I'm lycra-ing on the bike paths (as is the rule here in NL). My late-60s neighbours have all bought e-bikes to extend their range and/or keep cycling for as long as possible. Bobstar has issued a correction as of 10:33 on Aug 21, 2022 |

The goal is actual infrastructure is that anyone can use it, it is also why “bike gutters” are nearly useless and why most North American bike infrastructure is disastrous. Also yeah the disabled/elderly thing is humorous considering getting on a bus is going to be much easier than drive a car.

When electric scooters first started appearing, a lot of people were riding them poorly just because... they had probably never ridden them before. Now everyone I see riding electric scooters (or EUCs or whatever) clearly rides them a lot and is perfectly courteous. I think there's the same situation with ebikes right now. Since the number of people who own them is still expanding rapidly, a large proportion of the people who have them at any given time just bought them and aren't used to them yet. Even if some people are being dumb with them right now, I'd still rather that people be riding ebikes rather than cars. And even if a lot of people are just riding them as a leisure activity, it's literally impossible to understate just how important it is just to 1) get more bikes on the roads and 2) increase the number of people who ride bikes even just SOME of the time in terms of changing how people think about bikes and bike infrastructure. If ebikes are the magic that can get the US to a point where a significant percentage of american adults ride bikes some of the time (and can get pissed off at drivers behaving shittily and the state of bike infrastructure) they could be the best thing to ever happen to cycling in the US mystes has issued a correction as of 17:29 on Aug 21, 2022 |

it is a mistake to create a monolithic category out of people identified by some trivial characteristic (whether it's wearing tight-fitting exercise clothing or having an electric motor installed on their bicycle) and a worse mistake to flatten all distinctions within such categories, assigning them all uniform beliefs, behaviors, etc. (e.g., "all spandex cyclists are 'rich white office dudes'" or "all e-bike riders are 17-50 and have 'zero sense of etiquette'"). All you are doing is making yourself angry against a person that only exists in your head. get this: some people own a carbon fiber road bike they use to post KOMs to Strava and also a cargo bike they use to take their kids to soccer practice. An exception is that category of people who use cars, because cars are totalizing. You can be a cyclist but when you're not using the bike you can be something else. cars and the network of support they require are so pervasive through the lives of their operators and the societies we all live in that none of us, at any time, can stop thinking about cars, our cars, that guy's car, the cars in the street I'm trying to cross, the millions of cars that make the air unfit to breathe and the cities impossible for humans to live in.
