Finally dove into this thread on a whim. After reading a couple dozen pages, I realized I can probably get some really cheap knockoff Lego sets. Are there certain brands I should look for? Do they generally come with all the pieces, or are some missing as a rule for this price point? And do they come with instructions, or should I just go to the Lego website and use those?

LOZ are pretty consistently good.

I've never had one come missing pieces, generally they come with a number of extra pieces (generally just the tiny ones, I think they assume you might drop some into the carpet/between floorboards).

The instructions are included. I find them a little more opaque than what you'd get with a Lego set, but not unreasonable, you just need to be kinda careful. The only ones I've bought are not actual Lego sets but original designs (or I guess copied off fan websites) so there's not a legit Lego alternative or anything.

One thing I will say is that it can be *very* hard to distinguish between a couple of the colours, which has led to some real frustration at times. (I am a bit red/green colourblind but my partner is normal and she doesn't do much better.)

I also have had good experiences with YourWobb. Note, however, that you will likely not get screenprinted bricks with the MOC sets (just unprinted standins), I can't speak to any other sets. I've also been able to contact them for missing bricks and got things sorted out no problem.

Additionally, you can contact Loy_Chen on reddit with your order number and they will help you get the pdf instructions for your order. If you are buying MOCs, please support the creator by buying the official instructions directly from the creator as well. Note that sometimes the MOCs on YourWobb are based on an older version of the official build instructions and you may be stuck without them; also substitutions sometimes occur and the pdf links for your order should mention those.

The parts are usually of a really good quality, although sometimes long flat parts can be a bit bendy and the tolerances for some of the more advanced MOC build techniques can be... trying. For the price difference and having a premade set, I can't imagine a better value though. Quite easy to pick up used official printed bricks as well if you want 'em.

thirding yourwobb, bought plenty of sets from them, super helpful - one order vanished (three cheap speeder bike sets) and they just sent me a new order no questions asked, so thumbs up from me.

I got one of those tensegrity sculptures off AE. It looks like the same one as on that site. The instructions were good, and it worked, but you can really see (especially in the big column of 2x1 bricks) how the tolerances are not as fine as on the real thing. You can kind of see that even in the listing photos.

i cant fix avs like this because idk the bbcode - HTML IS BS MAN
Got some stuff in yesterday:

This is a piece of poo poo. Crappily made and difficult to remove the battery compartment cover. Only the top two channels will work, the sides that the batteries rest against are weak, loose and too flexible - at first I thought it was the batteries weren’t making contact properly and jammed some styrofoam between the case and contact but that didn’t solve it. I also tried switching batteries into different configurations but it’s only the top two channels that work so maybe a short somewhere, I will pull it apart on the weekend and see if I can fix it.

Murder of crows tarot deck
I don’t know much about tarot but I bought these for a gift for my friend who has lots of different decks. I like birds so figured it was a nice choice, and since they aren’t shrink-wrapped I had a peak and they’re beautiful. Feel like proper cards and not thin plastic cards (playing cards I mean, that are all plastic and not plastic coated cardboard) that some Ali sellers have.

Also got another “hat rack” because I have too many caps - balding sucks. The last one I got was okay but only held 8 caps, i was just going to by more of them to put side-by-side but I like this new one, which holds 24 better. It seems like it will be less prone to all of the hats falling down if the door is slammed or the wind too strong.

What, you don't go camping in the nursing home?

I suppose it could be useful in those situations where someone is staying by a loved one's bedside all night, as an alternative to sleeping in a chair. Do hospitals even let you do that anymore? I suppose that's not universal, maybe some places still do.

Where I live they stopped allowing longer stays then an hour when the pandeminc started, and still don't allow them. I would assume that the same is true in china.

I ordered that exact same thing from that same store, and they sent it to Mexico for some reason. (For the record, I am in Hong Kong.) They acknowledged their mistake and told me to open a dispute and they'll refund me, but I'd rather have that goose.

Being out here in Hong Kong, the shipping from Aliexpress can be cheap, though there are probably some things we can't order here. But we also get free shipping from Amazon if it's over $49 USD, so it can be interesting to do comparison shopping.

Thanks to this thread, I recently made a big order and I can say I'm pretty happy with almost all of it. None of it was very interesting, but it was all useful. Some of these links might be reposts from stuff earlier in the thread.

:saddumb: You broke key rules of buying from AE - nothing safety related and nothing that goes into the body. The utensils are probably made of lead and poison. The sunglasses probably have bugger-all UV protection so the shade opens up your pupils for additional UV damage.
