After which spire ships giant fuckoff lasers started working correctly and they had to nerf the spire ships. Yeah, that patch note says it was doing 1400% extra damage, but that 1400% extra damage meant nothing because the beams weren't actually hitting their targets prior to the fix.

They'd spend ages trying to kill a single ship. Only when you got a critical mass of them together did they do any work. Now stuff is evaporating. Makes all the difference in the world.

Uh is there an up to date beginner’s guide for the ashes of erbus civ 4 mod? I have no idea what I’m doing because I never really played civ 4. I can normally get my first few cities going pretty good then something comes and pushes my poo poo in.

I remember hearing about a stellaris mod that makes it so you basically play as a science ship, star trek style. What's it called? Any good? Was it a weird dream I had once?

Oh wow, don't play Fall From Heaven without knowing how to play Civ 4 first, at least do one or two Civ 4 games first. Good to hear that mod is still alive. Looking back, Endless Legend failed at being Fall From Heaven, and even then it's been downhill for Amplitude ever since that peak. I liked everything about endless legend except the combat. It wasn't fun enough to micro, and auto would make you lose battles you knew you could easily micro a win out of.

Let me add on to this advice - stay away from the Master of Mana set of submods before you've played a few games of other FFH2 submods first. It tacks on a Caveman2Cosmos type resource system and vastly increases the fuckery going on with units which will be incredibly unhelpful for learning how to play when you're also trying to figure out what everything else also does.

Master of Mana is practically a different mod from FFH2 at this point. Hell, it's a practically a different game from Civ 4. I love it lots but people going into it expecting more Civ are in for a major shock.

Biggest tip I can give you is to enable timid animals in the Custom Game options(keeps animals from entering your borders.) Make sure to prioritize Hunting and build a bunch of Hunters to escort your settlers and also to explore the world. Never send a hunter off by themselves. Always at least 2 after the first 20 turns, and probably stacks of 3+ after the first 100 turns. Other then that, the world is very hostile and gets worse as the game progresses. More cities is good, and there are a lot of ways you can go in the tech tree. I usually go Mysticism first so that I can run God King, then I may go for Hunting -> Fellowship of Leaves, or Mining -> Runes of Kilmorph depending on the terrain. Pick up Agriculture -> Animal Husbandry either before or directly after Mysticism. If you can keep your starting scout alive long enough to get subdue animals (lets you capture animals, requires animal husbandry) you can capture Griffons, Pigs, and Bears which provide a large boon for early development of your cities. Don't be afraid to build a few more early scout and stack them together to explore a bit more. Scouts can handle early animals, but not giant spiders/elephants/wyrms/pegasus, tigers/gorillas are 50/50 depending on terrain and how promoted your scout is.

I looked around the description pages for them, said to myself Master of Mana xTended sounds cool, and tried that one. To add insult to injury my first civilization was the Frozen. You can guess how well that game went. I tried a couple more but the difficulty cliff was too much. I downloaded the original FFH2 then figuring that maybe an intermediate amount of changes would be more manageable. After a couple games with that I went with the Realms Beyond Rise From Erebus mod since it looked similar and oh hey Master of Mana was an outlier lol. I still want to try and get back into it someday but that fey mood just hasn't properly taken me yet.

Man, I wasn't aware of what a huge modding scene there was for Civ 4... are any of these worth getting it on sale for, or is it more a matter of "Yo, are you tired of playing thousands of hours of Civ 4? Well here's cavemen with laser guns"?
|
# ? Sep 9, 2022 05:38 |

Yes, Civ4 has an incredibly extensive mod scene since it's just about the most moddable AAA 4x game in existence. If you're into fantasy strategy games, check out Fall From Heaven 2, which is a fantasy total conversion adding things like magic, heroes, religions that matter, etc etc. It also has a bunch of further mods (Fall Further, etc) that will extend the game even more. EDIT: Slightly misread the question. Yes, absolutely get Civ4 on sale. It's IMO the best version of Civ to start with, and there are just absolute tons of high-quality mods for it. As long as you're not put off by Civ-style games, you'll get your money's worth out of it and then some. Zurai fucked around with this message at 05:49 on Sep 9, 2022 |

I'll +1 to saying that Civ 4 is worth getting on sale. Civ 4 with Fall From Heaven II is, in my opinion, the absolute peak of the series... and that's including Alpha Centauri.

It would be impossible to find a single conclusive answer, but Civ4 would absolutely be in the running for “which video game can provide the most hours of interesting play with a single purchase?”

Just make sure to buy a complete/gold/whatever edition that includes the two expansion packs. Most mods are going to require them anyway.

How multiplayer friendly is Civ4? I've managed to play all of them but 1 and 4, and 5-6 really.. doesn't work for multiplayer. Which is a shame, because that would relieve you of playing against the AI. And I'm using "AI" extremely generous here.

Generally fine, but extensive mods tend to desync every so often. I haven't played the latest succesor to FFH2 but i remember Rise from Erebus desyncing quite a bit.

The base game runs into desync problems too if the game goes on too long. Allegedly they were getting close to a mod solution to that last time I checked. But I don't think anything is going to fix desyncs with the dune mod. Unsurprisingly there are romance of the three kingdoms mods, a tohou mod, an alpha centauri mod, all kinds of stuff. One of the FFH2 modmods had a system where units fought for more than one turn! habituallyred fucked around with this message at 01:11 on Sep 11, 2022 |

You should be playing MP in pitboss mode if at all possible anyway, which should hopefully get around desync issues. Drives me crazy that each version of Civ at release was like "we didn't think to include the only method that makes long form multiplayer gaming tolerable lol"

Old World (also by Soren Johnson, lead designer on Civ4) is also on sale https://store.steampowered.com/app/597180/Old_World/. Think of it as a spiritual successor to Civ4 with some CK3-style characters and events added on. (Very much a 4X at its core though). Tech tree stops pre-gunpowder (imo the best era in Civ anyway). It has a play-by-cloud (basically pitboss except the save gets uploaded / downloaded from the cloud instead over email) which is a great way to play MP. A pretty vibrant play-by-cloud MP community as well. Pitboss / play-by-cloud / play-by-email is the best way to play 4X MP, imo. Network just runs into waiting for everyone's turn (boring) or a click fest / who-has-the-best-ping if you're playing with simul. alcaras fucked around with this message at 16:46 on Sep 9, 2022 |

Is there any way to tone down the background galaxy graphics in Endless Space 2? It's so prominent that it makes it difficult to read the map sometimes, and it makes it especially difficult to see which areas I've already revealed with probes.

They also overhaul the game systems with every major iteration so that also necessitates an overhaul of the synchronization code.

Never thought Sins 2 would come but I'm interested. https://www.pcgamer.com/sins-of-a-solar-empire-2-is-reaching-for-the-stars EDIT: Big change is that planets now orbit stars and have moons - the phase lanes will change over the course of the game as the planets move in real time. It will be an Epic exclusive for the first year which seems to be a year of early access starting in a few weeks if you pre-order. Still full mod support for total conversions built directly into the game. They intend to keep all the Sins 1 DLC content included in the base game.
