HELLO

I would blow Dane Cook posted:

I feel like some context needs to be attached to these big drug bust stories:

  • The people who smuggle drugs into Australia now that shipments are going to get caught, they aren't naïve, it's just a cost of doing business.
  • If the drug smugglers are so cocky that they are bringing in huge shipments like that they must be doing a roaring trade.
  • If this is the size of the stuff the police are catching, just imagine what's getting through.
  • Any dent in supply inevitably leads to an increase in the street price.
  • Busts like these always quote the street value of the bust (physical weight of the drugs divided by the weight of an average dose sold on the street multiplied by street price) which is misleading in so many different ways.
  • In Sydney they strip search 13 year old girls based on a suspicion of them having drugs.

Tune in next week for the next edition of Methamphetamine Media Watch.

At least with Heroin the amounts seized in a year pale in comparison to the amounts needed to support the known number of users.

I liked it better when I thought they meant frozen water. My brain concocted this whole scenario where importing ice chainsawed off the Ross Ice Shelf was becoming a lucrative trade, but it was made illegal to stem the shrinking of the Antarctic ice cap any more than global warming is already doing

Port Orange man arrested for trying to buy another child, police say

(Yes... another child)

quote:

A registered sex offender who tried to buy a child he saw in a Port Orange Walmart store for $200,000 four years ago is back behind bars, accused of offering to buy another child.

Helmuth Kolb, now 85, was arrested Thursday for violating his probation after he allegedly offered to buy an 8-year-old girl from her mother in a Port Orange Winn-Dixie store last week.

Police say Kolb told the child's mother how pretty the child was, then out in the parking lot yelled at the mother that he would buy the child for $100,000.

Huh, is that a crime? Not the buying a child bit, the shouting at a stranger to buy it bit
If he screams at some dude that he wants to hire him for a hit, is that attempted conspiracy to murder?
If he screams at a woman that he wants to pay her for sex, is that attempted prostitution?
I really gotta be more careful what I shout at random strangers in future

The shouting is the attempt. The things you describe would be solicitation of murder and prostitution respectively. There's some nuances from jurisdiction to jurisdiction I'm sure. But, yes, encouraging somebody else to commit a crime can be a crime even if it's done in an awkward way.

quote:

Federal prosecutors said the plot went like this: Spina bought a Super Bowl LI ring from an unidentified Pats player in 2017. (Spina, who will remain perfectly in character throughout the rest of this story, paid him with a bad check.) From that player, Spina learned that he could purchase smaller rings made for friends and family. After selling the player’s ring to a broker for $63,000, Spina posed as a Patriots player and ordered three more rings with “BRADY” on them. His story was that the rings were for Brady’s baby. He paid about $25K for the three rings. (An auction house later valued one at $29,750.
The broker then got nervous. To quote from the government release:

After agreeing to buy the three rings for $81,500—nearly three times what Spina paid for the rings—the buyer started to believe that Brady did not have nephews, and he tried to withdraw from the deal.
