I've been thinking about this for a while and the question i've come to think is: how can one test safe eyewear? Let's say for example protection against like a tattoo removal laser setup

Yeah that makes sense but the way I remember it Ali glasses have been tested a lot and have been good about UV. Many opticians will test them for free, it’s worth checking out and would help make the bargain shopping less stressful

Polycarbonate as a material is pretty highly absorptive of ultraviolet light. You’d have to go out of your way to make sunglasses that didn’t block most of it. I wouldn’t trust Aliexpress sunglasses, but that’s because of their mechanical properties, not the optical ones.

The common argument in favour of cheap sunglasses is that the material that lenses are made from is cheaper to source and cheaper to make uv blocking than uv transmissible. I'd still want to test that but all the knockoff Roy bans and bokleys I've gotten have been polycarbonate.

My rules for buying on (generic) Ali is to only buy things that I can test the quality on and that are cheap enough that I can throw them away if they fail. So, if you have access to a way to test UV protection then Ali sunglasses are fine. Otherwise they aren't. Now generic Ali isn't actually worse then generic Amazon marketplace, with the main upside of Amazon being the better returns policy. Buying on a known brand store on Ali is just as fine as buying one of the Brand's products on Amzon or a local outlet.

I'm currently contemplating a fairly expensive AliExpress purchase..... An IP video/intercom. It's basically the same thing and the same brand I'd get if I got a local installer to do it except a fraction of the cost of buying even just the hardware locally (and I can pull my own cat6 cables out to the gate thankyou very much) Does anyone have any idea the chance I get counterfeit Hikvision gear sent to me? Here's the listing I have shortlisted that has decent customer photos/etc https://a.aliexpress.com/_mK0cgz6 And before anyone mentions the rules - I'm gonna use my own PoE gear for power and they can live on their own subnet.

Of course you can't be sure of every single kind there is but generally they are alright. Edit: Also the pricier replica ones can be of basically the same quality as the original, I've posted about the Ray Bans I got before and those are extremely solid. Okay fine here's your drat sunglasses post If your sunglasses are plastic, there are essentially only two options for materials: acrylic or polycarbonate. Both of those will just naturally block UV somewhat, but here are your tests. My spectrometer can't go deep UV, but it can still show trends. Transmissive materials tend to have smooth, intuitive spectral characteristics, so if line looks like it's trending down, it probably is. Here are the contestants. Here is daylight today. It's a little cloudy, but I've noticed/compared with sunny days, and that doesn't really change the relative intensity of UV much, just the overall intensity. UV is on the left, and ideally we'd look a liiiittle bit further, but it's still representative. Here are the results. In all cases but the last one, they very obviously work well. That last one is the rose graduated one on the left in the image, and that is mostly a case of it just not having much tint at all. It doesn't do much and I don't use it. All of them are essentially invisible to IR, on the right. Those spiky bits can be used as a reference to compare how much attenuation there actually is. For polycarbonate, you can see it becomes fully opaque right outside the range of what I can measured. ante fucked around with this message at 18:51 on Aug 29, 2022 |
