Obviously function and safety has to come before aesthetics in that use case, but they did some actual architecture with Battersea, and the construction methods are so much cheaper now that you could make a nuclear Taj Mahal or something. They do it with the oil wells in California, and people will go out of their way to say "hey did you know there's an oil well in there, how cool is that?" even though living next to an oil well isn't great for VOC, but a little style goes a long way. About the closest new thing to that we have here is Shoreham Power Station, where the chimney is far taller than it needs to be to act as a coastal landmark (and even then the owners piss and moan about the increased maintenance cost of tall pipe). The only thing that has to do with your post is that Copenhagen has a combination waste incinerator/power plant/district heater/ski slope and people love it and fight to keep it open, it seems to work. Giant gothic BWR and zipline adventure park when?

There's the Sheffield ski center that burnt down. Every so often a news report comes out about how someone's going to really, honestly, reopen it soon and they always mention the fire but are careful not to say the word "insurance".

You can ski indoors on real snow in the UK in glorious Milton Keynes. It's actually quite good. Plenty good enough for learning. I did a "learn to ski in a day" thing before my first France trip and it was really good. I couldn't walk for 2 days afterwards though. OwlFancier posted:You would think it would be quite hard to set fire to a large pile of frozen water but seemingly not. The best swimming pool in Milton Keynes, "Dolphin Splashdown" burnt down years ago and was never rebuilt. I was always a bit confused by that.

Re folk music, Magpie Lane is pretty good (and how I learned that the Monkey Island music I remembered was actually a folk song, “Oh Brown Ale”). There’s a lot of good filk on youtube even if it appears to have all been recorded in the 1970s by the same like 3 people. Dawson’s Christian was my entry to the rabbit hole. If you like Mongolian throat singing, The Hu are very fun: link. The other one that YT keeps pushing into my playlist is Hrdza.

The most amusing thing about the Potters fire (which was apparently started deliberately, but caused no human casualties) is that the collapsed parts of the factory/warehouse complex got fairly quickly turned into brownfield social housing, with the formerly private access road named as Ned Ludd Close.Mebh posted:Also i think parliament should be chosen by mandatory cheese rolling competition on that steep loving hill. Somebody (I think it was that Supertanskiii who is a massive Keith outrider and lib who just recently said "Corbyn made me say that Israel did 9/11") dug up some thing where he did a speech in 2019 where he said, essentially "Say what you will about Tommy Robinson supporters, but they're right to hate the liberal left". Which, you know, yeah, he's right. Then there are other people saying that he's transphobic? I don't know, I haven't been able to find any transphobic things he's said, though I'm not saying that it doesn't exist. The really dark stuff seems to be that he worked to ruin the reputation of a woman one of his friends committed domestic violence against, and that he has a dire rep within his own union on handling matters of internal racism. Seems to be Chardine Taylor Stone on Twitter who has most of the goods. Yes, it's being weaponised by a bunch of awful centrist melts, but I was hearing fairly dire things on social media about him well before they started paying attention to him. In particular, his 2015 speech went down like a cup of cold sick in the more marginalised sections of the left precisely because the RMT under his leadership was doing such an awful job of representing them: https://twitter.com/chardinetaylor/status/1565374218962931712?s=21&t=QxKi4TjM4YXdrA5fT0ybbA Darth Walrus fucked around with this message at 05:55 on Sep 3, 2022 |

Yeah I don't want to defend him exactly 'cause I don't know enough about his history and it seems there's some dodgy poo poo there... but it's clear that many of those criticising him the loudest (obviously not the person whose tweets you quoted there) are simply seeking to delegitimise the whole worker movement, which is obviously just loving standard at this point. Sensible centrists supporting fascism over socialism as always.
