Mika is absolutely the best and most well-written attempt at "horribly damaged child soldier" in the franchise, in large part because they have him continually interact with and rub up against numerous types of people from various backgrounds to really sell exactly what his history and upbringing have turned him into. Heero and Setsuna never really spend any real time interacting with people who aren't as whackadoo as they are, barring extremely narrow and halfhearted interactions between Setsuna and Saji and Setsuna and Marina, the latter of which barely even count because she doesn't really interact with him so much as he rants at her and she gasps a lot.

I like Setsuna but he suffers from how he's handled in S2 and the movie and also suffers from being compared to Heero and Mika who are both way better.

I like Mika because his biggest goal is largely to become "normal" and not like, save the world or bring about peace. He just wants to learn to read, write and settle down with a farm. But also he's just an absolute little freak for whom turbo violence is and has always been part of his life so that's just second nature to him now.

It's a little more complicated than that - he both desires and fears another life, and the very cost of fighting for a better future makes that future less and less appealing until he just gives up on it and embraces self-annihilation. He's asked to choose between living as a mediocre, permanently disabled farmer and dying as an eighteen-metre-tall god of war, and he chooses the latter

mika and to a lesser extent heero feel more true-to-life in the sense that they have actual senses of humor and personality. they're cold and a bit sullen but theyre still recognizably people. setsuna is much more pop fiction-y, where he really is this completely emotionless blank slate who just goes 'i am gundam' over and over for most of s1. it doesnt ring very true to kids who have been through poo poo imo.

The episode after Mika permanently loses control of half his body, he tells Orga it’s a good thing cause he no longer has to conflict with himself about the path he should take, cause only one is open to him now.

He also talks to Kudelia about how he's going to try to come back alive, but he wants someone to look after Atra and their kid if he doesn't. It's a little too late, but he does try to chase something beyond fighting at the end.

I think when he told Orga that he revealed how much that conflict hurt him. chiasaur11 posted:That's exactly why I found Mika going back to his farm books right before the final battle so interesting. That was a dream Mika held on to even when it became impossible

Yeah, Mika going "oh this is great now I don't have to worry about that other stuff and can just focus on being a good weapon" always struck me as Mika simply bullshitting to try to keep people focused on their own things instead of worrying about him or trying to take him off the front line for his health. Even up to his last breath he was still thinking about why he was fighting and the place Orga was supposed to lead them to, which wouldn't have mattered to him at all if he had truly given up.

Hey just had a quick question and google is utterly failing me. The Cucuruz Doan movie is coming to theaters and Fandango is selling both adult and children's tickets for some reason. Is it tonally similar to the actual series or do I need to worry about orphans being vaporized with beam rifles? And also my partner has mild epilepsy, I know a lot of bigger anime films lately have kept any stroking or flashing to under a certain speed to avoid issues on that front but wanted to also ask if this did as well or if they should plan to just cover their eyes several times?

its essentially an extremely expanded version of the episode from the tv anime, so the content is similar. doan has some war flashbacks including one where you see a kid crying next to an adult's corpse, but i dont think any of doan's kids get blasted.

It's basically a straight adaptation/expansion of the original episode kinda but kinda not set in the Origin continuity, it's about the same.

I don't doubt Mika had regrets despite what he said. He's far more depressed after that point, probably cause he feels he will just be a useless lump if he does not pilot Barbatos

From what I remember when I saw it a few weeks ago it didn't have any terrible violence being done to children and no psychedelic full screen flashing. Lightning storms and laser guns were it. This random guy on the internet thinks you'll be okay.

I definitely agree that Setsuna feels less like a real person because he's so closed off, even compared to Heero or Mika; I don't agree that he has no personality or that he's an emotionless blank slate who just goes "I am Gundam" over and over. He only says "I am Gundam" or some variation thereof 3 times in the entire show (both seasons and the movie) for one, as far as I can tell after searching the sub files for every episode and the movie for any instance of the word Gundam. He does say something along those lines a few more times ("I...can't become a Gundam" after realizing he couldn't be the savior the 0 Gundam was to him because all the child soldiers he tried to save in a PTSD rage at some mobile suit pilots have died, "I will become a Gundam" after talking to Marina and deciding to rededicate himself to Celestial Being's cause next episode essentially, "Is that something a Gundam would do" when looking at what the Trinities have done etc.). Dialogue where he mentions "Gundam" in the context of an ideal, or as someone else puts it "He's trying to become a Gundam. The very embodiement of the eradication of conflict". There's maybe 9 or 10 instances of that kind of dialogue in the entire first season and none in the second or the movie. Setsuna does show emotion though, especially anger. He becomes irrationally angry at Ali a few times when encountering him because of how Ali had manipulated him in the past, gets pissed at the Thrones for attacking civilians and perverting the plan/goal as he interprets it, and as mentioned above for another example, becomes angry when he spots some child soldiers in Azadistan who are fighting Fantons, which gives him PTSD flashbacks to his own past. Since you mentioned the sullenness of the others though, it's obvious Setsuna is rather sullen about the war between Azadistan and the Republic of Krugis when first talking to Marina, while she tries to talk about the value of negotiations and all he can talk about is how people died while negotiations went on during the war. He also gets freaked out when Nina kisses him, because he has intimacy issues given that he killed his parents; issues he doesn't resolve until the epilogue of the movie, when he's able to embrace his mother figure, Marina. As I said, I agree the others feel more real and exhibit a broader array of emotions; even if those emotions are muted. I kind of don't care though, because I don't find Heero or Mika (or their shows) particularly interesting or entertaining. Setsuna is flatter, but despite that I find the things the show does with him both more entertaining and more interesting than either of the other two prominent examples of stoic child soldier protagonists in Gundam, so I like Setsuna more regardless. Gundam 00 is a very theatrical style of story telling, and while some of the other characters are more emotionally natural, the cast as a whole basically exist to embody themes, ideas etc. and not to feel real or have depth. Which I'm perfectly okay with.

Mika's not a bullshitter. It's kind of one of his defining traits. Dude's blunt about his intent, even pausing in mid-sentence to make sure he's telling someone he's about to murder the accurate explanation for why he's going to end things. Him giving up on any kind of normal life because it seemed easier, then going back to trying for it when things fell apart feels simpler to me than an intentional BS job.

Yeah, there's a lot to love in G-Reco in the character and mechanical design, the art and animation, it even has a really interesting setting but the pacing of the show is breakneck from start to finish and never really gives the time to explore any of the things it brings up; which kills it for me. I much prefer the slow pacing of Turn A personally, even though some people hate that. So I think perception probably depends on your preference for pacing to a large degree.
