Of all these flicks I still can't believe how ineptly made in particular Cosmic Sin and Apex are. Like Willis' mental state isn't even in the top 10 reasons those movies are absolute mega-dogshit. The former is too boring to watch but the latter is definitely worth checking out for how loving stupid it is.

It really feels like his agent was trying to make as much money as possible off of his name while he still could or something. Speaking of Willis, let me tell you about the time my mom rented color of night because it had Willis in it, without reading the back and then had a movie night with me… So loving awkward.

Picked up a Blu-Ray of Cliffhanger, which I hadn't seen in ages; a good bad movie. Had a realisation early on that I can't believe had never occurred to me before: the bad guys' plan is to kill the loyal Treasury agents on the jet, then do a mid-air transfer with the money to John Lithgow's plane and fly away. People who need to be involved: Rex Linn, his pilot, Lithgow, his pilot and co-pilot, and maybe a guy with a big hook to catch the cable. But for some reason Lithgow has also brought along about half a dozen psychopathic mercenaries armed with machine guns, grenade launchers and a shitload of C4, who could only be of any use to him if the plane happened to crash in the Rocky Mountains and he needed to force some plucky rescue climbers to help find the lost money cases. But how likely is that, right? Still, it's worth it for the done-for-real aerial stunt and the still gripping opening, as well as the scenery porn (shot in Italy rather than the real Rockies). Lithgow's gleefully cartoony villain is great fun too, with a collection of one-liners that sound like he'd come up with them ages ago and was waiting for any vaguely relevant excuse to use them. YouTube has various action scenes from the NC-17 workprint, which were cut down to bring it to an R (it's still pretty bloody and brutal even so), but unfortunately they're absolutely terrible copy-of-a-copy VHS quality.

Frank's (The late Ralph Waite) death in Cliffhanger is messed up. For a stupid movie, it's an affecting scene and Rooker absolutely sells pre-emptive grief and helplessness. Also, you tell the bit where Stallone shoots up through the ice was re-edited and that Rooker's character originally killed the baddie there. He throws aside a shotgun he hasn't used up to the point right before he runs over.

The shot of the first slo-mo room raid where the bullet rips through that one guy's cheek and it shreds open in glittery wonder as blood spills over the bottom letterbox bar was so good. Gorgeous bit of ultraviolence (which feels weird to acknowledge).

Similarly, Stallone's mega-leap across a chasm after the bridge gets blown up (which appeared in the trailer), that was expected to be the iconic moment of the movie on paper, lost test audiences because it crossed the line into being superhuman, so they chopped it up and used the clips in the later scene where he jumps down the mountainside while being chased by Travers. But how likely is that, right? It's too bad it's not a good movie - get rid of the henchmen and bad action, and you have a solid thriller. Michael Rooker gets put through the wringer and is constantly selfless, great role for him even though I felt his intensity didn't match Stallone's early on. It's weird because Stallone just seems to be part of a different movie the whole time. The done for real aerial scene is incredible because the pilot and inside job guy could have just parachuted with the money down to a waiting vehicle. Or even a waiting plane!

Fun fact, Cliffhanger is based on an incident that occured in the 70s in Yosemite where a random Cessna loaded with hundreds of pounds of marijuana went down in a remote frozen lake so the only people that could get to it were all the dirtbag climbers living in the park and by the time the next climbing season started the parking lot was filled with high end sports cars that all the climbers had bought.

I'm not gonna verify this because that absolutely rules. My only time in Yosemite, I was camping out at the climber tent area and some guy walked up and offered us a whole bunch of weed out of a paper bag, which we were happy to accept

Cliffhanger is definitely more about the setting and the characters than the action. Like, yea that opening stunt is pretty wild and there are some other decent action scenes but I don't think the movie would be as highly regarded without Lithgow and Rooker. Stallone is Stallone but I don't think he could've carried that movie on his own without a memorable villain and the excellent performance(as always) by Rooker.

It's probably a bit exaggerated, John Long (super famous climber with tons of first ascents in Yosemite who is credited with writing the premise of the movie) has a reputation for that but it has been verified by a bunch of climbers who were at Camp 4 at the time. Also oddly enough Stallone's climbing double did a ton of first ascents with John Long. If you like bad climbing movies, a hidden gem is K2 with Michael Biehn. None of it makes sense at all but it rocks, way back in my climbing days we would watch K2 or Cliffhanger before heading out to do dumb poo poo in the mountains.

Speaking of bad climbing movies, one of MY WIFE's favourite films is Vertical Limit, which I once watched with her; all I can remember about it is when Dr Bashir from DS9 got blown into red CGI paste by some overheated nitroglycerine. There's also The Eiger Sanction, based on a novel written as a mocking parody of ludicrous 60s/70s spy thrillers... which Clint Eastwood directed absolutely straight. Edit: The Eiger Sanction is about Dr Jonathan Hemlock, an art professor who is also a professional assassin and carries out hits for the US government in exchange for rare paintings. His boss, Yurasis Dragon (say it out loud), is an albino who has to stay in dark rooms lit only by red light because going into the sun will kill him. I stumbled on the opening scene of Vertical Limit on TV when I was probably 14 or so. I had no idea what the movie was or what it was about, and heights can get me feeling pretty spooked anyway, so it hit me pretty hard honestly. Then I just looked up that scene and it has one of the most unintentionally hilarious endings I've seen in a while: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0gx_D--iDw&t=205s The timing of the cut and the way he lands seriously make it look like he fell like 10, maybe 15 feet.

Nothing about that scene makes sense if it makes you feel better. The dad was clipped into an anchor comprised of several bolts which is completely bombproof and could have easily taken the combined weight of all 5 climbers in a fall. Also I am shocked that metolius didn't have a problem with their logo being seen on the cam (climbing gear) that failed since cams don't work that way. They tend to walk a bit if you aren't careful with placement but once force is applied to it it's never going to move if placed correctly and it's pretty common for them to be completely stuck after a big fall. Famously black diamond sued Cliffhanger since their logo was prominent on the buckle of the harness that fails at the beginning and the logo had to be cgi'd out

There is this Korean movie Alienoid which is some kind of sci-fi comedy fantasy action flick and it's quite nuts. It reminded me of Wong Jing in a good way, it's absolutely impossible to predict what will happen next. Like the opening scene, which seems pretty standard fantasy in 14th century Korea with a monster and a floating lady when suddenly a portal opens up, a big rear end SUV comes through, carrying Ultron and EVE from Wall-E who are aliens hunting other aliens who are locked up in human bodies And from there it gets a bit crazier.
