The biggest scandal in chess history was probably the reigning world champion allying with the Nazis and then being assassinated by the Soviets. Hard to top that one.

Stalemate was considered an imitation win, still a win just a lesser kind of win than a checkmate. At some point that changed to a draw but it used to be a win. Every day we stray further from the chess gods true light.

Or the 1978 world championship between Karpov and Korchnoi. quote:Karpov's team included Dr. Zukhar (a well known hypnotist), while Korchnoi enlisted the help of two American Ananda Marga yoga specialists who had recently been convicted of attempted murder and released on bail. There was more controversy off the board, with histrionics ranging from X-raying of chairs, protests about the flags used on the board, the inevitable hypnotism complaints and the mirror glasses used by Korchnoi. When Karpov's team sent him a blueberry yogurt during a game without any request for one by Karpov, the Korchnoi team protested, claiming it could be some kind of code. Also I'm pretty sure there was a candidates in the cold war era where the Soviet government basically ordered a player to lose by threatening his family. Can't remember which one specifically.

If Magnus had handled this more sensibly, at this point public opinion would probably be with him. Instead most people seem to be pro-Hans or at least pro-chaos now. After reading about how prevalent online cheating is, not only from Hans, I'm definitely on team chaos.

Haha, unless the governing bodies are somehow forcing him to sit on something, which isn't really how any of them work as far as I know, he's just being a child. Clear implication is as much of an accusation as an actual statement. It just makes you look like a goober in the process. What does he think the passive aggressive stuff is gaining him? Also, I'm assuming there's a difference between a default win and a resignation in his tournament agreement and that's why he logged in for one move... Unless he wanted maximum drama? T.C. posted:Haha, unless the governing bodies are somehow forcing him to sit on something, which isn't really how any of them work as far as I know, he's just being a child. I think Finegold brought up on his stream that one thing that could change in chess culture is this principle that the worst thing in the world is publicly accusing someone of cheating unless you have cold hard proof.. so like Chess.com can accuse people of cheating and ban them (although they usually don't do that very publicly) because they own all the evidence to back it up. It would be considered improper however for a dude playing in a chess.com event who was later revealed by chess.com to be the victim of an opponent cheating in that event to come out and say that they believed their opponent was cheating because that could ruin the guy's reputation and career and an accusation of that sort would be frowned on by chess culture. The point Ben was making is that you can have a situation where 50 different people all feel like someone is cheating in live OTB chess games and nobody says anything because of chess conventions against accusing people, whereas it may be helpful to have some avenue for open dialogue about the issue and then these issues could be looked at more thoroughly. That being said, I'm not sure that Magnus Carlsen feels bound by chess culture and the unwritten rules of playing chess the way that much less successful players do so I am confused as hell why he doesn't just come out and say what is clearly on his mind.

In fairness to him, it does seem like his strategy is working. I mean, everyone in chess is all talking about it.

Magnus is accusing, though. He's just doing it in a super childish way where it's impossible to address it. It's a passive aggressive thing where even if someone calls him on it he gets to pretend he wasn't accusing. But he'll loving wink while he's pretending. He's getting to accuse while trying to avoid all accountability for the thing he's doing. If he doesn't have proof he could still be an adult and say he's refusing to play the guy because he has no proof of anything but thinks something feels off about his game. He could also say something feels off but he's playing to maintain the spirit of the game because he has no proof of anything. Or maybe he has proof that he's not sharing for some wacky reason. After the first game I figured maybe he wasn't saying anything because it was being looked at by officials and he was leaving it to them. But it doesn't seem that way. Edit: also, I don't think there necessarily has to be a culture shift regarding cheating call outs in otb chess. I get the concern with online matches but it seems like it fifty players have suspicion about a player in otb you could reasonably dial up security and there's only so long a person could go without getting caught unless there was crazy inside job poo poo going on. Edit 2: also, really elaborate cheating systems make for great movies and books in the future, so not accusing people regularly helps with making that story better for my future enjoyment if it's what's happening T.C. fucked around with this message at 00:17 on Sep 20, 2022 |

Magnus has to come out and say something even if it's something as simple as "I don't believe someone when they say they've prepped a position i've never played". Chess.com are also behaving badly by not producing at least some evidence.
