I'm looking at MMI interface boxes to add Android Auto to my E88. There seem to be several brands ranging from a couple hundred to seven hundred dollars. Does anyone have any particular experience or recommendations about these?

The expensive ones from somewhere like Bimmertech are going to be pretty much the exact same as the cheap ones. I think there might be some minor differences between some of them but there's a pretty huge thread somewhere on the f30 section of bimmerpost about them where you can get some reviews.

I've installed andream units in my F15 X5 and my brother's F30 3 series. Very similar install for both, it was easier in the X5 just because the center stack is larger so it was easier to bury the unit inside. I think it's 99% good, just strange software glitches occasionally that worst case force me to reset the unit by holding the back button down. I could probably solve them by updating (18 months old) but I'm more scared of causing larger issues. For the money I think they're great upgrades.

You've probably found it, but this was the thread I skimmed before I went ahead and pulled the trigger.

I've never bought a roof rack before. BMW has a rack + snowboard carrier for ~$700. Seems like this is at least a few hundred cheaper than Thule or Yakima. Is there a reason to buy or not the BMW one for my X3?

I went on a 20 mile drive out of the city last Thursday, on a drive I've done many times, and the car randomly started vibrating quite harshly on the highway. No warning lights or anything but I pulled over and look around and didn't see anything wrong  Got back on the highway, floored it, felt fine until back up to highway speeds. Got off the highway and it was fine. I've put another 80 miles on the car since Thursday, including doing that same drive again, and it's felt fine since.

It's been a long time since I've owned a car with this many miles on it, and then it was a family owned one so I knew its history quite well. So "high miles, old age, used" is kinda unfamiliar territory for me :thunk:

So this has still been happening on and off since the beginning of last month, growing more frequent. And the 'misbehavior' is accompanied by a Service Engine Soon light each time now.

When I got a service engine light the first time I took it to my usual mechanic, they plugged in their ODB2 scanner but said there were no codes
Just dropped it off with a European specialist and this is what they pulled:

Spark plugs were allegedly replaced when I bought the car in April, so the misfire seems kinda weird/concerning. Items 3-5 seem like no biggie though

Misfires on my N55 have almost always been related to coils. Might be a good place to start.

I left it with them to diagnose further, but figured I'd do some digging about the various codes on my own.

Just terrible timing because I'm doing a 700+ mile road trip tomorrow.

I installed the blue Carplay MMI Prime thing from Bimmertech in July 2021 in my 2016 535 and it's had zero issues in that time. I always plug it into the USB cable though, so no idea if the wireless connection is decent. If I am ever motivated enough, I would re-route that USB cable to the glove box instead of having it randomly pop out by the cupholders.

Remember that these OLD cars :newlol: don't have traffic updates in the OEM NAV anymore - so carplay is a must have for road trips/commuting. :smith:

I think the BMW data bus is backwards and forwards compatible all the way back to the 1995/6 e39

You can install a BMW touchscreen display on a 2001 and newer land Rover discovery, or swap a 6 CD trunk unit from the 90s into any 2000s BMW

Same for Bentley and I think one other marque

I literally did the CarPlay thing last night, took about 5 minutes and cost me $54. The wireless is pretty responsive, I guess. No complaints. Also I get full screen CarPlay instead of sharing it with the bmw info.

Meh, when I bought it I said "as long as it's not worse than the Focus" rather than "better than" as it was intended to tide me over until the GR Corolla. But I kinda just wanna keep this now.

And they actually just called me back,. were able to reproduce the issue on their own and yea said they'll just replace the ignition coil. So hopefully my drive tomorrow is drama free.

OBD2 codes won't tell you much on modernish BMWs. You need something that can read the BMW extended codes from all the computers.

Your problem is definitely the cylinder 4 misfire. Just a coil/plug if you're lucky. An injector if you're not.

I was looking at the Android Auto MMI boxes and it looks like most of them plug into the AUX port, but there's one that connects internally to the CD changer optical input. I'm guessing that enabling the CD Changer will require some computer jiggery but is this something that is easy to have done?

I’ve got BMW roof bars for my 2017 F30 and honestly they look much better than third party designs and were cheaper than the Thule versions to boot. They should also be theoretically less impactful to fuel economy as they’re designed for that specific car but I have no hard data to conform or deny.

However if you want to use non-BMW equipment with them you will have to buy the appropriate T-bolts, as I did with my Thule bike carrier.

One decision to make is whether to replace TPMS sensors, possibly RDC controller and other janky overengineered faff.. or just code it to FTM (if that is possible). ABS sensing was totally fine on the old Mazda.

And with the rear seats down I can get a road bike in there with just the front wheel off. Keeping a hex wrench and caliper block in the trunk for convenience. It's not quite a hatchback, but it'll do.

Pleased to say it seems like it was just the coil, as I completed my ~900 miles of driving just now and did not break down :toot: Although on the way there I was experiencing some symptoms vaguely like what I first complained about back in late July/early August, so I suspect I'll need to replace the other coils sooner than later.

On my LCI e61 I was able to get the free "deep OBD for BMW and VAG" Android app to connect via a $12 Bluetooth Amazon jobbie. Super helpful once I got it set up.

My pre-LCI e91 needs to connect through a cheapie dcan cable and a USB OTG dongle. I haven't bothered to figure out why it won't connect wirelessly.

But yeah, you can do this very cheaply via a simple cable or BT adapter.

For :filez: INPA for sure, and maybe Rheingold is linked on the bimmergeeks site.

The right angles on the ‘kidneys’ are weird to me. Similar sort of thing about the angularness of the rear. But way better than the pig nose.

For BMW codes, I bought a like $30? Veepack obdii BT dongle and $50 or whatever on the Bimmerlink app which lets me pull everything and export it as pdf and poo poo
