First dominaria draft I've ever done went six wins with what I thought was a "white is open, everything else is chaos, picked up just enough blue and black and land support to not be Sad" so I'm really rather confused.

Come brawl, milord. Throwing together weird lists and playing in the jank queue is a ton of fun

I threw together a few dumbass decks and this one has been fun enough and good enough that I started looking for ways to improve it. Toxrill or Jin-Gitaxias or some other mythics would probably be better as ninjutsu payoffs but I don't have them yet. Sphinx or Hullbreaker or Mangler or Sludge still do the job, sneaking them in with Satoru's ninja powers is a rude surprise. Kaito's Pursuit has won me a few games and it cracks me up every time. Death by Mind Rot!

You’re in luck, friend! Here’s LegenVD’s list from a week ago:

Deck
1 Forest
5 Plains
1 Island
2 Wrenn and Seven
1 Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset
2 The Celestus
4 Deserted Beach
4 Overgrown Farmland
4 Wedding Announcement
3 Dreamroot Cascade
4 Spirited Companion
4 The Wandering Emperor
4 Tamiyo, Compleated Sage
1 Boseiju, Who Endures
1 Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire
1 Otawara, Soaring City
1 Extraction Specialist
2 Sanctuary Warden
2 Vivien on the Hunt
4 Spara's Headquarters
4 Urza Assembles the Titans
4 Joint Exploration
1 Ajani, Sleeper Agent

What you want is to get to Tamiyo’s ultimate, which makes everything so much easier and comboes well with Teferi. Ajani’s ultimate is also a cute wincon, since it works with planeswalkers. Vivien is great at establishing a board presence and can also sac a Spirited Companion to recur it with your one-of Extraction Specialist. Wrenn and Emperor do what they do best. The Sanctuary Wardens can remove loyalty counters to activate.

Warning though: Urza Assembles the Titans is great, but its third chapter only works once per turn. You can’t activate PW’s abilities three times in a turn.

I’m at 67% winrate in Plat right now with it and it’s fun. Watch LegenVD play it here:

I think my only problem with brawl is that I can look at a commander and immediately see that there is a "good" way to build it and a "fun" way. and if you build the fun way, you will only get matched up against good decks. And sometimes there are entire color pairs like simic where basically every commander does the same thing so I just wonder "why am I not using one of the better ones" or the commander basically builds the deck for you, like Ivy or Verazol or Rivaz

You can try making the fun version good, but that involves taking out all the fun cards and putting in all the good ones, until you basically end up re-inventing the wheel.

Like I wanted to try Jadzi, Oracle of Arcavios, but he's so expensive that I'm basically just making U/G ramp, with expensive stuff that he can cheat out with his magecraft ability. But you're ramping so much that you can just cast stuff. Unless you have a bunch of cheap instants and sorceries, but then you don't really care about playing those for 1. Also his back half is really bad, unless you have a way to return lands to your hand. you're basically just playing him for his colors, and using it as an excuse to make a "less powerful" U/G ramp deck because people won't play against your Uro deck anymore.

I'm leaving out the sabotages because the discard theme didn't come together, just playing Raven Man as a 2 drop.
The faithbonder/herbalist are duds, but my thought there is that it's safer to have five 2-drops instead of 3.
Is shadow prophecy bad if I can only get 2 domain?

3 Captain's Calls seems like it might be too much, even for this deck. I was considering dropping one, the shadow prophecy, and the faithbonder. Potentially adding back the 2nd barricade and maybe the aquifer for urborg.

I like cutting herbalist and adding gibbering barricade to help get value out of those captains calls. Prophecy for two is obviously not a good plan but you have enough defensive speed that you can get away with it. The other option would be librarian instead which is sort of like card advantage but with a body.

Honestly I’d say simic is probably the most egregious pair in terms of all kind of feeling similar. Other color pairs are much better in terms of giving you flexibility in terms of deck building. There’s pretty much one way to build a simic deck, but in something like orzhov or azorius you have more options. I blame green’s linearity

I brewed this for Standard two hours ago and love it if anyone's looking for a fun beatdown deck. It's surprisingly more consistent than I was expecting - Gaea's Might / Twinferno can close out games really fast.

This is where the original deck ended up, and I just hit mythic with it with a roughly 60% winrate against the field. Straight-up beatdown wasn't working against the hell sea of mono-Black so I tweaked it to make it a lot more resilient against removal. Basically the goal is to win with bigger creatures (5/3 Nishoba Brawler hits extremely fast, and Goyf/Stickfinger can get out of control really fast) before other decks can deal with them, while filling the graveyard to enable stuff like Greenwidow, Underdog, and Extraction Specialist.

The mana looks pretty janky but it's kept in check by the fact all of the spells in the deck are relatively cheap (hence no Sheoldred, Serra Paragon, etc). I cut Old Rutstien and Uurg because they weren't high-impact enough against Mono-black.

There aren't many non-creatures in the deck because the count needs to be high for Goyf/Stickfingers, but there are Leylines and Infernal Grasps to take out must-kills (again, Sheoldred and Paragon lol) and two Meatstick Massacres to clear the board.

In this draft format I have had matches decided by decking more often then in any set I remember. Maybe even including the one with a viable mill archetype.
I even just had the first time in several years of drafting on Arena where my 6-2 game wasn't decided by obvious screw/flood. Drew the last card in my deck and it gave me the 1 damage I needed for lethal.

Seriously tempted to start running 50 card decks or something. At least it will make cutting easier.

We went out for lunch and then we stopped for some bubble tea.
It's a total mess. You qualified through getting 6 wins (1 loss allowed) on day 2 of a qualifier weekend over the last couple months. 128 people make it to day 2, and to get into day 1 you need a high ladder finish or two win a play in or arena open (May was SNC sealed then draft, June was Standard, July was DMU draft, August was Alchemy). Since this is basically impossible, only 18 slots were filled. The remaining 14 were apparently picked based on winrates in Day 2 events.

Two entire people qualified through the August weekend:

e: here's the day 2 records of the at-large players for interest

e: looks like one of the weekends was explorer. maybe there was no standard. a guy had to get a bye because he was in queue for 2 hours with noone to play his 6th match against lol

This was a very easy draft, blue was so insanely open, I'm still reeling. White is basically a splash in my mono-blue build, with the only other splash being Ertai.

I won the first game rather decisively, facing a Braids that tried to make me choose to not have my lands go away but I just kept happily saccing my excess.

I'm not sure if I should play Impulse over Take up the Shield, both cards I'd be happy to draw late, with the latter ofc less always-useful tho if I don't have at least some board presence. I cut Stenn who isn't really doing much for me, could make a Geyser and/or Espionage cheaper I guess but that's about it. I could see putting Bone Splinters in as a Micromancer target, and the manabase should support it (I'm probably happy holding on to it until I get my black). Not super necessary, I think, but a consideration.

Thoughts?
So, finally finished this with a 4-3

My final two matches had me going against an Elf deck which drew at least 6 cards off their Leaf-Crowned Visionary, which I simply could not stop. I got them down to 5 with early aggression and my tempo cards, but then they just won. Credit where credit is due: amazing deck!

Last match was a bit of an oof; they had two artillery blasts, two citizen's arrest, a leyline binding, Rona's Vortex (kicked) and finally their own Geyser. I got them down to 3 with a Haunting Figment and a few outs (Micromancer and/or Shore Up) but they did win in the end with air power. Honestly infuriating to have literally all my big dudes hit by enchantment-based removal lol, but what can you do!

After a somewhat rough start to the format I've started to hit my stride, mostly drafting more controlling blue-based decks with the occasional aggressive white or red one. Got my first 7-0 of the format finally with this beast, Darien really is insane:

Still haven't been able to draft RG aggro/tempo once. Also while control generally feels good, I managed only 1-3 with this which I was sure was pretty busted:

Combination of not drawing in the right order + 3/4 games on the draw when packing a bunch of counterspells and inconsistent Geyser kicking hurt. Also made some misplays.

I did not have high hopes going in, hence the name -- I tried to draft Izzet aggro, but the payoffs didn't seem to be coming, and though I got some boros stuff, I also got blue and white cards that were more defensive and didn't mesh pretty well. I also ended up short on playables so I had to run the scry turtle lol (i didn't think I could support more white than what i had, maybe Love Song would have been better than Raff)

And yet

(Squee has now been in two trophy decks...)

Some of this was luck, there were at least two wins where the opp had to mull to 5 or clearly flooded out. But a lot of decks couldn't handle a swarm of fliers, even if they were mid:

This was the trophy clincher, beating a resolved full Herd Migration... I misplayed trying to swing in for lethal but miscounting creatures and then they started to dig back out with Urborg Repo, but whew Squee Escaping saved my rear end in these drawn-out games lol

I'm on Sentinel as the higher upside pick and you already have good ways to recur the Chaplain. I like Sleeper and think it's above average but you have a decent chance of making playables even if you don't end up running the Defender package.

(draft isn't loading on 17L for some reason)

This draft felt better than the last one, so I guess we'll see if my expectations are confounded again lol.

Boros core feels solid enough. It's unfortunate I can't support the black kickers very well, but it seems like supporting blue seems like it will have a bigger payoff? For that reason I've shaved one of the Benalish Sleepers and am running Goblin Picker and Yavimaya Steelcrusher... their stats aren't that much worse than sleeper, and they would work with Defiler of Instinct

Edit: trying to avoid immediately tilting after game 1 lol, i kept a hand with 3 plains because it had a benalish sleeper and I would draw into mountains eventually right

They were able to win by duplicating their Balmor twice and getting +9/+0 off one instant lol, trying to remember Brian Coval's suggestion to be happy for decks that got to do their cool thing

Then beat Chaplain, balance is restored

Even though they only had blue/black mana at first their first two creatures were Coral Colony and Academy Wall so I thought "this is probably Chaplain, time to use all my removal early lol"

7-1! Thanks for the help - manaworker pulled it's weight on kickers and was much more effective than my lonely dual land. Neither Braids nor Raven man did much except act as lighting rods for removal, but Cruelty of Gix and Archangel of Wrath were game enders. Most surprising card was Blight pile, with just one other wall in play it becomes something that needs to be answered - got one of the wins off it's back.

(after two awful games)

I felt I had a good basis for what was available, but maybe my picks weren't optimal (passing the red rare saga felt like a huge mistake among many). I definitely know my 1st deck was at, most generously, ambituous. 2nd deck actually executed the instant/sorcery plan pretty well, but then I threw my 4th game with a bad attack where I did not count a token stack.

Anyway, rip into me. I did not read anything about this format. This is my 5th draft in this set cause I f2p.
