Another actor for that is Richard Gere. He's almost always the worst actor in a good project and the best actor in a bad one. Unlike Reeves, though, his quality of performance actually changes in reverse proportion to the quality of the movie. In big movies he sleepwalks half the time, but when he has to carry the movie he gives it his all.

I’ve always liked Keanu Reeves in movies. I don’t care that he was dumb in the Dracula movie. He was good in Speed and all the Matrix movies, and John Wick, and Constantine. Hes got natural charisma that over shadows his delivery or whatever. Like Arnold

Like Arnold He's been compared to Arnold Schwarzenegger before, and to a degree Nicholas Cage; all actors who are well known for being charismatic and kind of parodies of themselves but they're just prolific enough, professional enough (despite Cage's personal life issues and occasional on-set shenanigans, he seems to keep that off the set and stays 'quirky' rather than 'troublesome') and specialise in one particular role well enough that they work, despite the idea that they shouldn't be able to be taken seriously. Helps that Arnold basically had an entire genre perfectly suited for him (or vice versa?) and is quite happy to play a parody of himself because the kiddies love it. Zack Snyder is basically a director version, despite all the insane poo poo people say about him and his movies pretty much everyone who's worked with him has basically said they'd take a bullet for the guy.

I remember an anecdote at someone from a CGI FX firm that was like "normally when we're working on these shots we don't actually have any idea where they are in the film or what they mean, we just get told to do poo poo and we do it. Snyder came for a whole day, answered all our questions, just worked with us like any other part of the team and explained everything we were doing in context and it made things so much easier." I can imagine a lot of the big directors focusing on the craft of editing and the actual shoots and just running the CGI stuff through intermediaries, and it sounds miserable.

Perhaps not a coincidence that all three of these actors have, at one point or another, played direct parodies of themselves or their roles; Keanu in Always Be My Maybe, Schwarzenegger in Last Action Hero, Nic Cage just recently in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Which makes sense; anyone who gets pitched 'this character is a parody of your own roles' and takes it up is both A: clearly a person that's really good-natured and has a good sense of humor, and B: known as such a good-natured person that someone'll actually try pitching them that and feel like they're okay in doing so. Come to think of it, that holds through with other actors I can think of who've taken up parodies of their own roles, too. I've never heard a single bad thing said about Andre Braugher.

I'm kind of sad that Last Action Hero flopped. Because he had interesting string of films in the early 1990's: Terminator 2, Total Recall and LAH. Maybe his career could have taken new direction after LAH if it would have been more succesful. Instead his action films returned to form after that.

Wanna join me?" And then the dad does, in fact, join him

So what I'm reading here is that Keanu is a real world example of that anime trope about how hard work and determination can put you on an even playing field with prodigious talent.

Keanu is fine (not great but fine) as long as he doesn't try to do an accent like in Dracula or the time he put on a hell of a lot of bronzer and played a young Buddha in Little Buddha https://youtu.be/2QT4mFNVyzc

He was notoriously forced to hire an assistant that would wake him up and drag him out of bed during conditioning and choreography for The Matrix when the studio threatened to drop him for constantly being late. He's easy going, honest and polite person. That alone let him swing above his weight class in Hollywood.

Showing up, not being a fuckup, and never having the project fail because of you and your drama are the most valuable talents of all because they apply to every industry. If Keanu decided tomorrow to go into Hedge Funds instead, I’m sure his performance review would be some variation of “not a math genius, but he’s great with clients, all his co-workers at every level like him, he has a good feel for the market, and he manages risk well. He knew he needed to get a job done and wasn't hitting the mark, so he addressed the issue. Brendan Fraiser's recent resurgence is another one that feels a little weird. I also really liked him in the Mummy movies when I was in middle and high school, but the fawning I see for him over on reddit is a little nauseating. Many comments come off as almost infantilizing a grown adult with a successful career that took a slump after the "classic" action movie surge died down. Let's be honest, "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emporer" was not the high bar of cinema in the 2010s.
