Tevery Best posted:Yes, but this polling collapse seems to have happened fairly recently (survation was a swing of 16pp net over 24 days). How do you poo poo the bed so badly in a month on the job, especially when two weeks of that month were a national time out for the Queen's funeral? What caused the housing prices to fall, was it the tax cut announcements? What's that about pension cuts? Why are there calls for a no confidence vote? Is the Bank of England about to go bankrupt? Is the government insolvent? When did all of this happen she's been there a month or effectively two weeks This is literally the first and only thing she has done since she became PM and everybody hates it. The difference is that johnson was not a pure spiteful neoliberalism elemental and also was much better at presenting himself as a buffoon rather than just a giant intentional piece of poo poo. They spent months putting a new leader up and basically the first thing she has done is kill the queen, take two weeks off, then spit directly in the eye of every conservative voter personally.

A declaration of tax cuts worth almost £80bn. When that was announced, that was worth nearly $100bn, now it's worth $85bn. The crash of the pound and general fiscal malaise is that bankers may be evil, but they are smart. The way the tax cuts are being made cuts away at the parts of the state that help the markets function efficiently. If you see someone obviously incompetent about to poo poo the bed, you roll out of bed ASAP, and the markets indeed pulled their money out of the UK since it's being run by gibbering idiots.

Liz Truss walked up to that person on day one and knifed them in the stomach, then said "there, lots of lovely blood for all my vampire buddies!" and gave everyone a big, vacuous grin like this was perfectly normal and fine, no notes needed. Even the vampires have some basic sanity; slowly gouging the poor is evil but somewhat sustainable, Liz Truss just crippled the entire country immediately without understanding that there's supposed to be some sort of balance and kayfabe to all this. She's dangerously stupid to a speed and extent that has blindsided everyone.

What caused the housing prices to fall, was it the tax cut announcements? What's that about pension cuts? Why are there calls for a no confidence vote? Is the Bank of England about to go bankrupt? Is the government insolvent? When did all of this happen she's been there a month or effectively two weeks The tax cuts were "unfunded", or rather funded by debt, because they'd magically make growth happen apparently. This caused the markets to poo poo themselves, the value of the £ vs the $ dropped 5%, briefly hitting an all-time low of $1.03 on Monday, from about $1.13 on Friday morning before the mini-budget was announced/published. Bond prices went up, meaning people want more return for apparent additional risk on 10 & 30 year bonds because of that lack of confidence. Part of is the running up debt but part is that the mini-budget seemed to run contrary to what the Bank of England have been doing to try reduce inflation, and that conflict/confusion makes traders panic. And then on Tuesday the BoE were forced to buy a load of bonds (emergency QE, after a stated policy of QT). This was because the UK market is on the verge of collapse, like, the British pension pots seem to have come perilously close to going the way of Northern Rock in 2007. Which would be catastrophic. Banks & mortgage providers panicked because they expect a emergency in interest rates and pulled their products after market close on Monday. This seems to have caused about 10,000 pending house purchases to collapse. And when we do have the higher rates confirmed then obviously that means people can borrow less as the interest will be significantly higher. Which probably means the housing market deflates somewhat, or possibly even pops. All this means either the Tories u-turn on the budget, which seems unlikely, or they have to cut public spending to cover that £45bn hole from these tax cuts. And this is after almost 15 years of austerity as the policy de rigeur of the British government, so there is little fat to cut by way of "efficiency savings" so it's going to have to be public services. They've already announced benefits won't rise this year despite the high inflation and the energy crisis, but what else? The answer is the health service. TL;DR they did it by causing a run on the pound & nearly bankrupting the pension pots of millions, all to fund taxcuts for the 1%. And they did it in such a transparent way that even their own MPs are suddenly panicking. Oh, also they've basically hidden from public view since the mini-budget announcement when the markets really wanted to be reassured. They have just acted in about the worst way possible at every turn Ash Crimson posted:I guess there's something darkly humorous about someone in an advowedly socialist leaning thread advocating such an individualistic take In which Ash Crimson discovers left-libertarian thought for the first time

I don't honestly know what mechanism the tories have to dig out of this hole, they've essentially torpedoed their whole economic platform and I don't know if they can culture war their way out of it or who they would get to do it, they're stuck between the already unpopular johnson government approach and the wildly unpopular truss government approach.

I think even that might be outside their ideological range, at least the part where you promise some sort of benefit for the ingroup. I think they've been running the scapegoating of outgroups bit for a long time and it's only made everything worse for everyone. Genuinely think starmer might be better able to pull that off than the tories at this point. Like their best bet at the palingenetic ultranationalism thing I think was johnson and he's pissed about and not done anything with it because he's such a posh failson that he just wants to sit in the big chair and pretend like he's important. Hard to do the whole sweeping away of the old rotten politics thing when you're literally reheating the same bunch of assholes and there is nobody with any vision or competence because your entire organization has been a factory that generates worthless yes men for decades, and you're all utterly mired in the same plodding, sneering, odious little journalism club as everyone else in politics. I genuinely do not know if any of the established political players in the UK are capable of being proper fascists for the forseeable future, I can only envison it happening from wholly outside the current lot. Some of them might jump ship to it, but I genuinely think that the political system we have is so adept at producing the most boring, uninspiring and uninspired people imaginable that none of them actually have the energy to do a real fascism, just the same grinding bureaucratic misery that the system is set up to produce.
