Underworlds was fun from the few games I got to try but yeah they desperately need to slow down the release schedule and also not make it impossible to get older warbands / cards without spending eye-watering amounts of money on eBay.

Look for the any GW game on table top simulator and get the cards that way. I downloaded the ones I needed from Blackstone Fortress as my eBay copy lacked two cards that they kept with the minis.

I just want the new Skaven models mainly because they're new models and we're starved for new Skaven sculpts.

Guess I won't be getting them then, since they're rarely parted out for a decent price on eBay or other secondhand markets.

They don't release the warbands with the cards separately from the core sets. For a while they were eventually releasing just the models by themselves for use in Age of Sigmar, but those listings all were taken off the catalog a few months ago.

Ah gently caress me I've been waiting for them to release separately. :(

I think the thing with underworlds is that GW is hoping / have found that Rivals is popular, so most people (for some values of "most people" - meaning people who aren't really interested in top-level Championship play*) can literally only buy the warbands they're interested in and still play the game on equal footing with everyone else in a popular, fun play mode. I think the Gnarlwood box is a strong hint that this is how they're handling the game going forward, since it's all about easily-accessible Rivals play. It certainly seems like Rivals is catching on - online buzz seems to indicate that lots of local groups (including, I have to say, mine) have pivoted to a strong core of Rivals play - but whether it's "enough" to overcome the inertia of "Championship as the be-all and end-all of 'real' underworlds play" and keep the game afloat remains to be seen.

*Or, importantly, aren't chasing the brass ring of top-level Championship play even if they're not actually playing at that level. I have a local friend who collects but doesn't actually play who told me that "if you're not deck building you're not really playing underworlds," but then I play a few times a month and have a hell of a lot of fun and he never really did even before Corona, so.

Rivals is taking off because people are pretty done with chasing universal cards for deckbuilding. If they switched to Rivals permeantly I might miss the deckbuilding a little but it'd also be a huge incentive for people to get back in (and I am eyeing up those Grave Guard...)

I’ve been running an Underworlds meetup locally and we’ve switched entirely to Rivals or Rivals+/Clash of Warlords. Even the very experienced players don’t seem interested in full Championship format anymore.

Yeah I would love for Rivals to take off, the small warbands and quick playtime are both ideal for me but the combo of covid + new players bouncing as soon as they saw the price tag on deckbuilding seems to have completely killed the local Underworlds scene here. There's an official GW store like 40 minutes away and not even then do any events for it anymore.

Honestly I am always hesitant to check out specialist games from GW because it just seems like they have no clue how to keep them alive and generate interest in them long-term. Fun for a few kitchen table games but unless you've got a decent number of friends to rope into it for variety's sake most of them get stale fast. Blood Bowl and Kill Team seem to be doing OK here still but that's about it.

Yeah, we’ve really struggled to have any kind of regular scene, but what we have is unequivocally Rivals. It’s a shame because I love the game. Kill Team and Blood Bowl are the big ones here too, and so I’m starting to pick up Kill Team out of necessity.

How does Underworlds Rivals work? I googled it, and GW says it uses pre constructed decks, but I can't find an official GW source for what those deck lists are.

Specifically, I've got Mollog's Mob painted up. How do I find the preconstructed deck for that warband?

Yeah, our local group has switched almost entirely to Rivals as well, and it really makes the game much more accessible for casual and new players, and it's still very good fun. I'm probably one of the most "serious about underworlds" players locally, and I'm totally fine with not really ever playing Championship anymore. Rivals play definitely feels different to Championship play - it's more "puzzly" and "thinking about how to make the most of the janky hand you drew" rather than "figuring out how to get the netdeck you downloaded last night to poo poo out as much glory as possible," but it reminds me of early Shadespire play in a very good way. I just hope Rivals and events opening up can overcome the inertia of COVID and the weight of all the "game's dead" memes to keep GW from torpedoing the game.

You can find the Rivals rules sheet under FAQ's on the Community site, specifically here: https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/K8ve2UJVuX3Umf5i.pdf, and they've got decklists for all the Rivals decks currently in the game. Mollog doesn't have his own Rivals deck, since warbands released before Beastgrave weren't packaged with enough in-faction cards to make a legal deck, so you'd have to buy one of the prepackaged Rivals decks (just don't get Silent Menace 'cause it kind of sucks), or just pull card images off underworldsdb or wherever and build one of the other decks in the document.

IMO, it's all location dependent. Warcry is doing well, as is Titanicus and Necromunda, but they may not be doing well in your area, so it's all YMMV. Specialist/Boxed games all seem to do pretty well in general, with the exception of Aeronautica, which GW flubbed out of the gate and never really tried to correct, for whatever reason.

WHU is really the only game that relies on cards - they finally learned their lesson with NM and released both card packs as well as including the info on tables in the books, so you don't need to drop the money on the cards if you don't want to or can't find them. I will say that the NM card situation has cleared up quite a bit, and gang cards are pretty much always in stock, for the most part. Blood Bowl has a weird card situation going on with the extremely expensive team cards though - $30 USD for a half dozen or so positional reference cards, 8 Dirty Tricks, 8 Special Plays, and 20+ blank positional cards to fill in team info. Again, you don't need the cards, but $30 for what is essentially 16 usable cards is insane.

And of course, the Cursed City expansion which is $50 USD for a booklet, some tokens, and a what looks to be around 50 cards?

Cross posting w 40k thread:

I signed up for the Warhammer Alliance program for my school and part of the kit comes with five Assault Intercessors and a bunch of terrain to play Killteam with.

I’m going to use our 3D printer to make more terrain and have started prepping five of my own Intercessors to use as an opposing force (Deathwatch, so far really fun), however I realized that Intercessors Killteam are 5+1 Sergeant, so I need one Assault Sergeant and one regular Assault Intercessor, the latter preferably without pauldrons (I have Deathwatch pads).

Would someone here be able to sell me these two figures? The sergeant load out wouldn’t matter, though the Deathwatch opposite has a flame pistol and power weapon, so a different set up could be fun.

I'm dipping my toes into 6mm with some tiny Tau. Not sure if I'll ever play, but in case I do I have a question.

What's the deal with gun drones? The list says they are upgrades for units. Are they modeled as separate stands? When are they worth taking? Are they worth taking on Fire Warriors? (I know very little about epic 40k's rules so this question might not even make sense)

They're additional stands to the core unit. They add to the number of bases in the unit and give you some additional FF, as well as being AP4+, which is decent (though only within Assault Range.) 25 points for two bases is pretty good IMO, but I haven't played Tau, so can't back that up.

I was excited to play in a KT narrative league at my local. It’s set up nicely, well organized, most of the dudes (and the one lady) playing are cool. It's very hard, the habits (or whatever the head coverings are called) are modelled into the torsos, and you slide a little oval shaped face into it like a mask. There's no "insert head here" thing like almost every other model

edit: look at the part in the bottom middle, each torso has a front and back with the habit being split in two

Or any of the other ways this could go too, the idea of a god of excess and obsession is so much more interesting than just sex poo poo. I want to see people falling to Slaanesh because of anorexia, or obsessive interest in collecting kids toys, or a self-swallowing hikkikomori cycle or something like that. Anything where a normal interest becomes an obsession and then Slaanesh shows up to help it along. There's so much more interesting things you can do with that than most writers or gamers bother to experiment with.
