The only time I ever went there was in the middle of the afternoon before a flight and everyone seemed nice enough. quote:a friend of mine used to work there and got paid 12+tips so this is just another occasion where a goon assumes reality and is flat wrong about the outside world Hey I’m not assuming anything. Was just commenting on what I saw when I was there. Bartending and serving put me through school. They definitely have a “type” when it comes to their waitstaff and that’s a little “eh” but they’re going for a theme I guess. Frank Frank fucked around with this message at 00:20 on Oct 6, 2022 |

From what I recall, the food was better than average but incredibly overpriced. About average for a tourist trap/gimmick place downtown. I would have liked to have seen what the night life looked like back in my 20s for sure.

Guy earlier in this thread said the servers made $12+ tips which is pretty decent for serving jobs E: my wife manages a bar and still bartends sometimes and the place she works for covers walkouts and undertips + at %20 (to the server) at the restaurant’s expense. I know not all of them “get it” yet, but some are starting to come around. They also have a real healthcare plan and benefits. All of those things were unheard of 15 years ago. Hell the last place I bartended before I sold my soul to corporate America use to make the server pay for walkouts. It’s illegal? Don’t like it? Fine - you’re fired. Someone else won’t complain. Not saying restaurants are perfect now or anything, but it’s a hell of a lot better than it was. Frank Frank fucked around with this message at 01:10 on Oct 6, 2022 |

I'm just curious - does every table get a copy of the rules? Just tables they think will be problems? I've eaten at like thousands of restaurants from job site sandwich vans to three michelin star tasting menu joints and never have i ever seen anything as deranged as that handout

The only place I've seen that had "rules" like that only had one posted copy near the door. It's a small bar that took the "fancy metalhead" thing very seriously in like 2006 when they opened, they had only craft beer which was uncommon at the time, and then they got a lot of press for their burger, so they went all in on making 10oz hockey pucks on pretzel buns with a pile of poo poo on top. All the servers are tattooed women, they would show weird Japanese gore poo poo on the TVs and play death metal, all the burgers are named after metal bands. They either basically created this trend or they were copying it from somewhere outside Chicago, but it spread like crazy for a while and you couldn't find a burger that wasn't way too loving big anywhere. The rules were like "NO, WE WILL NOT PUT ON 'THE GAME'" and "NO, WE DO NOT HAVE MILLER LITE. DRINK AN IPA" The owners were at January 6th

The restaurant tipping "rules" are from a gimmick restaurant. It is supposed to be a silly joke as part of the grander scheme where they insult the customers with their "sass". Tipping culture and not paying a living wage etc. are both a horrible thing and a can of worms in every thread they are brought up. But they have nothing to do with these faux-aggressive rules in a touristy gimmick restaurant.

What's that other gimmick franchise where their whole schtick is that the servers are incredibly rude (and witty) towards you? Almost certain there isn't one here but I thought I remembered hearing about a "Dick's" or something, an American phenomenon that had a spot open up in Vancouver. I wonder what interviewing for that kind of position would be like. I bet it's really tough, like auditioning to play a drill instructor.

There's Dick's Last Resort, and the more regional Ed Debevic's. I can't imagine wanting to go on the gimmick alone but hey, different strokes.

Honestly, having grown up in that environment, any one of these is probably reasonably likely to be true. There's a common amount of obliviousness present in proselytizing like this, where getting the message out is the successful end goal regardless of how it's going to play to the person on the receiving end. It's also common to really be stingy with stuff like tips because it's not someone's *real* payment for doing their god-given honest work; whether this is more a general internalized feeling or someone going out of their way to be cruel probably depends on that specific person.

He then did an interview where he talked about how lucky he was to have a healthy baby which some people took to mean that he's happy it wasn't like the first one.
