Honestly I don't mind the caption thing that much, the dialogue was worse

Every line you chop off the end, the scene becomes better. No idea why they thought they had to spoonfeed a concept this simple this much.

They should have just kept going with it actually

"That is the name of a place that no longer exists."
"What should we call it instead?"
"We shall call it... MORDOR."
"Are you suggesting that right now is the dramatic moment when the infamous nation of Mordor comes into being?"
"Yes. Change all the signs."
"Right away, my lord."

then a time-lapse of a bunch of orcs repainting a highway sign to read "WELCOME TO MORDOR" while Danger Zone plays

e: poo poo i forgot "Mordor... has a nice ring to it", v important line

I liked the first few eps of Rings but fell off into other shows

I was assuming they were going to tell the story of Celebrimbor forging the rings, and Sauron's rise, similar to the Shadow of Mordor games?

But then someone mentioned they didn't have the rights to The Silmarillion? did they just make poo poo up and do something else completely?

they bought tolkein's appendices, which contain some of the silmarillion but not all. so the arc of the show will be the forging of the rings and the consequences thereof, and we've had hints of that direction already. but the first season's almost over and frankly not a ton happened

are people still watching it? i tried to watch the first episode, and i highly recommend people do it because it's such a fascinating film study of a billion loving dollars but they completely forgot to spend a dollar on a writer. it's like truly a spectacle in of itself that that happened

but after that novelty worn off, drat man it's loving dire in it's mediocrity. it also doesn't help that prequel lore is kinda boring because we all already know what happens to sauron and gladriel and poo poo.

The Unnamed One
Jan 13, 2012

"BOOM!"
The show could be cool if it actually was about Sauron seeding discord among the different peoples of Middle-Earth, and we had both his perspective and the ones trying to fight against or resist him, and the ones who are seduced by it.

Instead it's boring mystery box after boring mystery box and NOTHING loving HAPPENS

Seriously, after seven episodes I think the only thing that happened was a volcano blowing up, and a Balrog waking up ahead of schedule (and who knows if it will do anything)

The dwarves part rules, though

i presume half of it is grifted out, and other half is because everyone is pretty incompetent and gotta keep spending money to start over instead of starting with a clear and direct vision for what everything should look like before a dollar is spent.

basically if you go into any project without knowing what the end product is going to be, you're goign to spend a bazillion bucks than if you went into it knowing exactly the work breakdown structure and allocations needed to produce whatever final product it is.

Most visual effects studios are being worked to the loving bone, so the artists and designers don't have time to make things look better, doesn't matter how expensive it is

The last bit of the Eric Jacobus interview with scott Adkins was incredible on this, hes doing mocao work and importing it into unreal/unity as a way to demo his talent and get hired for previz in movies + animations in video games

He did the mocap for kratos on top of previz in stuff like altered carbon + his own movies so it's real insightful hes merging the two

I think the bolded part is wildly important and people underestimate how much the end result is dependent on someone involved in the actual making of the work being there at every step of the process to ensure a creative vision is being carried out. Like, this lord of the rings show did not start with some screenwriter or director saying "I wanna make a lord of the rings tv show," it started with some loving psycho at Amazon putting together a PowerPoint using words like "content" and "Properties" and "streaming markets".

And I think if there's someone along the way who decides to make a project their own, something good can still come out of that. But over time, there is less opportunity for anything except the stuff that starts as PowerPoints.

i think most Universal-Disney-Amazon-Netflix poo poo is probably hopeless for this, the only thing that ends up making a semi-coherent movie out of PowerPoints is endless money flowing into it. but there's a reason why A24 movies like Midsommar or Pig or John Wick 1 were made on a budget of like $5 million bucks and compete with $500 million movies. sure it doesn't have fancy action or super visual effects per se, but you wouldn't notice it having the budget of a direct-to-vhs movie with glaringly obvious lazy green-screens and stuff
