A lot of the current Steam Deck discourse is going my head a bit at the moment, as I'm focused on just getting used to the device. I don't even know how to access a desktop state yet. But I just know I'm going to love it even if I exclusively use it "out of the box" just to play Deck Verified games. The first impressions here are as impressive as any new game system I've bought for years.

The main thing you want to do is to get your head to psychologically consider the device in the right way.

What I mean is that given the awesomeness of the hardware, you'll be mistakenly lured into thinking it acts like a handheld console.

It is not.

You're basically holding a handheld PC. This means all the tropes and experiences of PC gaming are here on this too.

Once you get that motion into your head, then I swear everything starts clicking into place, from not being mad if the odd game doesn't work without some graphics tweaks, to installing different applications in desktop mode or connection different peripherals to it via Bluetooth, etc.

what's the general process for playing games locked to other platforms, especially DRM'd platforms like Epic? boot desktop, install & open launcher, install game, open steam, add as non-steam game, switch to game mode, and play? (lol it cannot possibly be that simple)

what's the under-the-hood difference between game & desktop mode, anyway? i only know that they exist

Use heroic launcher or Lutris from the discovery store in the desktop mode. It’s pretty simple tbh

There are launchers called Heroic and Lutris which are what people use for other launchers, Lutris will give you the option of adding a game to Steam when you install it.

Nah, if you use it like a console, it works like a console. If you jailbreak your console it stops acting like a console too.

Playing supported steam games in game mode is like playing a nintendo.

Not so much without a keyboard, but it didn't occur to me at the time that they both use USB-C docks.

Well, with 90% of the games being unverified you've got this question in the back of your mind if one of your games is going to work.

A question of a game working on a console isn't even a thing. A game works, end of. If it doesn't then it's a HUGE deal.

That immediately makes it not work like a console and folk shouldn't go into it thinking it will. Especially as for each game folk will also wanna tweak the graphics settings to make sure the resolution and AA, etc are configured for docked/undocked usage.

You don't do that with consoles.

Yes, it's the little blue bag icon on the desktop. Both Heroic and Lutris can be installed from there.

*until you run into something that needs you to dig into winetricks or whatever it’s called to install specific extra .net or directx components, and then it varies from a little fussy but no big deal to tearing your hair out as you bang your head against a wall trying to make it work.

But considering the device is billed as a steam specific piece of kit it’s not like that’s an unforgivable sin.

Can anyone explain to me how to setup button chords? There's not much documentation on it out there and what there isn't doesn't make sense.

My use case is that I want an R3 Click to emit a Right Stick Click as usual, but I also want R3+L3 to take a screenshot. I figure I should assign a button chord to R3 click somewhere but then I get pretty lost.

It’s been a while but if you open the game and go to the controller options where you normally set them, there should be a gear there and that will have some other options, one of which will be something like “add other command” and you can stack them there. Pretty sure it only works on the back buttons though

Almost. Verified games in the "Great on Deck" category should largely work out of the box, but most games don't have great default control schemes (specifically shooters) and a lot of times you'll need to adjust in-game graphic options and/or set the frame limiter in the overlay performance tab to make them "look good" or at least not kill your battery in two hours, since very few games actually come with Deck optimized graphics settings.

But sure, there's a good chance that you can take any "Great on Deck" game and set the 30 FPS limiter and it will run just fine, and then you can go from there and tweak it as much as you want.

I've noticed some games change status recently as well, like Dead or Alive 6 was verified but apparently the story cutscenes didn't play properly and now its marked as unsupported.

As folk have mentioned. Not verified doesn't mean poo poo.

Plus, you still have to adjust the resolution settings in verified games, so yeah, it can act like a console, but you'd be gimping yourself in a lot of ways.

I have been treating my Deck as a portable console and it's working fine. I've only played Deck verified or Deck playable games and not had any problems at all. The Dock was also plug and play (hooked up to an LG OLED TV, with a A/V receiver and an AppleTV also plugged into it).

Just want to give people that are considering getting a Deck some reassurance, if you stay in the... bordered? garden things work great.

There's a lot of games that'll run fine by default but sometimes it requires some tinkering. I only do that if the framerate is unstable or if the battery is draining fast, though.

Yeah I get you.

Following the advice received earlier, I’ve just been exploring desktop mode for the first time and it was a genuine mind blowing experience. It really dawned on me that holy poo poo.. this really is a PC experience if you want it to be.

The vast majority of my time with this device is going to be in the “Plug and Play” deck verified walled garden. But knowing the option is there - near seamlessly - to take it into a traditional PC space is amazing. I already own the dock and I’m now thinking of picking up a monitor and M&KB to create a little dedicated docking station somewhere in the house.

The flexibility and execution of this device is astonishing to me.
