ilitarist posted:Maybe eventually they add some sort of espionage system which is probably on a checklist of things you should represent about the era. This might give some additional indirect control over the army, maybe it can cover developing plans for the attack etc. I really like the idea of hands-off warfare. Maybe I won't after I play the actual game but I don't want devs to compromise on it.

The US should have hilariously bad espionage like they did in real life during this time period.

Good espionage at the very least requires the game to lie to the player, which we've discussed (at length) why that's almost always a bad idea. I've not seen a game do it well other than games specifically about espionage. Stellaris I think was the best way to do it by saying "we don't know" about the other Empires until you got better intel.

Espionage designer, choose the colour of trenchcoat your spy wears, the quality of their shoes (cheaper wingtips are more easily detected!), and the amount of cigarettes they smoke while following their mark down a hazy alleyway

Pump it up! Do it! posted:I don't understand the obsession with the war system for the kind of game that Victoria is and having your tiny men move around on the map, the war system was extremely tedious in Vicky 2. The fun I got from these games is taking some random small country and painting the world my color and that's harder to do if you only have indirect control over what happens in wars. So I'm really leery about their changes if they're making it effectively impossible to fight the british as e.g. the sikhs because you can't win by luring stacks into mountains anymore.

One hour-ish to go. Question is if I have the patience to do the tutorials to get the basics or if it’s just better to dive right in.

You can set your armies to defensive and have generals with defensive traits which should make them try to force battle in favourable terrain I think. But generally speaking the idea is that maybe you shouldn't be able to win that war.

Same, OP. I just ran out of steam in my EU IV game last night trying to pick apart some opms with my mens on the map. I am unreasonably excited for this game and cannot wait to influence my nation to greatness.

Spiff put out a video where he took over all of capitalism and humiliated the Russian Empire in a war without fighting in said war as a released Jan Mayen. I think you will do just fine.

Two Beans posted:Spiff put out a video where he took over all of capitalism and humiliated the Russian Empire in a war without fighting in said war as a released Jan Mayen. I think you will do just fine. To be fair, I think a lot of that boiled down to the overpopulation debuffs being too small. In theory an overcrowded area suffers -100% pop growth (after a certain point), but Spiff had so many positive bonuses that he overwhelmed the -100% and crowded hundreds of thousands of people onto an island with a modern-day population of 35. Some of that stuff will probably shake out better in the future as balancing passes start to remove edge cases like that. Also the funny thing about the war is that Russia shot itself in the foot badly by mobilizing. They just didn't have the economy to actually do what they wanted to do, and Spiff set himself up to exploit the Russian raw resource production by building factories in his highly educated island nation and then turn those goods back around to Russia for a massive profit.
