Water is moisture, but not moisturizer. Moisturizer helps seal in the water so it doesn't immediately evaporate.

Not sure if it was recommended here but I've been reading Poorly Made in China, and it's pretty hilarious.

I read it a few years ago. I remember wondering how much was true. I figured some of the small things were true, like the story of a guy working on the line with a skin condition, and nobody wanted to take him off because management said that it'd be a punishment to remove him.
Or how Chinese group would tell Americans that they give the workers 2 days off. Chinese assumed that was per month and Americans assumed per week, but both probably knew what the other meant and they just wanted the fake cover story.

I saw someone use a similar dust blower thing and thought it'd be cool if Aliexpress had a knockoff compatible with Makita 18v batteries, and guess what!

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004765714913.html

Too expensive for me though when a $5 can of compressed air lasts for years. Seems ridiculous that it's somehow more expensive than an angle grinder or impact wrench. There's also a bigger one that looks like a small leafblower, which could be useful to get the snow off my car on exactly that one day when it's not wet and/or frozen

Please dont buy compressed air. Stop being cheap and buy the electric blower, all computer touchers/enthusiasts should own one. Absolute priceless investment.

You mean like for environmental reasons? Would shipping a gadget full of plastic and metal parts from China would be that much better?

A vacuum cleaner actually does a pretty good job of cleaning out the computer so I'll stick with that for now.

I read vacuum cleaners will build up dangerous amounts of static charge and could damage the computer? But things may have changed since I last needed to do that poo poo like 10 years ago

I use a small hand pump. Great for dust and saw dust and even fine particulate when I'm finishing.

Something like this:

Costs a buck, doesn't have a battery, and last more or less forever.

Yeah, it's not a great idea due to the static. Stick with canned air or a powered duster like the one linked. Also, don't let the fans spin super fast. It probably won't kill anything but there's always a chance.

Does it work well for USB-PD charging as well as data? I know they say it does up to 120W but it's Aliexpress after all :)

You don't already have a hair dryer around the house?
I think you can find one locally at a thrift shop for less than that blower costs.

Edit: That hand pump is a better idea, probably.

I'm surprised there's not a more mainstream company like Anker that makes these, I'm guessing must be patents or something?

I've had issues with the Lightning ones working once or twice and then never again (gave to my partner to use with her iPhone), but the USB-C and Micro-USB have all been pretty solid. The latest batch of USB-C ones I bought seem to be just a tiny bit too small to get a proper snug fit though, the little insert keep coming out of my phone's USB-C port unless I detach them kinda carefully.

They're really nice to have in the car or by the side of the bed so I can plug it in without having to look. The other major bonus is having one cable that charges pretty much everything; sadly I don't think anyone's ever going to make a mini-USB one so my PS Move controllers are going forever uncharged.

tater_salad posted:

Part of the draw for me is not putting wear on the USB port and keeping it from getting crudded up (I buy my phones secondhand and tend to use them for 4+ years)!

Question about the magnetic connectors.
1 Do the ali deals share the same standard or they are all different?
2 Do they have a 1 to 2 or 1 to 3 cable? I want to connect one cable to 4 (micro USB) bicycle lights

r u ready to WALK
Sep 29, 2001

they are pretty much all different, even from the same vendor so make sure to buy the cables and extra tips from the same listing

the closest i've got to what you ask for is https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001257220979.html and https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003760993208.html but it seems expensive for what you want to do

Magsafe has been around for years and i never heard this. Or had this. Even if it did you just wipe the connector clean before plugging it in.

I’ve had many MacBooks with metal shavings brought in or a broken staple or whatever preventing it from charging, or just cleaning it with alcohol would get lots of black gunk off the MagSafe connector
