The typical boomer marijuana opinion is that you used to smoke in the 60s and 70s, but it should stay illegal since it's more powerful now and it's a gateway drug to fentanyl use.

just gonna put it out there that all the people that I know that regularly smoke pot are professionals with mid-to-long careers, including me, and most of them have families as well, including me.

Your friends being shitheads who are too lazy to do anything isn't because of pot.

Most of the people I know who died of opiate abuse or got super hosed because of meth got started with their Ritalin or Adderall prescription, not smoking pot. Putting your kids on hard stims because they had "ADD" in 1991-1995 was definitely a boomer opinion.

Amphetamines being a gateway drug is gonna be a hard pill for a lot of people itt, I know.

Stop trying to entertain me and just tell me what your product is and why I should buy it! I have respect for a company that isn't trying to compete with 'content' and just wants to sell me a soda or a cell phone service, not a 'lifestyle' or ' moral'.

Back in the day there was differences between products so you could run an add with "45% less talcum powder in our milk!" Or "diaper cream: now lead free!"

Then the spoilsport FDA came along and homogenized everything, so all the products are the same and it comes down to branding.

I'm all for legalisation, though I dispute a couple of your points.

"Addictive behavior.. It can happen with almost anything."

Well, I guess so, though it's important to distinguish between the medical condition of drug addiction, causing life issues and generally requiring outside assistance to overcome, and the loose term "addiction" as applied to frequent indulgence in something one is keen on, e.g. "I'm addicted to shitposting."

THC, like afaik all mind altering drugs inducing euphoric states, is well known to tend to cause habituation and tolerance. Tolerance, in the medical sense, means the user needs increasingly more of the drug to get the same effects, and eventually to just have a "normal" mood state (hence the breakfast bhong for chronic users, I used to be one).

Some users used to (and probably still do) write articles claiming cannabis can't be addictive because there's no withdrawal. Wrong. The half-life of cannabis in brain tissue is long. So if a chronic user manages to stay off it a week, they still have significant THC in their system at the end of the week. It leaches out if the body slowly. Chronic cannabis users who are obliged to be drug tested will probably be aware of this.

Psychedelics are helpful and most people should try mushrooms once.

"Are helpful" is a big statement, as is "most people". Subjective benefit doesn't necessarily mean actual benefit. How many users have written down their world-shaking revelations when stoned, only to find on later re-reading them that they were just a bunch of crap that sounded D&M to a stoned person. I know I did.

And even if the stoner experience is helpful to some (which it probably is), all psychedelics have high addictivity potentials. So some of the many people who "try mushrooms once", in your projected drug "utopia", would thereby become full on drug addicts. I had a mate who took acid every day for years. It didn't do his mind much good. Read the appendix to Philip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly if you want to see a typical list of real life drug casualties (certain addict readers have somehow missed this). Or medical literature, there's a whole lot of it.

Also, a certain number of those with underlying psych issues, including the as-yet-undiagnosed, who use psychedelics, or even cannabis, even once (I know the latter is well researched), will literally have drug-induced psychotic states. Which in some cases don't go away after the drug wears off. :smith:

When I lived in California weed was legal, so I began buying edibles in bulk, and this was around the beginning of covid when lockdowns were strict everywhere. Everyone was bored and confused. During that time I was taking about 400mg — 800 mg of edibles a day. Long story short I stopped abruptly (why not, been hearing about no withdrawals my whole life!) and I swear I felt like I was dying nonstop for three goddamn weeks. The most debilitating headaches, burning in my gut, PROFUSE SWEATING, vomiting I’ve ever experienced. The worst part was I couldn’t eat, and could barely keep liquids down which is dangerous as gently caress. The hospitable had me pumped full of saline around the clock simply to keep me hydrated because I literally could not drink water without throwing it up for two weeks. Easily the scariest poo poo I’ve been through. The weirdest part of it all was that the only thing that relieved it INSTANTLY was a hot bath/shower, and the moment I turned off the water I felt like I was literally dying again. And thank god it didn’t last longer because the hospital told me they ran out of saline due to COVID rampaging at the time

I can’t imagine 400mg in a day, and I’ve been smoking daily for 15 years. That’s like chugging 15 red bulls and being surprised you feel bad.

To your point though: weed is absolutely addictive, but more of a lifestyle addiction than the substance itself. Although every time I quit for a few days I have insanely detailed dreams, which could be considered a withdrawal symptom.

1) so i wasn't coming from coke & weed, i was coming from crack and weird sex. The less than nothing feeling of one serotonin molecule bouncing around your rusty skull coupled with like shame and secrecy & trauma of motel stuff is a way worse hangover than alcohol, though not quite as bad as the hangover of meth binges.

2) so going to socially acceptable drinking in the alcoholism and suicide capital of japan (Akita, Akita) with an ipod full of slowcore was like finding jesus, shame & vice wise. PLUS, I was employed in Japan and had structure and walk-around-money in addition to the whole new perspective and that sense of being young and alive that travel affords. This was 2010 and it was impossible to find real work after school in the states, for me anyway. I didn't see a lot of the country but I got to know the town super well and my bartenders were some of the most kickass friends I've ever made.

I did miss weed tho. The only time it appeared in Akita was at a price of $100 a gram. So like 5x mark up. One time this Canadian offered me synthetic weed and I tried it and was really mad that he would share that trash with another human being.

Sure, but one doesn't really justify the other. My point was more, "all drugs can exacerbate and enable someone's worst habits." Flip side is you can be perfectly successful and happy taking about anything. So maybe weed brings out the schizophrenic issues in one friend and helps another to deal with social anxiety. Maybe coke derails someone's life or helps them meet a deadline and keep their livelihood. If you have addiction issues, they'll all loving kneecap you.

Despite that, my personal preference is the Portuguese approach to drug legalization.
