this kind of stuff recently came up in the physics thread the bit where his hand is supposedly significantly attenuating what's otherwise penetrating the lens and case this intensely is what makes me sceptical about this that's a fairly strong response, his hand shouldn't meaningfully alter what's going on citation: me Potato Salad has a new favorite as of 16:30 on Nov 3, 2022 |

yeah the discussion I've seen of it elsewhere is a bunch of people saying it's probably a fake (very easy to do with a filter) or if not, that it's made by someone who knows what they're doing but probably has a unhealthy disregard for their own safety, which apparently describes quite a lot of the people who'd be in a position to get something like that in the first place If it's real then they mightve burned their hand a bit, but unless they've had it sitting open for ages next to them, or done something dumb like held it right up to their eye to see what's inside, they're probably fine.

There was a good write up in the Cold War thread which I can’t be bothered to copy over. But the tldr is radiation should only produce bright spots, not bright and dark spots.

Which a rad source would not do. I was wrong it was the osha thread I was reading it in. I don't know enough/can't be hosed reading about this to assess the validity but here's the comment:quote:No, not on CMOS sensors, which have active pixels and individual column amplifiers, you would get RGB noise. CCD sensors would streak/boom. Anyway the original uploader has a second video where they appear to measure 35mSv/h, so very much a level that a fully informed dumbass might make a video like this for clout. For reference 50-100mSv per year is the acceptable limit for occupational exposure in most places. Something like the US Capital building has a background level of 85mSv/year just because of high levels of uranium in the granite. However this video doesn't have the the noise effect on the camera, so vOv https://i.imgur.com/BWlB6Wk.mp4

So we're talking 'a dental X-ray worth of exposure over 20 minutes' ish, I remain unimpressed
