If you would have told me Punisher War Journal ended up running for over 80 issues, I would have called you a dirty dirty liar. Jesus they had THREE long running Punisher books through 1996, along with a boatload of one-shots, graphic novels, limited series, multiple volumes of a comic showing his arsenal, and a gazillion guest appearances. I was never a Punisher fan but goddamn was this the definition of beating a dead horse.

I mean that was still in the era where an ongoing could go a long time. Though funnily enough war journal is just at the cusp of the end of that era

Not only that but Archie Meets the Punisher was handled by the same editorial team as said Punisher books (editor Dan Daley with Justin "Freddy Mendez" Gabrie as assistant editor)... which would kick off the chain of events of, when Gabrie presumably (going by the timing) got laid off when Marvel went bankrupt, led to him becoming editor on Archie's Sonic comics, playing a major role in why they were Like That during the late 90s/early 00s

You don't obviously don't gotta hand it to Dave Sim, however Punisherroach was pretty spot on for the early 90's.

It's like they have no idea what to do with the character and just keep throwing poo poo at the wall, kind of proving this guy from the letter was right and they should have retired the Punisher from the main MU back in the late 90's. Then let MAX be the last thing written using the character before finally shelving him permanently.

I'm now imaging a Punisher series where he kills criminals, steals their bodies and uses them to create monsters who are made go around to kill more criminals. It's very much a vicious cycle.

A story event where we end up with kid punisher, robot punisher, bigger a-hole punisher and other robot punisher and then punisher comes back and has to punish them all has merit. I mean it would've just been the epilogue to Welcome Back Frank writ large, but still could've been funny if ridiculously bombastic enough.

The Frank in the chest logo kills me every time. I always thought singling out Steve for it was a bit harsh given how many other artists were just as guilty as well (one sacred cow in particular seemed only to have one male face, best described as 'misshapen swivel-eyed loon'). Something I really didn't like though was the colouring on his Marvel work - don't know who was doing it but it was frequently flat and lifeless compared to that of his Vertigo stuff, no subtlety to it at all. Given the dreadful news today, I'd post something by Kevin O'Neill but I guess Torquemada in full on ranting horror mode probably isn't everyone's idea of a Funny Panel..!
