This probably isn't an accurate take. First, the tweet reporting that moderation staff lost their access is more than a week old. Those who weren't laid off probably have access back now. Second, it is likely that the tweet is referring to Twitter corporate full time employees and not to the large number of low paid contract workers in somewhere like Kuala Lumpur who actually crank through tweets and make simple decisions like "is this porn y/n?" If these people are still working then a lot of moderation can still happen, likely even the majority of it. The corporate full timers in Trust & Safety do things like make policy, monitor system metrics like rate of false positives/ false negatives and overall rate of bad content, and set up the workflows for the contract workers. They're well paid tech workers. They also adapt policy and processes to changes in the abuse environment. Without these people, eventually the low paid contractor workflows will break down / become ineffective, but that would take some time. Of course, with Elon rapidly and capriciously changing policy it may be very difficult to maintain the workflows for the low paid contract workers to continue working effectively.

I remember that being a big talking point/campaign promise when Trump was in office. Yeah but twitter has 'verified' these people, that's what they're calling the checkmark after all. They've engaged in a process where they're claiming the user behind this and the messages they send are 'verified'. I'll bet that may make a major legal difference.

It's crazy that he's still tweeting exclusively about this verification poo poo nonstop. Like there are no other ideas at all about trying to make it a service worth paying for or any other improvements for twitter in general. He's just spending all day trying not to turn into a corncob about this one loving thing and it's absolutely insane to see happen in real time.

I remember that being a big talking point/campaign promise when Trump was in office. There’s a line, and I think a lot of it has to do with “if something breaks the law, or commissions a crime, can the website delete it?” And it doesn’t always have to be a crime per se, it could just be “legally actionable,” like defamation. Someone imitated Tony LaRussa, so Twitter settled and agreed to come up with a verification process. No crime committed, and the remedy was something Twitter did voluntarily. So now if someone imitates Tony LaRussa AND they have a blue verification checkmark? Now Twitter’s breaching their settlement. Fun!

I remember that being a big talking point/campaign promise when Trump was in office. But! What happens when you start overtly making adjustments to the contents of your user's speech? Like adding check marks to "certify" their identity? Then you're engaging in conduct that goes beyond simply being a billboard. This become a novel legal exercise in what happens when you take something like "we totes think this guy/gal/company is cool because they gave us $8" and it turns out that you certified Piotr in Moscow to be the official account for Burger King worldwide, who tells everyone that you should not eat anything from the franchise because there was an accidental release of rat poison at the Burger King factory. What happens at that point? We're outside §230 protection, I think, because when contemplated some rando posting "I got food poisoning at a restaurant" on your service is one thing, actually promoting the account to be True and Geniune™ is quite another.

It probably wouldn't be too hard to figure out the remaining list of major advertisers with Twitter and to specifically do brand-damaging parodies of those businesses until they cut ties in order to speed up the death spiral.

What blows my mind about stuff like that fake Lockheed Martin thing, and the rest of these verification hiccups, is like, it was made hours ago and they have like 30 followers - how is this hitting the larger audience to even get traction? Is the algorithm so stupid that its promoting fakes as real? Like someone forgot to toggle the if_verified&name=closeenough flag or some poo poo? Or is this just journalists having a field day and they're all coming up with and amplifying it?
