Twitter basically has a huge neon sign over it now “your job is to make Elon Musk happy” This is largely true about any job but instead of a pretense of some other job or product you can brag about, it’s just producing reports that make the boss like you, rather than any other task. If Elon as an obvious non-coder is impressed by code that looks sufficiently complex, then the goal will be to write that. Performative “programmer” work as defined by a ten year old’s understanding of what building a website looks like. You’re better off just presenting a front than actually trying to do “hardcore” work and produce miracle products on timelines that make no sense. I can guarantee you there’s nothing more that engineers hate more than this. Especially the good engineers. I’ve seen teams get gutted after a bad manager’s series of decrees that make the job about busy work, not production. Plus the random firings and hirings, loss of benefits. There is nothing appealing about Twitter at this point. I wish I could see who was applying to work there.

Back in 2002, I used to do IT for a medical journal in Paris which was run by a Miss Faversham figure. She was an old lady who ran the entire operation from her flat via faxes and angry answering machine messages, and she made the four office staff's lives a misery. She micromanaged everything, insisting on being informed of every decision. So I automated the office without telling her what I was doing. I turned many 20-30 minute manual processes into tasks that just needed a few key presses, and at every stage it automatically bombarded the boss's fax machine with an overload of information. It allowed the office staff to take 3-4 hour lunch breaks so long as there was one person to answer the phones, and I ended up giving the boss a mini stroke, which meant she had no dealings with the office for many months. It was the smoothest the journal ever ran. I hope twitter do the same with Elmo, and just overload him with crap.
