here come the planes
you can still be competitive without being cutthroat, and trying to let everyone in the play session have fun is a good thing to be considerate about imo

you're still playing magic even if you're playing with pet cards, and everyone ganging up on the player who missed their first land drops so they get to sit around and wait an hour for everyone else to finish sucks

15 card decks would be an interesting format. You would need to agressivly ban certain cards, but if you tune it right you could end up with Wizard Chess. Just take all of the randomness out of the game and rely on 100% side boarding skill.

Wonder how it would actually look to play, in some ways for some hypertuned decks kinda feels like just cutting out the middleman of tutoring out every part and ramping and whatnot. just load your magic shotgun and unload and see who wins, swap some ammo and start game 2. still some variance with 8 cards to draw from. can we can add a dealer who has some river cards anyone can play once revealed?

That's clever, but doesn't work. What I meant is, why would anyone put down or judge other people's way of playing?

As for commander, I completely understand the appeal, as I tried to clarify, the only part I don't understand is the seemingly contradictory nature of wanting rules, but wanting freedom. If I were to play Commander I would absolutely want to just make up my own cards, at least most of them. I guess my only real question was why people don't make their own cards more

Okay so without venom or sarcasm: "rules" and "freedom" are sliding scales that you adjust until you find a balance you like. Commander sets the sliders in a place that people think is fun. Because making up 12/12 double strikers or whatever ignores the rules to a point where you are essentially the kid who has a force field that protects from everyone's improv guns.

Constraints are what make games fun (no not those kinds of constraints you sickos).

When you're a kid you can have fun for hours with no rules and a cardboard box, but then you get older and lose that. Turns out a little bit of structure goes a long way.

Also I'm not super competitive so I don't really play Magic just "to win". I have fun either way unless the experience itself is lovely. I mean I don't like EDH either, but that's a different story and not because it's "less competitive" or whatever.

Finding the right group for commander seems like it'd be the most important part, because I don't think I could bring myself to play against the dude that plays "all effects are targeted randomly: the deck," and I think literally every store I've been to has one regular who talks that up as their favorite commander deck and how it's so funny

It seems like one of those decks that’s just goofy fun once and everyone has a good laugh, then on subsequent plays it’s just met with groans.

Chaos IS fun in commander, but cards like thieves auction and scrambleverse are irritating to resolve and slow down already long games dramatically, so you should probably leave them out depending on the group.

IMO Magic, like any other game, is at its best when everyone is trying their best to win. I have a blast when everyone at my table is also doing sicko degenerate poo poo but I can’t stand politics and Rule 0 discussions.

When I was first getting into Commander I would play at my LGS and the games were all fun and everyone was nice but people would do pretty questionable poo poo like roll a dice to figure out attacks instead of attacking the guy on Ad Naus or putting all five of my FoF cards into one pile and telling me “remember this for later ;).” I’m glad there’s a hugely popular format for people who like to play like that, but it’s not for me.

Yea I’d rather watch someone stare at Naus pile for five minutes before going for it than play a game where one of these resolves lol.

Sometimes even the professional card game designers have a hard time making balanced and fun cards/sets/decks. The average person is not going to be a good card designer, or a worldbuilder, or an artist, or have the crew with good game knowledge to playtest with. It can also be hard to exercise restraint to not just print cards that perfectly do what you want, with a "downside" that is also exactly what you want.

Still, try it in limited! I've a had a lot of fun a couple of times with a group of friends where we each design 45 cards, print them out, shuffle them to make boosters and draft with them.
