My grandfather lost an apprentice to high tension wires once, the poor fool went out on his own to do a quick job without permission and without telling anyone and raised a survey antenna too close to a major transmission line, the antenna was not close enough or tall enough to touch the wires it was just close enough to become capacitively coupled to the transmission line and pull down enough power to kill him. My grandfather went to his grave blaming himself for his death it but I don't think there is anything he could have possibly done to prevent it.

I have a funny story - not at all violent but since we were talking about Terminator 2 it's still topical. I wonder if we should take this elsewhere or continue posting about it ITT? I also thought the 3D in Avatar looked great in theatres. Couldn't comment on it on TVs, since I don't know anyone loaded enough to have bought a 3D TV when they were briefly very popular. But the IMAX 3D experience was something else; that opening shot flying above the trees gave me legitimate vertigo to the point of gripping the armrests. Hands down, though, the BEST 3D theatre experience I've ever had, which I will absolutely jump at if it ever comes back to IMAX, was TRON: Legacy. I got tickets early enough to pick the sweet spot in the theatre (IIRC it's around rows J and K, seat 20), and the 3D treatment was astonishingly good and so fitting for the film. The shot where Flynn's son gets 'digitized' into the Grid and the whole screen pops out into these cubical pixels made me swoon. It was so loud but mixed perfectly, the music was so good... it was literally such sensory overload that my legs were shaking for like ten minutes after I left the theatre.

Humphreys posted:Avatar in 3D was also my first 3D movie and it was mind blowing! 3D Avatar is great but also probably the most challenging 3D movie I've seen. Pixar movies like Wreck It Ralph are pretty comfortable because most of the time they just add depth behind the frame with the occasional thing popping out at you. Not so with Avatar. You've got poo poo floating out of focus right in front of your face, giant holographic displays, tons of movement of the camera and everything on screen. Hell, practically the first shot is looking down the incredibly long tunnel of their spaceship. Makes Mad Max Fury Road seem tame by comparison. And despite all that, it's still easier than most of the lovely post conversation movies that weren't filmed with 3D in mind and just had it added in after the fact. I really need to get a projector so I can watch my 3D Blu-rays again.

Also big names like Scorsese and Tarantino are still working and profitable. They just make their stuff a lot slower instead of having a juggernaut studio employing thousands of people to release multiple projects a year.

Animation is weird because in the grand scheme of things it costs about the same amount no matter what you're drawing. So yeah, an episode of Azumanga Daioh probably costs more than an episode of Hannah Montana because teenagers and highschools already exist in the real world, but something like Akira cost about a third of what it cost to make Blade Runner. And I'm using Japanese animation for my examples because it has a wider range of genres, not because I'm a big weeb. That's just a coincidence

My problem with marvel movies is that they are completely sexless. All of the greatest adventure films -- Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Princess Bride, The Fifth Element -- have plenty of flirtation and passion and romance. Love is probably the most powerful human emotion -- and it's loving bizarre that it's totally absent from these movies that are trying to be modern epics. Some of the characters have girlfriends who appear for like 5 minutes, I'm sure just out of grudging acknowledgment to the comics, but they just hug and share a meaningful look and then the girlfriend gets shuffled away so the superhero can punch monsters for 235 minutes. You can show Black Widow hurling herself off a cliff to her death, but you can't show Spider-Man and MJ going at it in a closet like the horny teenagers they are? What's the deal? Mister Speaker posted:That's insane. How do you do anything without a director? The producer decides that the next Spiderman movie's climactic scene will be a huge battle in a vat of chocolate pudding. He then searches for a director and scriptwriter to come up with a way to get there. Meanwhile, he contracts out the CGI for the scene to get a head start on it.

Mister Speaker posted:That's insane. How do you do anything without a director? they tell the director "ok, by the end of the movie there will be 30 minutes where black panther fights a guy in a yellow version of his suit. make sure you get the characters to that point." they've already started rendering the battle scenes at that stage. it's why the battles always feel so disconnected from the rest of the film. e:

Mister Speaker posted:That's insane. How do you do anything without a director? I usually don't nitpick departures from the source material, but I thought the main character's love interest in the comics response to him pretending to be gay so he could get close to her ("What the gently caress, you creep?! gently caress off!") was way more appropriate and realistic than the movie version ("That's so sweet, let's gently caress!"). That was lazy and weird and kind of creepy.

I think it would be more fair to compare to the romantic subplots that were needlessly shoehorned into movies like Commando. Princess Bride and The Fifth Element had "love conquers all" as central elements of their scripts and Raiders is the only Indy film that even treats his female companion as anything more than a Bond-girl. I'm fine with making movies about love (or tits even. Remember how they used to put tits in movies for no reason?) but I'm kind of glad most of Hollywood, not just Marvel, has gotten away from making sure John Wick has a new girlfriend by the end of the film. ekuNNN posted:I find 3D to be very gimmicky, it's fun for the first few minutes but not worth sitting around with the glasses on your face

Mister Speaker posted:That's insane. How do you do anything without a director? It's not that insane when you actually do it. A lot of directors are unskilled with shooting VFX and action-heavy blockbusters and the turnaround time on filming is pretty tight. The VFX and stunt teams are often much better at it, so the director spends more time on the rest of the movie while the experts do what they do. Corridor Digital interviewed the Iron Fist stunt coordinator and they had all of their work ruined because the director changed a bunch of stuff and the editing was done incompetently so cool fights that the stunt team had already perfected now sucked. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TL_OUvTMFg
