This definitely raises eyebrows, and yea, maybe a real creep is behind the ad. But while it maybe a bad weird ad, it's certainly not "child porn/baby bondage", And certainly having a bunch of weirdos accuse you of csam and human trafficking or whatever is probably a good reason to fire your ad agency

The son of former NFL quarterback John Kitna was arrested on child porn charges and I'm hearing some weird blowback and subtle defense of the guy. I guess maybe because he's white, plays for Florida and supposedly the dad is super christiany. I also live in FL so that probably colors my experience since Go Gators but it's odd.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/35157399/gators-qb-jalen-kitna-post-bond-details-child-porn-case-emerge

The gist of it from these folks is that "maybe the girls were 17 or something and he didn't know" and "we don't know all the facts", which is slightly refreshing given how rabid these types usually are about everyone in the world being a pedophile. But the detail emerging in the article seem pretty damning and also involve physical abuse.

I haven't heard any talk radio stations touch on it, not even the sports talk shows.

They're too busy screeching about Balenciaga right now. Their contempt for this kind of thing is also proportional to how much they think the left likes/will defend it. There's no ideological capital in condemning a white Christian sportsball player of grooming or child porn. HOWEVER, had the player been black and given the most milquetost concern about systemic racism you better believe they'd be howling for blood about this guy.

In other news, I had a coworker go on a stupid right wing rant during our lunch break. I usually avoid the guy because he just goes on and on about anti mask/anti vaccine poo poo but it was raining and I had to sit inside for once. I'm just trying to play my little Zelda clone on my Steam deck when he's going on and on.

It started about how emts had to come check on a homeless guy who passed out drunk on the property (he was fine, thankfully). He complained that these people can get away with anything around here, and it's "not like this back in Idaho". Then he went on this rambling diatribe about the differences and causes of this problem:

-No cash bail
-Don't incarcerate vagrants
-Cops aren't allowed to do anything to these people
-Only blue states have this problem (we're in California) red states have common sense.
-This is all evident by the hordes of people leaving blue states in droves
-All of this is because the powers that be want your life unstable so you'll be forced to be dependent on their government welfare.

Online I won't hesitate to get in fruitless slap fights with these idiots, if anything to prove I'm willing to suck up as much oxygen arguing about it as they are. But I was on my break, trying to enjoy my little game. If I argued with him then it would take away from my ME time and allow that rear end in a top hat to be a black hole of discourse. Taking to my wife later about it, she praised me for taking the high road and not getting in an ideological slap fight with a coworker.

But I was still angry. The rest of my shift I was fuming about it. Thinking of all the things I should have said. At the same time the gish galloping would have made it hard to even address all his points in the ~7 mins I had left to clap back. I don't even know which counties do/do not have cash bail-lots of places talked about it, doesn't mean they followed through. If you throw every indigent in jail you have to pay money to keep them there, and a lot of reform was due to the pragmatism of overcrowded prison-throw em in jail just isn't sustainable even if you wanted to. And of course I have no idea how exactly Idaho or all its individual counties handle this, their crime statistics, etc. Online you have the time and ability to look this up and address it at your own pace. In meatspace chuds like this can run a bully pulpit because most people don't want to waste their break time shutting it down. Ugh I'm still pissed off about it too.

Thanks, that means a lot to me. Sometimes I can't help but think that disingenuous chuds deliberately pick "inconvenient" moments to goad people into debates, because it forces a lot of variables to consider.

Like in my case some of these guys are notoriously thin skinned. Two other coworkers got in a similarly dumb argument where an evangelical worker sea lioned about atheism which had an atheist coworker take the bait, started disagreeing with the evangelist who then went crying to the union saying he's being harassed for his religious beliefs. Now the good news is nothing bad came of this for the atheist but it involved a LOT of "concerned talks" tit for tat he said she said middle school drama, wild legal threats, the atheist being strongly encouraged (but not forced) to change his schedule just to keep the peace, etc. Nothing came of this argument but the atheist worker was incredibly stressed out for two months over all this drama. So in that case, a person wanted to stand up for themselves, and the toll they had to pay for that effort was two months of pointless stressful drama. Would you say that's a good deal? Well it depends, right? Since we're not living in a vacuum and have plenty of other things we need to think about in our day to day life. This is an extreme example but it's a variable I need to consider during my lunch break in these situations.

There's rarely a "convenient moment" to get into this poo poo, which leads to a lot of "no political discussions at ____________ (parties, work, thanksgiving, christmas, family vacations)" self imposed and agreed upon rules. In my experience, it's almost always the Limbaugh listening dittohead MAGA's that can't stick with the program because god dammit their freedom of speech and man are they RIGHT about poo poo but mostly because they center their entire identities around it. So we get a lot of American flags, open carrying, edgy t-shirts and poo poo like that. They also like to frame or express their opinions with "jokes".

I'm rather left leaning and liberal but I don't introduce myself that way nor project it to the world every loving chance I get and fill my yard with flags or adorn my car with stickers letting everyone know how much I like Bernie Sanders and FDR.

...

And, yes, it's always funny to me how, for all their talk about easily triggered snowflakes everywhere or political correctness running amok, conservatives and religious types are remarkably quick to take offense and feel picked on. They're WAY more easily offended than I am. One f-bomb or taking Christ's name in vain will get that ball rolling, don't even worry about it.

I just pick my spots, gauge my energy, consider the source and make sure I know wtf I am talking about before I start shooting off my mouth, which wasn't always the case for me, and typically limit my barbs to things like fact correction and/or sarcastic jokes. These people are dug in pretty hard and incredibly brainwashed. I can't do much to fix that and totally disagree that it's my responsibility to always be trying and on the offensive about it.

I think it really depends on the crowd. In my case the chud was talking to an anti vaxxer coworker I had argued with previously, so if I said that they'd start whining about freeze peach and just escalate from there, with both of them arguing with me at the same time, talking over my responses, and just acting like ten year olds.

But yeah had it just been the two of us I probably would have just cut him off and be like '"Good thing I'm not scared of passed out drunks unlike some Karens around here" and not responded further, as though I was thinking out loud all along.

This is what I meant when I referred to how many of them center their entire identity around it. I think 24/7 FOX and talk radio has a LOT to do with it because no matter where they are, they can inject that poo poo into their veins. You also see it manifested in bumper stickers, yards, etc. and especially, down here where I live, in performative displays at the beach. Which I find off putting. I see these families or groups with their F150s in the sand taking the time to set up and fly anti Biden, Confederate flag, Trump or even just US flags in their little camp. I suppose it's to attract like minded people to some degree but, more, I think it's to invite confrontation and just HOPE that someone like me will say some poo poo about it so they can unload their hardened and well marinated opinions on others.

It's provocation more than anything.

Haha we should team up! Except we live on opposite coasts... And the fact that there's a lot of potential opportunity costs (my wife wouldn't take kindly to the possibility of her and our kids getting doxxed because I trolled the wrong psycho conservative for lulz). And that reminds me of another distinction. A lot of empathetic left wing people might be irate enough to troll right wingers and laugh at how triggered they get. But they're also empathetic enough to know the ripple effects and costs associated with such a performance art. Remember the goon who shot Tiny Toese's Tiny Toe off and got arrested? He had been recently divorced like 2 months before the incident, and I can't help but wonder if he had gotten so radicalized that perhaps his spouse was concerned for the safety of her and her child. Regardless she didn't want a part of it.

But conservatives don't carry that introspective burden. They either burn bridges consequences be dammed (your example of parents whose kids are estranged from them) or they surround themselves with people who don't care or are too spineless to do anything about it. So they don't have those social restraints in the same way, which is probably also why they're so eager to pick dumb fights - most of the time they have a social home field advantage. They'll argue and scream and threaten but they're not worried about 'taking it too far'. Their leftist adversaries on the other hand, like you and I, have to pick our battles very carefully. Not just to balance our own sanity, but to keep our own families safe.

Don't you tell me my business again.
I recently took a job working in a poker room. It's filled with cops and vets. Most of the security are former cops and several of the players have...opinions.

Since I work there, I have to bite my tongue but I have a little fun sometimes rooting against them and watching the lose their money.

There's one dude in particular that really grinds my gears. I hate him.

He's a player and is a former cop that used to work for LAPD. And he will let you know about it any chance he gets. Again, it's his entire identity. "White cop from LA can't catch a break" is a common refrain. Did I mention he was former LAPD? Once in a blue moon, I'll sarcastically ask him what he used to do when he was working and he never catches on. Also makes racist comments when ASian or black players leave the table. He sucks.

He also likes to tell the same poo poo That Didn't Happen story...all...the...time. Usually it's in the form of an anecdote, except the place it happened, when it happened and sometimes exactly what was said varies. The gist of it goes that he was standing in line at ________________ (gas station, grocery store, movies), some other guy was (usually) wearing a covid mask and the cop dude wasn't respecting the person's space. Masked dude says "obviously you don't respect social distancing" or something similar. "Cracking wise" as it were.

LAPD guy says "You know what, kid? You got an alligator mouth and a hummingbird rear end".

That's it. That's the entire joke/story/anecdote. Only thing left out was the part where everyone claps or laughs. He thinks this is the all timer of sick burns and tells it every time I sit at the table he's playing.

Did I mention he was LAPD? He was LAPD. Cop from LA. White cop from Los Angeles. Cop. LA.

Imagine getting pulled over by this rear end in a top hat or having him show up to settle a domestic dispute.

EXISTENCE IS PAIN😬
My stepdad likes to pull those stdh stories. He likes to call other poc "coconut-heads" (which he INSISTED is not racist, but rather his own personal word for 'dummy' even though Caucasian dummies usually get more conventional r slurs as a description of their intelligence). Most of us groan and tune him out, but one daughters in law of his is particularly witty and basically heckles him through the entire story.

:bahgawd: "So there was this Indian coconut head driving next to me, and he honked his horn thinking he's better than me"
:j: "... Because you were cutting him off..."
:bahgawd: "And he told me to pull over so we pulled over and rolled up my sleeves"
:j: "and you apologized to this guy for cutting him off?"
:bahgawd: "So he started yelling and hollering at me in some mumbo jumbo language"
:j: "Among the 4 fluent languages he knows that you don't"
:byodood: "And... Fer cryin out loud Cheryl can you let me finish my goddamn story?"
:j: "Freeze. Peach?"
:byodood: "Ah forget it you probably can't wait until these coconut heads take over".
:j: "So pumpkin pie or pecan, Eugene?"

Weird how these guys never mention how many people the British Empire killed, just in India alone.

Also who the hell in the orbit of mainstream media is praising Mao or Stalin? At least without anybody calling them out on it?

"I Dare."
I so hate that the majority of my friends are hardcore "conservatives" with the full Republican credentials. Past that at least I've known them long enough that they actually listen to reason. They lapse back into their usual shittery the second they can speak unburdened by logic but they at least will acknowledge a solid point and work with it. They will still vote Trump or whoever because they love their team but they can at least understand that helping people who are in a terrible situation at least creates another tax paying working citizen who wouldn't otherwise be "taking advantage of my tax money". It only lasts so long but it lasts long enough to at least change their votes for the state if sadly not the country. I hold with trying to be the voice of reason and you can logical trap a lot of idiots into saying what they actually want and it's rarely what the Republicans want to give. The hard part is keeping them aware of that.

Thanks, that means a lot to me. Sometimes I can't help but think that disingenuous chuds deliberately pick "inconvenient" moments to goad people into debates, because it forces a lot of variables to consider.
Oh, chuds absolutely pick specific moments to their flags fly - usually social or family gatherings where there is a lot of pressure not to rock the boat or get into an argument (i.e. :decorum:).

Uncle Leo knows exactly what he's doing when he starts making veiled references to welfare babies and stupid pronouns at the family Thanksgiving - he does it because he know it causes discomfort for non-chuds, who either have to sit there and take it, or escalate into an argument (and get everybody made at them for not observing decorum and keeping the peace). Either way, Leo gets to gloat about owning his stupid lib relatives.

I'm open to interpretation!
I'm suddenly reminded of a political ad being shown around PA for the midterms that came on the muted office TV. I couldn't tell you what candidate it was for or against, but it depicted some guy at a desk stamping a big fat [RACIST] marker on the photo of some dude. I nearly lost my poo poo in the middle of my shift when I looked over and saw it.

Basically no one ever, and if you really want to try, at least with Mao and Stalin, you can say they accomplished some limited, positive things. Hitler provoked basically the bloodiest war in human history, destroyed his country for a generation, and targeted over 10 million people for outright extermination simply because he could.
