A confession of double dumbassery: A few days ago I was fixing the fence at my sister-in-law's and looked down and saw a big old huntsman sitting on my leg. I'm not that bothered by spiders, but I reacted without thinking and swatted it away - forgetting I had a loving hammer in my hand. This left me with a big red mark on my leg that all swelled up and bruised. Today, the swelling went down enough for me to see the loving fang marks where it bloody bit me. I mean, I had just smacked it upside its little spider head with a hammer, but still. So now I have a big rear end bruise and a spider bite

One of my old school friends is a dog trainer and she and other training schools constantly advise people to avoid dog parks precisely because idiots always take their untrained dogs there and things can escalate very quickly if canine confrontations arise. From what I've read, the dog owners at Logan were not home, which raises the question of why the dogs were not secured while they were out. My dog is pretty territorial and barks when someone enters my property (she immediately puts herself in my bedroom when someone opens the gate). Most of the delivery people know that she is never in the front yard but one particular Amazon delivery person always rings me to come and collect the package at the gate - and I'm fine with that. I don't want him to feel unsafe.

Then the old bloke told my wife to lighten up. Should have pushed the oval office over. I loving hate these assholes but its always amazing how pissy they get when the situation gets reversed, I got some dinky rear end poodle mutt who will just absolutely knock the poo poo out of larger dogs running around because he doesn't want to get stepped on. I had him tied up while I went in to grab some beers from a liquor store one day and watched as some oblivious lady came by with her border collie running around off leash, my dog pinned the loving thing's neck to the ground in about 2 seconds. The woman got all pissy at me when I came out about how out of control my dog was and all I could say was "thats why I keep mine on a leash" lol. Almost every time my dog tries to take down one of these offleash dogs running around when they shouldn't be it apparently is my fault that their dog approached my leashed dog and my dog told it to gently caress off.

I want a dog but I'm single and don't work from home My last 2 office jobs in the USA had bring-dog-to-work policy which afaict isn't really a thing here? Also bar dogs are cool, pubs should let dogs inside. If they're properly trained bar dogs, they have to stay on the stool.

Most dogs are fine at home alone while you're at work as long as you have plenty of time to spend with them outside those hours. My dog treats my bedroom as a crate and stays on my bed when I'm not home. She can easily go 10 hours without needing to go to the toilet. You do need to consider any lifestyle changes that may happen within the dog's lifetime, though.

I would under no circumstances recommend getting a puppy or something without at least taking like 3 weeks off or something to get it settled in. If you aren't willing to give it the attention every day then good on you for admitting it because there certainly are a sizeable chunk of dog owners out there who aren't willing to but selfishly get a dog anyways.

Leash laws are such a joke, just once in my life I would like to actually see them get enforced but I don't have high hopes. My granddad is scared of dogs and pretty unsteady on his feet, whether or not Fido is friendly is irrelevant when it's really easy for him to get knocked over regardless. Even getting people to actually pay attention to what their free-running dogs are doing is apparently impossible. Stopped bringing a treat pouch with me when walking my dog because I walked past a cafe where some woman was sitting and chatting while her dog did whatever, had to walk back the way I came because this dog followed me a good 200-300 metres up the road and showed no signs of leaving. Thankfully it didn't do anything besides follow me and look longingly at the treat pouch, because when I came back and told it's owner to call her dog so it doesn't follow me home she hadn't even realised it had gone anywhere. Her dog had hosed off for nearly 10 minutes and she had no idea.

I agree because some dog busted into my enclosed yard and attacked my cat while i was sitting there with her. Luckily she hosed up the dog but it was unbelievable that a big animal could bust in and attack my cat, and then the dude sprinted off with the dog before i could lose my poo poo at him.

This reminds me of my pet peeve. My dog is one of those "friendly" dogs and likes to jump up on new people she meets. I try to avoid it happening and discipline her when it does but it makes it hard when half the people she "meets" give her pats and affection for doing so. "oh no, it's fine, I don't mind, she's such a gorgeous girl".... Yeah it's not you I'm worried about dick head. Ask before you pat my dog.

Sucks how the worst enemies of trying to get your dog to be well-behaved in public is people who 'love dogs'. They love dogs so much that they just lose all sense of impulse control or capacity for thought around dogs. Any unwanted behaviours are fine always because gosh darn it they just love dogs. I will say that, at least in my area, most people are pretty good about teaching their kids dog safety. My dog is an ageing spud of a pug (obligatory don't get a pug, I do love him but there are plenty of dogs out there with just as good personalities who don't struggle to exist and won't set you back bucketloads of money in vet dental), but kids I pass when walking him will always ask if they can pat him before trying to despite him being pretty harmless looking.

Give me a greyhound or a staffy X mutt any day Truth, especially since it's not getting any loving cooler around here. I got my guy over a decade ago without fully realising that even though he's on the functional end of pug he basically can't go outside if it's much over 25 because he just can't regulate his temperature. He was a planned gift because family thought a dog would help with sadbrains, which he did and does but the breed choice could have been better. Pretty sure he's from a puppy mill, at the very least he's a bit weird - bigger than any other pugs I've encountered, and his coat is a bit longer. NPR Journalizard posted:I feel like pug owners keep the whole "expressing anal glands" thing a secret to let new pug owners find out about, and if it was more generalised knowledge, then the demand for pugs would go down significantly. If this is any indication then I know he's not a proper pug because I have never had to do anything with his anal glands, and there have never been any problems with them. Main problems I've had have been a couple of routine dental cleanings turning into full-on extractions because his stupid hosed-up skull doesn't have proper space for his teeth. The proliferation of french bulldogs around here and in general is kind of horrifying. The number of them that have appeared within the last year gives me 0 hope that they are being bred with any consideration for the animals themselves. The highlight was definitely all the shibes Based on what I heard from a guy who owned a husky and had to stay in a Melbourne apartment for a bit, the answer probably involves multiple hours in the day being devoted to playing games with the dog, taking the dog for walks or out to parks to run around, and/or devoting money to paying someone else to do that while the owners are at work. Or possibly not doing any of that and just having a destructive, severely neurotic dog. There is a guy in my area with an akita, gorgeous dog that I could never handle owning but love seeing and occasionally giving a pat.
