I can’t say I’m surprised this hasn’t been national news since white right wing terrorism is often ignored but the damage is apparently pretty bad going by this live local newspaper updates including the fact their water and sewage system is being operated wholly on generator power to avoid overflows. This wasn’t just some drunk idiots getting lucky with potshots from a handgun

The equipment is primarily steel or aluminum exteriors filled with mineral oil, vacuum, or sulfur hexafluoride gas. There's a lot of critical porcelain pieces as well. It's not difficult to do a lot of damage in a short period of time with a rifle. It happens more often than you think.

They probably shot the transformers. It's certainly been done elsewhere before, though usually bored shitkickers just shoot the ones on poles to knock out the power of a neighborhood.

Dr. VooDoo

Latest update says this was a more carefully planned attack than just them going out and shooting random transformers at power stations:

quote:

Working at the Eastwood power substation off Daubs Chapel Road, Aubin Reynolds, a system planning engineer with Randolph Electric Membership Corp., said that whoever attacked the power stations was familiar with the the power company and how the stations were all connected to each other.

Reynolds said the West End power substation, which was heavily damaged, is a transmission substation, which sends power down the line to smaller substations. Hitting that site hard would have a cascading effect of damage, Reynolds said.

Not this time.

If the perpetrators get off with a slap on the wrist, (considering they're calling this "vandalism" that's a solid maybe), then the next attack will knock out power and they follow up with something else.

Fascists will keep escalating and im not sure where it ends; and as long as everyone treats them with kid gloves and calls the terrorists attacks they do "vandalism", it will escalate quickly.

Edit: it probably ends in pogroms, apartheid by law, or death camps

3 men plead guilty to domestic terrorism crime related to plans to attack power grids

Dept. of Justice via the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Ohio, February 23, 2022 posted:

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three men pleaded guilty today to crimes related to conspiring to attack power grids throughout the United States in furtherance of racially or ethnically motivated violent extremism advocating for the supremacy of the white race.

...

“The defendants in this case wanted to attack regional power substations and expected the damage would lead to economic distress and civil unrest,” said Assistant Director Timothy Langan of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division. “These individuals wanted to carry out such a plot because of their adherence to racially or ethnically motivated violent extremist views. When individuals move from espousing particular views to planning or committing acts of violence the FBI will investigate and take action to stop their plans. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to protect our communities.”

...

According to court documents, in fall 2019, Frost and Cook met in an online chat group. Frost shared the idea of attacking a power grid with Cook, and within weeks, the two began efforts to recruit others to join in their plan.

As part of the recruitment process, Cook asked literary questions and circulated a book list of readings that promoted the ideology of white supremacy and Neo-Nazism.

By late 2019, Sawall – a friend of Cook’s in real life and online – joined the conspiracy and assisted Cook with online recruitment efforts, operational security and organization.

As part of the conspiracy, each defendant was assigned a substation in a different region of the United States. The plan was to attack the substations, or power grids, with powerful rifles. The defendants believed their plan would cost the government millions of dollars and cause unrest for Americans in the region. They had conversations about how the possibility of the power being out for many months could cause war, even a race war, and induce the next Great Depression.

In February 2020, the co-conspirators met in Columbus, Ohio, to further discuss their plot. Frost provided Cook with an AR-47 and the two took the rifle to a shooting range to train.

Frost also provided Cook and Sawall with suicide necklaces during the Columbus meeting. The necklaces were filled with fentanyl and were to be ingested if and when the defendants were caught by law enforcement. Both Cook and Sawall expressed their commitment to dying in furtherance of their mission.

Upon arriving in Columbus, Sawall and Cook purchased spray paint and painted a swastika flag under a bridge at a park with the caption, “Join the Front.” The defendants had additional propaganda plans for their time in Ohio, but they were derailed during a traffic stop, during which Sawall swallowed his suicide pill but ultimately survived.

Court documents detail that Cook and Frost continued in furtherance of the conspiracy to travel together after their Ohio meeting, and drove to Texas in March 2020, where Cook stayed in different cities with various juveniles he was attempting to recruit for their plot.

Even if they're not treated as terrorists, knocking out power to nearly half the county's population isn't "slap on the wrist" territory either. Local authorities are going to be pissed off, without a doubt. And it's a majority-white county known for its golf resorts, so state and federal authorities aren't likely to turn a blind eye either.

The Metcalf substation attack of 2013 was never solved. Apparently such things are difficult, there just isn't much evidence to work with.

There is a strong motivation to find out who did it though because this kind of poo poo costs easily millions just in equipment but then come economic losses from all local businesses who have to close for days, stores, restaurants and thousands of homes with spoiled foods in fridges and freezers, people unable to charge their electric vehicles and go to work... insurance companies will want to know what happened, for one. And as this affects public trust in safety politicians will want to see the perpetrators brought to justice. Which still doesn't mean that they are able to solve the case.

The nature of the account isn't "I'm a lib on TikTok", it's more like "look at all these dumb libs on TikTok, let's all make fun of them". It's basically a "post stuff from people we hate to mock them" account, except there's no "don't touch the poop" rule and much of its audience is brain-poisoned idiots who get off on stalking and harassing the mock targets.

Random transphobes who get mad about LGBT-friendly stuff in their communities privately send their complaints to this person, and LibsOfTiktok tweets it out to their national follower base - who then descend on some random elementary school or children's hospital or nightclub with a wave of hate mail, harassment, and threats.

The Direct Action activists in this case might conceivably get away with it, which is very bad as far as encouraging others, but as people have mentioned above, it's not going to be for want of law enforcement interest. It's just that this (and arson) are relatively good choices for terrorists who would like to possibly terrorism again and/or not spend the rest of their lives in prison.

There was a major attack on a PG&E substation near silicon valley a decade ago. It didn't get a ton of national press because it happened the same week as the Boston marathon bombings. There's a decent amount of info on the Wikipedia page (Metcalf substation), and as far as I know the FBI has not solved the case or publicly named any suspects.

These pieces of critical infrastructure are pretty vulnerable to small arms fire, as it turns out. If you know what to target, you can do a lot of damage in short order. If you know about how the grid in that area is all chained together, you could cause a cascade event.

The Metcalf attack drove some regulatory security changes for substations, but they're not manned facilities so there's only so much you can do against a dedicated and knowledge adversary.

without knowing the manufacturer/model specifics, I can say from experience that a lot of major equipment and specialty substation parts that used to take 3 or 6 months to locate, purchase, and deliver now take 9 or 12 or 18 months in some cases.

It's pretty dire and a lot of things are basically running on temporary repairs and compromised functionality.
