Recently read about this terrible recent incident. Pretty drat bad. https://www.dol.gov/newsroom/releases/osha/osha20221109-1 On June 2, 2022, a 39-year-old employee of a Mapleton foundry fell and was immediately incinerated in an 11-foot-deep pot of molten iron heated to more than 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. A federal investigation determined that, if required safety guards or fall protection had been installed, the 39-year-old employee’s ninth day on the job might not have been their last. I thought brown bears would get angry and kill you if you tried to fight but would lose interest and wander away if you played dead, and black bears would be scared off if you tried to fight but will happily chow down on the free meal if you play dead? Hence the need for accurate identification.

Polar bears will eat you no matter what, but with bipolar bears it depends on if they're manic or depressed.

One of our local ferries has probably killed three fishermen this morning. This is the second of their ferries to sink a fishing boat. From 2011: Edit: for efficiency I'll post this now. ReelBigLizard fucked around with this message at 11:14 on Dec 8, 2022 |

I've been close-ish to a ferry of that type in the Baltic sea in a small sailing boat, they are a little scary tbh.

This is extra funny because the ad on the side of the car says "trygg" which means "safe" in swedish (and maybe some other languages too).

In one of those situations, fighting back is probably a good idea. In the other one, playing dead is probably a good idea. Good luck figuring out which is which.

In the Columbia gorge wind sailors frequently pass in front of grain barges even using the bow wake (or whatever you call that bit) as a fun thing to jump off of. Frequently this does not end well but there is literally nothing the tug crew can do about it other than make a report and try to put down life-saving gear in the aftermath.

Since usual maritime logic says the small boats are responsible for getting out of the way of the big boats, does the sheer speed of these ferries change that? those fast ferries seem like a nuisance since nothing else behaves like they do. if your a boat captain. 99% of the traffic you see is sail or commercial cargo. which both have their own usual speeds and behaviors. Then now you also have this other thing that goes from being on the horizon to being on top of you 20x faster than anything else you’ve ever encountered.

The inquest into the first collision found that they were going nearly full ahead (30-40kts) in fog and relying on the radar and transponders, but there is an unconfirmed rumour that the French boat was running with the transponder off because they were in illegal waters. So it was still the ferry company at fault. Antigravitas posted:Those things go >40 knots. You actually have very little time to avoid one if you are in its path. Todays collision was actually involving a conventional ferry, the Goodwill, at about 20kts.
