Teams seem to be pulling goalies much earlier these days as well so I’m sure it presents more opportunities

Is there anybody in the league more accurate than Ovi at hitting an ENG? He’s probably the best and I agree with the statement that it likely throws off the 6 on 5 offense as they have to account for him at all times.

Its mostly this ya, most of the top ENG by season are from the last handful of years.

Ovechkin leads the league with 5 this year. Guentzel has 4 and is second. Career wise Ovechkin has 53, and is second all time behind Gretzky (56). The other active leaders are Marchand (32), Eric Staal (31), Sidney Crosby (28), Zach Parise (28), Blake Wheeler (28), Patrice Bergeron (27), Patrick Kane (26).

If we're going by rate scoring Marchand seems pretty good at them. His 32 empty net goals have come in 893 games. Yet if you extrapolate that out to the same GP that Ovechkin has then that would put Marchand with around 46-47 ENG, or still behind Ovechkin.

Seems pretty clear that as in all things goalscoring Ovechkin is the best at empty netters too.

Those other guys (except Kane I guess) all being out there primarily to defend the 6-on-5 while Ovechkin is just there to steal another goal from a teammate is probably a factor too.

Kane being out in empty net situations kinda rules since he plays no defense whatsoever.

I think he made a beautiful post and did a great job and he is good.

The Flyers got pissy about the multiple ENGs too.

There's a very effective way to not get ENG's against (that the flyers haven't figured out yet).

That was at the end of game 1 in the second round.

Evans missed the next 3 games in that series (it was a sweep), and 7 games against Tampa.

It’s not really stealing a goal if that’s the purpose. Ovi and Kane are out there to kill the game off with that extra goal scored. Score and empty net with 2min left and you’re almost certainly winning the game. That can mess with how they attack the zone too, so not as worthless as everyone likes to say.

Sure, but other players on the team can score too. They have to give it to Ovechkin or their gatorade next game is going to have polonium in it.

I just looked it up on Natural Stat Trick:

Over the past 3 seasons Washington outscores the opposition 16-3 when they have their goalie pulled and Ovechkin is on the ice.

When Ovechkin is off the ice, they are only outscoring the opposition 21-13.

Ovechkin's GF% when he's on the ice in EN situations is better than any team's GF% in the same situation during that 3 year span. But yeah let's keep him on the bench and have Nic Dowd and Garnet Hathaway missing empty nets instead.

So you're saying the best pure goal scorer ever is really good at scoring goals in this particular man advantage situation? Sounds suspect imo.

That's because the other 4 guys work harder since they're effectively on a 6 on 4.

At first, I read that as insufferable and was going to agree based upon the cards' creator alone.

I wish The Athletic had local team-only subscriptions because I'm really not a fan of the rest of their NHL coverage at this point.

Pretty amazed he made it all the way to Seattle.

Isn't wing depth kind of Seattle things too? Like I'm sure it's a good pickup but man there are some way shallower winger groups out there (even amongst playoff contenders who passed).

I don't know anything about the dude cause I never see preds games but I'm still surprised Tolvanen fell all the way for the Kraken to pick him up. They put Kuhlman on waivers which means he'll end up on the Firebirds but I'm still not quite sure where they fit another W in. Donato's spot maybe? Or they sit Sprong in a "sniper who hasn't quite panned out" swap?

I'm pretty sure they only resigned Sprong because they couldn't find anyone else they wanted for that spot on the 4th line. So this kind of makes sense to me. I can't wait for Wright to get back from the world juniors so he can get scratched for Tolvanen as well.
