That almost looks like a repurposed hospital bed. It looks fine until you have a bad dream and kick the desk with the TV mount over.

I was going to say, that keyboard table looks like the table that usually accompanies a hospital bed; the table is basically C-shaped, with a long horizontal base that slides underneath the bed and supports the working surface with a vertical section on one side. Except this keyboard table looks unusable as it appears to be fixed to a position parallel to the length of the bed, meaning you'd have to twist to the side every time you wanted to use it. An actual hospital table would be a more viable option than this monstrosity.

Beyond that, it doesn't look like a hospital bed at all; all a hospital bed is, essentially, just a highly adjustable bed. The ones at my hospital are fully motorized, both in terms of their adjustability and in the sense that they're battery-powered and steerable; the transporters just have to guide them, although admittedly these beds are probably higher-end than what some other hospitals can afford.

loquacius posted:

Are you actually supposed to sleep in that bed because if so it has pretty strong dystopia vibes and if not it's basically just a desk with a big bean bag chair

Yeah when I googled "gaming bed" there were some other, much more viable designs. For example, ones that take the form of a pseudo-bunk-bed, with only one bed up top and the space below is a little office area that takes up no additional footprint. It'd probably be more valuable in places where living space is limited and expensive, like Tokyo or whatever, where you literally don't have any more floor space in your single-room closet apartment for a desk so it's something like this or nothing. But then again, even that is starting to give me dystopian vibes, and it made me think of those capsule hotels.

A case by case basis then, that’s fair enough. I’ve noticed improvements in Firewatch, Subnautica and ETS2, none of them particularly demanding (except maybe Firewatch in the context of a handheld).

I haven’t actually noticed any performance issues on my end in RDR2 like you mentioned, but i will change back and see, i usually play on a capped 30 and it runs about as stable as I’d expect it to.

So, did you ever bother turning on the full performance overlay, both before and after changing the VRAM allocation, to see exactly how much VRAM and system RAM were in use at any time? That would be a necessary first step in determining exactly what's going on and where the performance bottleneck is/was.

I had a pretty similar setup in my dorm room in college for a while and it ruled then but I would not want it now, and not just because my body has aged significantly since then.

I'm doing that now, and nothing stands out except for the fact that on a 4GB minimum the general and video memory usage is lower, by about 3-4GB? Ofcourse the VRAM usage is still well past 4GB. I'm really not equipped to give any kind of concrete answers as to exactly what is going on.

I'll add a notice to my post about it and change back to a 1GB minimum in the meantime.

Speaking of the nreal glasses, apparently there's some weirdness around the edge if you use prescription lenses. Could you just drop the resolution to the deck's screen resolution and letterbox it so the distortion is just on the black border?

I have no idea why I'm asking lol they're expensive.

I installed his CryoUtilities app with no issues for a little over a month now:
https://github.com/CryoByte33/steam-deck-utilities

I'm so glad Steam added TRIM support by default - his script that turned it on made my Deck feel noticeably snappier after I filled up my 512GB internal + 1TB microSD a few times.

I use mine all the time, primarily because I play a lot in bed and I don't have to strain my neck looking at the deck, and plan on using them for an upcoming flight; basically anytime I'm using just the deck and really playing one of my games I'm using them, otherwise I'm just gonna use my desktop PC and monitors. But if I'm just hopping onto dreamlight valley for 10 minutes to do some material farming for my kid I'm definitely not going out of my way to do so on the Airs . I will say it's more than just the screen size, but the image quality and contrast/brightness of the OLED projector, so it also just looks better, and extends my deck battery life. That being said, they are heavier than normal glasses; enough to be really sore on the nose to wear for extended periods of time.

I haven't done this because I've gotten used to the borders (it's mostly just like fuzzy but still readable text), but there have been other posts doing similar (shrinking the UI to within the boundary of the rx lenses, so it's possible but I personally don't feel like it's bad enough to do this.

Like yes, I would certainly buy SotN again but I'm also not going out of my way to purchase anything on Steam that's just emulated since community emulators are better anyways and I already have a pile of legitimate ROMs from collections on other platforms.

Is there any way to make native linux apps launched in game mode use a dark theme? For example openmw launches with a light theme through game mode but a dark theme in desktop mode. I’d like it to do a dark theme.

I installed it through the discover app if that makes a difference.

Doesn’t matter once I’m in game, it’s just the launcher part.

Having a fun issue with Heroic Launcher's Save-Sync option. On the one hand, it worked great for a good while up until this weekend when it decided to just... stop working. The symptons:
- The original save location is correctly listed but Heroic now says "save folder not found, please select it manually". One problem: It doesn't actually let you change the location.
- The game (cyberpunk) is now saving on an entirely different location. So I haven't really lost anything, it's just that my progress is now orphaned from the sync function.
- The sync function is still working in terms of downloading and uploading it just so happens the game is no longer looking there.

ah gently caress it I think I'll just nuke heroic entirely and re-install (saving the game itself so I can import it and now re-download)

How does WiiU Emulation work on the Deck? Is it easy to set up?

I got WindWaker for GCN working just by dropping the files in the right folders, but I've never done WiiU Emulation. Does it need BIOS or anything?

Wii U emulation doesn't require a bios, but some games will require you to have software updates installed before they'll run. Wii U graphics mods are also a big deal on the Deck, for a lot of the big games people have made resolution mods so they'll run at 16:10 to fill the Deck screen. There's some games with weird minor issues (Twilight Princess HD didn't show numbers when I played through it on the Deck) and obviously Breath of the Wild won't run at 60fps (but does have a mod to cap framerate at 40) but most everything else runs perfectly.

Does CEMU on the Deck require a Keys.txt file? I see reference to that, but don't see such a file in the Deck directory.

You gotta decrypt the Wii U Roms which is kind of a pain but the performance is excellent. I ran through Wind Waker HD and it was a blast.

I gotta figure out how to patch the Twilight Princess HD rom I have. The game starts with Epona and Link’s friend standing in a spring but the water wasn’t rendering for me.

Did you need to do anything special for performance? Wii games are basically constantly slowing down or lagging with me.

edit: Just finished installingcryobytes steam deck utilities trying to get midnight suns to not be a crashing laggy mess, and some games are running smoother now. SMG2 is still the worst, so maybe it's the game?

Wii emulation especially benefits from disabling CPU cores using something like Powertools. Retro Game Corps showed it off in his last Steam Deck emulation showcase, Mario Galaxy runs super bad at default but when you drop down to 3 active CPU cores it runs perfectly. I didn't have to do anything special for Wii U, Twilight Princess HD and Breath of the Wild both run perfectly fine without any tweaks. Though make sure the controller in Cemu is set as the Pro Controller and not the Gamepad or it makes menus not show on the screen.
