I'll give Trump and his team this - honestly, the idea of an NFT collection that doesn't care about verified individuality but instead focuses on theoretically valuable "real life prizes" is kinda genius, in a sick and evil way. Cut off the whole blockchain vs. "right-click" mentality at the knees by just not bothering with it, and instead get the rubes to buy a bunch of lovely Photoshop JPEGs in an attempt to win a bullshit meet-and-greet or an exclusive video of Trump distractedly "signing" your NFT (a thing he definitely knows nothing about and will be very confused while doing).

It makes me wonder if Trump just managed to give the whole stupid NFT fad enough of a shot in the arm to keep limping along for another few months.

With what money lol? Florida might be one of the better off red states in terms of federal funding dependency but I imagine getting with a ton of other states that have no budget to recreate a fake federal agency is kind of hillarious.

What about the idea that Fauci "lied" about the research? From what I can gather, different people and institutions have different definitions of it and Fauci was being honest by using the definition that the NIH uses. (But regardless, COVID wasn't manmade.)

Do you have any reason to believe that he "lied" about the research, other than the fact that it's frequently repeated by conspiracy theorists in support of a theory that's clearly false?

There doesn't need to be anything at all to the idea. It's not uncommon for them to take vast liberties in interpreting stuff to come up with conclusions that have no actual relation to what it actually said. And of course it's not uncommon for them to rely on poo poo that's just straight-up made up out of whole cloth.

This is why I generally don't see any value in digging into the fine details of conspiracy theories - the specifics of whatever "evidence" they're relying on are often so badly and incomprehensibly twisted that it's not worth the effort to decode.

It’s so enjoyable seeing the line where even his own diehards realize the grift.

I honestly believe this and the boring re-election announcement are an inflection point where his primary numbers nosedive and DeSantis starts flexing his moronic grassroot support.

I mean American politics are incredibly narrow and fragile. Anything that upsets the status quo is bad for anyone who takes advantage of the system to win, which right now is Republicans, though you can be sure Democrats would vote against it if they were trying to split up Arkansas into Arkansas and Second, Redder Arkansas.

It's exceptionally poor thanks to a legacy of colonialism and endemic corruption. Would instantly be 51st in most metrics, well below Mississippi. Infrastructure has been decimated by hurricanes and companies skimming money off the top. The US government (both parties) just wants to let the territory rot over in the corner and depopulate rather than deal with these issues.

there are three choices: statehood; the status quo; and independence. for a long time there has never been a clear majority for either statehood or independence, and most votes have all three options so nothing gets a majority. they finally had a two-way vote and statehood won 53-47

but this bill doesn't implement that, it just implements another (three-way again this time) election with what appears to be a promise the results would be respected but i don't know how much that is worth

Meanwhile the most recent DC statehood referendum passed with like 84% of the vote and they've got a full constitution and framework of government set up and ready to go any loving day now. Even the local Republican Party of DC is pro-statehood. But it's a guaranteed two blue Senate seats and we can't have that can we?

To be technical, another option being bandied about was a fantasy "Commonwealth" status that doesn't exist in the constitution but would've given PR all of the benefits of statehood with none of the drawbacks (like income taxes). PR's politics have their own issues which is why there's no real consensus over it.

Supposedly this bill is different from the non-binding referendum in the past. Everything I've read says that if statehood passed, then it somehow would bind the government to follow through, and there are steps and dates outlined in the law when different things have to happen on the way to statehood.

It won't pass simply because the GOP is absolutely convinced that they would elect 2 democrats to the Senate. PR had tried in the past to convince the GOP that it would be a competitive battleground state, but they don't believe it. From their partisan POV, they have a massive structural advantage built into the 50 states right now. Even if they did somehow think PR could be competitive, why take the chance?

In the past, states generally had to be admitted in pairs to balance the current political impact. Last time in the 1950's the partisan divide was mostly racist southerners opposed to civil rights vs northern liberals rather than Dem vs GOP. The racist southerners didn't like Hawaii's cultural diversity and the way they would likely vote for civil rights laws, so all-white Alaska was offered up to balance, and even then the southerners said no until they lost enough elections to where they couldn't effectively deny Hawaii anymore.

evilweasel posted:

Well, to be clear there isn't a status quo option. The third option of "independence with free association with the US" would be a legal change with consequences. They would become similar to Micronesia and would likely lose automatic US citizenship.
