Hey Rick, I call this the White Genocide chord *plays guitar reptilianishly* Its a great replacement for the V, if you know what I mean! landgrabber posted:that album is from 2004 when they were much much less good Modelers have been good for a long time tbh. I have a Boss GX-700 rack unit modeler/multieffect unit from the mid 90s and it sounds killer, as long as I run it through a good cab. The problem was with cab sims, which used to be dog poo poo but have clearly gotten much much better

I have a big digitech RPsomething from the early 2000s, a lot of the specific effects aren't great like the whammy, which is very stepped and not smooth at all. Anyway if you A/B it against like normal stomps or amp tone it sounds like rear end but if you just play through it and work the mix around it it's totally fine. It has an option for cab sim but it's basically worthless, it's a slight EQ change but doesn't really sound at all like a mic'ed cab.

I just got a shim for my Jaguar, can I/should I attempt to retain the strings? Can I just loosen them and keep them connected whilst I do the install? I'm just aware of how much I'm spending on strings lately.

Yeah, just secure them at the nut with a capo or an elastic band so they don't fly around and then loosen the neck bolts. It's not exactly gonna make them last any longer, but it won't kill them instantly either.

Done! Went for a full degree shim, since as it was the bridge had to be as low as it would go to get just about acceptable action. It's now at about 5mm elevation and I can probably lower it a little, intonation is still right as well.

I'm looking for a little practice amp to mostly use with headphones with my bass and guitar. I already have a Fender Rumble 40 bass amp, but it's honestly too loud for just practicing and i'm probably going to sell it. I was looking at the Boss Katana Mini or the Monoprice Stage Right 5w Tube Amp. I know the thread likes the Boss, should I just go for that?

The Monoprice amp will not be the ticket. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have a headphone out at all, and I don’t think it’ll be any quieter than your Rumble. The Katana Mini seems to fit your use case better, but it really would be worth trying a full size Katana. You get considerably more options tone-wise, and it has a dial to adjust the wattage, so it’s plenty quiet. I’ve seen used ones go as low as $125, but more often $180 or so. Well worth the premium. The last bit is I think you ought to keep the Rumble. It’s got a headphone out, and it bests any of the options you’re considering at bass amp duty. I’ve got a 100, and I’m definitely a bedroom player more than anything.

There’s a Katana bass amp line now, no idea how good it is. I assume it’s on par with the guitar stuff, but I haven’t seen the same outpouring of enthusiasm over it (maybe it’s still really early)

The 50w can be set to 0.5w, 25w or 50w. The lowest setting can be set to a pretty comfortable apartment volume with still a looooong way to go, but its nice to have the option if I ever play with people one day.

Perfect little headphone practice thing. It's intentionally limited, so not great if you really like tweaking things, but for just picking up and playing it's great. Has one or two bass settings, too.

Anyone have an Axe-FX FM3? What are your thoughts? I primarily play guitar, but I scooped up a bass a few months ago. For guitar I have a Deluxe Reverb. I could buy a bass amp, but I was thinking of selling the Deluxe Reverb and grabbing an FM3 which should cover both bases. Just looking for some opinions.

It is a pain in the rear end to use compared to a lot of other gear, though. Its intended to be used as professional gear so there are zillions of complicated routing and tweaking options and the layout/UI isn't as user friendly as the Line 6 stuff, ime. That said, it connects to a computer and the editing software makes it more accessible and useable. Its extremely powerful but you'll need to put in some time to learn it. I haven't tried it with bass but it has bass amp and cab models, which I assume sound just as amazing as the guitar models. You're right, the Monoprice doesn't have a headphone jack, so it's out. And I hear you on keeping the Rumble. The one thing I didn't mention was that i'm trying to get something smaller, i'm tired of moving the Rumble around, I want something I can keep plugged in/available without taking up too much space. The little katana doesn't come with a power adapter so factor that in. It's cool to take with me to test out guitars I don't need to buy. The monoprice I got cuz I just wanted toobs in my life. I like to just put a tube screamer in front of it. Most of the time these days I just plug into my mooer ge200 modeler thing for headphone time.

One thing about the FM3 is you'll want to adjust your input level for your hottest pickups before you try putting any pedals in front. I cannot say how the FAS gear handles gain stages in front. On the other hand, you have amazing send/return routing available and your modulation/time effects can all go in the effects loop. My experience has been: Buy FAS gear, sell almost everything, buy more guitars. YMMV  P.S. - Just came from a rehearsal with a sound guy who came to dial in our PA. Since my presets are home-built and properly leveled my part of soundcheck was over just after it started. I am crazy about this tech. I just carry in a pedalboard and hook up an FRFR and plug into the PA. I'm usually set up before the drummer and all he does is bring cymbals.

I usually sit on my bed or a couch when playing but find that I star drifting ny guitar neck away from my body and it causes a bunch of problems playing. Should I sit differently or are there any like cues I should use to hold my guitar closer?

Anyone else use the RockSchool books to learn? I'm using them with my teacher and absolutely loving it. The solo from Use Me by Bill Withers is super fun in the acoustic grade 4 book. One of those that I looked at and thought 'I'll never be good enough to play this' and after a few weeks of practice it's almost there.
