the funniest thing about basic instinct is that it is an insanely gorgeous and well-made movie. great cinematography, lighting, sound, action, the whole package, in service of a ridiculously lurid trash story.

like the scene where michael douglas and george dzunda first meet sharon stone at her house. there's helicopter shots, sweeping views, all sorts of craft put into this. but story wise it's just a simple cop q&a and setup for our boy to get roped into the femme fatale.

Yes, in terms of how it is filmed it's very inspired by Hitchcock's Vertigo

97 seems like a good one. In addition to what xaris listed you also get gummo, perfect blue, austin powers, end of evangelion, spice world and a ton of perfectly acceptable 90s B action movies. Easy to pick 52 of those to watch without getting bored by december.

no mention of BOOGIE NIGHTS on either list, for shame

that is definitely one thing i lose out on by pirating everything is its hard to find commentary. every so often i download a rip with different tracks that start with commentary by default and get very confused for a minute and then like hell yeah

I’ve never watched something with director commentary because of this (except The Wall). yesterday i watched boyhood and found it has a full commentary track, so I’ll probably watch the whole thing again later today. kind of excited to enter this new land…

Man it must be really nice to be so famous that they ask you to do commentary for a movie and you can just get drunk and MST3K it and they're just like "ok thanks mister affleck, we'll put this right on the special features disc"

just fuckin tore the entire premise of the movie to complete shreds

It also just feels like something from a bygone era because maybe this gets like shared on a message board back in the day but if an actor said something like this about a movie they were working on today, it's just going to be A Story. Someone tweets it, an infinite number of Entertainment News sites reblog it, etc.

I think that movies are longer now, because time is being seen as a more important resource. For people who just want something on in the background, a long movie works for the brand holder advantage in taking time away from other properties.

can we really say movies are longer now? aside from lack of intermission, 30-50s had a ton of really long rear end movies

I willl say movies seem shorter by the 70s-80s which was generally around 90 minutes then crept upward again

e: I guess I was legit wrong

On the flip side this article says that they haven't changed significantly since the 40s

https://towardsdatascience.com/are-new-movies-longer-than-they-were-10hh20-50-year-ago-a35356b2ca5b

For something like this you'd really wanna go more specific. Like how does the average runtime by year compare for movies with a budget of, say, $100 million or more since we're talking Avatar.

david lynch is right that there is no commentary track or chapter markers on his films. You just watch the film. maybe he has deleted scenes and some Q&As about the making of but even then there's no analysis of the film itself allowed. just stories of how nice it was to work with David, how david was so nice to hire me...

well yeah. although media did generally overstate its actual prevalence, it sure really doesn’t exist at all on the lower end. upper-middle/upper still does though, there’s a ton of white-flight techy/landed gentry ‘burb cities out in the valley here that kinda mirror it.

speaking of burbs, The ‘Burbs is an even more hilarious example of it not existing at all. every single person in there would be renters now

The idea runtime of a film made for adults is exactly 120 minutes, then 5 minutes for credits

for kids 85, maybe 90
