on the larger, flat surfaces you could start with a really dark brown and the sponge on colors from brown to orange to ochre to pale sand etc, then once the overall texture is complete you go in an add scratches

I picked up a second hand drop pod a while ago and decided to finally decided to repaint it. The original painter did a pretty good job overall. The logos were freehanded and pretty good, but also noticably wonky. Much better than i couldve done, all being said.

I take back what i said about leman russ' being tedious to paint. About 3.5 hours deep and i have about 1/3rd of one of the five loving faces done.

Might push the details a bit further but pretty happy with it. Minus the octopuses this was all down with drybrushing and a pass with an airbrush

Still trying to get fine detailwork doable on the airbrush. I think I need to at the very least go down to a super-fine needle. Currently on a patriot 105 fine needle at 20psi. Very high spread still

I've been holding off buying myself a Christmas present of KT Into the Dark because I knew it could wait and I need to hold off for emergencies. My car died today, 2 days after we finish moving to a new place.

But I have a 5 min commute instead of 35 so I am hoping for more painting time Soon!

I wanted to buy some goblins to paintitems to add to my shame pile but I knew this was going to be expensive, and then it ended up being MORE expensive because one of my two catalytic convertors under my car was a red hot spicy potato when I brought it into the shop, so, what choice did I have :negative:

Anyways, on that note, has anyone painted any goblins recently, I'd love to see them.

How are you going to do authentic green bases if you don't highlight them with Pale Sand/Bleached Bone?

BB is probably my most used paint at the moment and I don't even use it for mixes.

If you want to do fine lines with the 105, you need lower PSI and thin your paint even more. Try 12-15psi.
You'll also probably need to use thinner instead of flow improver to thin your paint to avoid spider webbing.

The idea is that lower pressure will allow you to get close to the painting surface with the tip of the airbrush, where the spray cone is narrower. At that low PSI you need your paint extremely thin to push it out of the brush, you don't want to use flow improver in this case because it's a drying retarder and you want the paint to dry the moment it hits the surface, otherwise it will build up and flow across the model causing spider webs.

Practice on a piece of paper, you can get pencil thin lines from the 105 with the fine needle

Nautiloid airship from epic miniatures.

The files on myminifactory. I did this in filament, resin would work too. I'd print it for you if you wanted to arrange something, but shipping the parts of this thing would be a pain and I'd definitely recommend getting a friend to do it if you have someone in the area

Any need to look at a finer needle?

I have a standard Patriot 105 with the fine needle, and the Patriot 105 Xtreme with the very fine needle. There's not a huge difference in the two of them. I think the biggest difference is that I have to thin the paint a bit more for the very fine needle.
I also have a SOTAR 2020 with the very fine needle and it has a noticeably smaller spray pattern, but I rarely break it out because I don't do that fine of detail very often. I can easily spray a hair line with it. I've used it to paint the teeth on an ork nob just to see if I could, but it's also super finicky about the viscosity of the paint and has a tiny paint cup.

I also have a Sotar, and if I'd had the ability to try it before hand, I would not have a Sotar.

Yeah I can't think of a real practical use for it in regards to mini painting. It's so sensitive to paint viscosity and takes forever to get dialed in it's just a whole lot easier to paint with a tiny brush.
Even if I'm doing fairly small details like highlights on space marine armor, I just use the 105 with the pressure set low.

And I'd reather punch myself in the dick than try to do a basecoat or prime with the sotar.

This is only tangentially related to mini painting, but I don't know anyone else who knows airbrushes as well. Is it safe for the airbrush to spray denatured alcohol? I want to spray something shellac based and not ruin the seals on my Badger 250 or 105 like ammonia does.

After a painting session, it's best to let brushes dry either horizontally or, ideally, bristles down. That way any trace amount of paint doesn't dry in the ferrule. I find that if you're fastidious about cleaning your brushes it doesn't make a huge difference, and I abuse the hell out of my non-detail brushes anyway.
