I know this is extremely unlikely (but then so is a billionaire tweeting so hard he wipes out the equivalent to the GDP of several.nations in wealth in a matter of days), but what happens if Tesla goes out Delorean style and just flat out no longer exists? Are all the cars bricked? When your model s can no longer call home and check your 'no flaming death' subscription is up to date, does it just burst into flames?

Yep, and that's a steadfast of the auto industry. Don't buy cars you can't buy parts for in 10 years unless you have a billion dollars.

With how much current day Tesla resembles a crypto project, they’d probably just buy the tooling for some ancient Ssangyong engine and just call it a day.

Theoretically the base car should function. They share the inherent dangers of any product offered with subscription options. As soon as the company is no longer interested in supporting the feature it becomes a myth.

A bunch of cars were affected when 3G went offline. I can't imagine buying anything new that requires subscriptions or servers to allow features to function properly but that's probably going to be harder to avoid as time goes on. I've never been an early tech adapter but I've bought enough used tech to realize that lots of poo poo breaks and becomes useless over time as tech marches on. I have several smart TVs that the smart functions are useless because the hardware can't handle modern streaming and the manufacturer stopped updating firmware long ago. It makes way more sense to just buy a ROKU because you can add smart functionality to any TV for less than $100 and when it's finally outdated, you can just buy a new ROKU instead of spending several hundred dollars/over a thousand dollars for a new TV. Buying a car with poo poo that's going to break and be useless when support is discontinued or the company goes out of business just seems dumb as hell.

Musk is going to keep cratering TSLA value until he can afford to buy back everything he sold. Then turn around and announce some unnecessary feature to bump it back up. Only it won't work as well as he wants it to and he'll flounder around some more and call it a conspiracy.
