For like 3 years I kept score of every cubs game and my book has fields for the umpires, so I would write them in. I definitely *remember* basically all of those guys but just in the "yeah I've written Sam Holbrook's name a bunch of times" way

Varsho barrelled up 102 and the ball still barely cleared the pen, that's why I'm not too upset about the Astros missing out on trading for him :v:

The ball went 408 feet, that's a legit homerun off of a 102 MPH pitch. I fail to see how this is a knock against Varsho.

Also, Alex Bregman making a living off of the Crawford Boxes.

Someone on reddit did the legwork for us and the short version is that all of the umps that retired sucked rear end

https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/zyfx70/of_the_10_umpires_that_are_retiring_this_year/

the slightly longer version: of the ten retiring, seven called balls and strikes at least five times. All were in the bottom third of the league in consistency and accuracy, five of them were in the bottom ten (of 92) in consistency, and six were in the bottom 15 of accuracy. Foster and Gibson were both bottom four in both (2/1 and 1/4, respectively)

Yes, on the whole.

But have you considered Greg Gibson, the home plate umpire, is forever motioning to both players... and the Dodgers are still celebrating in their dugout?

sadly, hosmer's OPS is literally 90 points better than the cubs' cumulative 1b OPS in 2022 (.716 for Hosmer vs .626 for all cubs 1bs based on https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/team_compare.cgi?request=1&year=2022&lg=MLB&stat=OPS)

Mid-tier baseball youtuber makes the case for 2023 AL Cy Young Award Winner Cristian Javier. I'm a little more worried about regression, walk rate, and other negatives than he is but it also includes the best explanation of Javy's magic fastball I've seen yet. He's a really good kid who's done whatever the club asked of him with no complaints and I'd love to see him win a Cy and I don't think the ASG is unrealistic going into the season. But I do wonder how much of his success last year can be attributed to dudes just having never seen him before, since the potency of his 4-seamer is in its deception rather than velocity. The Phils were baffled by it but those were the only six innings they saw against him all year. And even with the Yankee stadium no-hitter* earlier in the year, I think nobody really thought about Javier before game four and I think everyone is thinking about him now.

Hosmer could be had for the league minimum since SD's still on the hook for three more years of him (lmao) and he's a lefty. I think a good manager could reasonably use him to mentor and ease Mervis into the bigs. Ross is enamored with old players who can't hit for poo poo though so if the Cubs pick him up look forward to 500 AB's for Hosmer and like, maybe 60 for Mervis if he's lucky.

Considering it's two teams now the issue presumably has to be that they've found some kind of degenerative or similar issue with Correa's surgically reconstructed leg that is making people flinch at offering him significant years.

One possible explanation that came up on Effectively Wild is that there could have been warning signs of arthritis or something. Not based on anything, mind.
