Yea it's just unflavored konnyaku shaped into grains. It has basically no nutritional value on its own beyond fiber.

I think it's mainly targeted at people who don't want to eat carbs but still want to eat rice or noodles. the anti food porn of that stuff, at least what I've experienced, is it smells like a dead fish out of the package. you have to rinse it to get the funk off. maybe the process has been improved since then, I haven't had it in a while.

the process has been the same for half a millennium. it isnt some new creature of food science, altho the packaging sure makes it look like it

Yeah konnyaku has a very weird smell/taste that you get rid of by boiling it before adding it to whatever. There's also the grey stuff which has some kind of flavoring added, I think it's a seaweed. Plant based rice, finally.

You can also try freekeh, which is durum wheat that’s harvested while still green. They set the piles on fire to separate the wheat from the chaff

Fake, but excellent graphics quote:Legit, but terrible photo Savory cheesecakes are very underrated as a food subcategory. There was a brief fad for them in the late 90s, and I still miss them. I make a great mushroom cheesecake with fresh rosemary and a crushed-pretzel crust.

Grey konnyaku includes seaweed powder, which gives its dark color. Originally, konnyaku was made with raw yam, so it had a natural brown/grey color from the yam skin. While nowadays, konnyaku is made with processed powder, the addition of seaweed powder mimics the original production method.

cyberia posted:Is this even really edible? I understand if you're a caveman trying to survive you'll eat every bit of the buffalo but in tyool 2023 is there any need for this beyond shock value? Sure it's edible. China in particular likes to eat the more "recognizable" parts of animals more readily than us squeamish burger-eating americans, but I think eating genitalia is commonly done with the belief that it could help the libido. For more practical purposes, weirder and less common cuts of meat generally are less expensive, which can encourage people to find ways to use them. But the way that asia is so positive about the cuts of meat that we don't like here in America means that chickenfeet are a major export from the US to China. https://i.imgur.com/ItTLc3o.mp4
