Is anyone timing these votes? I'd be interested in seeing whether they're sending more or less time on the ballot as the process drags on

A fun thing that was mentioned is that normally the House rules prevent C-Span from doing all of these close-ups on the negotiations in the benches in between votes, but because there isn't a speaker yet, the rules package hasn't been passed yet, so the camera operators can show whatever they want

Nobody is delivering monologues before their Jeffries votes today (besides Al Green but he gets a pass from me) so definitely less time

After Paul Ryan bowed out, McCarthy was the only member of leadership who wanted to be minority leader. Now, he's trying to become Speaker since the Republicans have the majority.

The other "rising stars" of the House Republican caucus all saw what happened to Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, and John Boehner after they wanted to be speaker and decided to bow out for now because they thought it would only hurt their career since the House won't be able to pass anything on its own until at least 2025.

And just a reminder Kevin McCarthy should have been the guy to follow Boehner, but he tripped over his own dick bragging about how Ben Ghazi would be the end of Hillary and had to silently lean back into the bushes in order to let the public reset on how much of a loving idiot he was.

JUST FUCKING TAKE OFF ALREADY, SHIT
I just think it’s funny as all hell as they vote and of course McCarthy doesn’t make it, so then they run another right after it? Are they just expecting it to be like some sort of broken computer that if you keep rebooting it, it might work?

Why not just try one vote per day to give them time to discuss with others to see about changing their vote the next day?

If they hold enough votes maybe they'll get a mystery late night absentee ballot drop that puts McCarthy in the lead :tinfoil:

Why give them a chance to regroup? Keep them out there voting and hating Kevin. They can't swear in a speaker, they can't start up bullshit investigations, and they look dysfunctional as a whole on television all day and night. Wins all around!

McCarthy's hope was that he could just wear them down with the process and bad look and if he just bled 1 or 2 off a vote eventually they'd all collapse. That obviously isn't happening.

Allegedly they wanted to skip the votes today and just negotiate but the HFC wouldn't let them. The HFC clearly are grandstanding and want to keep doing this because its a rhetorical victory for them and show of their power. Plus they seem to be bleeding off McCarthy supporters. While obviously they won't get enough to change the vote it keeps adding to their narrative that they're beating McCarthy.

Exactly. McCarthy has no way to stop the endless votes, as no one is officially in charge; a vote cycle ends, and the attending clerks go 20 GOTO 10 when there are literally no other directives for them to follow. The Democrats and the HFC are enjoying McCarthy's public immolation greatly, so they have no reason to vote to adjourn until the end of the day when they all want to go get dinner somewhere.

Fallen Rib
Republicans have seemed to get so many victories lately by the mere fact that they didn't get enough votes as those that wanted to accomplish something so it is really nice to see this hiccup of democracy actually gently caress them over for once. The fact that 10 loud screaming arseholes are holding up everything and it negatively loving with Republicans for once is just great schadenfreude.

Tucker says McCarthy is a RINO and needs to give concessions (release the evidence showing that January 6 didn't happen and create a select committee to investigate the deep state), but Republicans not being able to elect a speaker is Real Democracy unlike Democrats who are soviet communists that all vote for the same candidate.
