Dr. VooDoo posted:One aspect I don’t see brought up about how the Republicans doing this to themselves is those 20 anti-McCarthy freaks have no threats to their power due to the GOP gerrymandering and voter suppression in their districts so hard. They can do whatever they want, the GOP anointed them god kings of their territories they have no threat of being voted out. That sucks, huh, McCarthy? Also he could've expelled them after 1/6 but was too much of a spineless coward. Reap what you sow, Kevin.

Anonymous house quotes to the political press are just about as non-binding as it gets but are leaning into the "is it worth supporting McCarthy if he's giving the keys to the HFC" camp

So, 21 votes against, McCarthy agrees to meet all those ridiculous demands, and we still get 21 votes against? Sounds like the Republican party negotiating tactics we've all come to know and love, just pointed inwards this time.

Politico posted:“At some point, you have to push back and say enough is enough,” one frustrated House Republican said on condition of anonymity late Wednesday night, shortly before the latest concession offer emerged. “But especially when you have members [in opposition] that had [McCarthy] hosting fundraisers and taking photos with them out in their districts.”

I wonder if McCarthy can try a gamble and call their bluff, announce everyone can freely vote for who they want and if this end up with someone having more votes than McCarthy he'll support them as Speaker, if not then everyone should support him and get it over with? Could Dems potentially pull a Lincoln, find vulnerable Republicans in Biden leaning districts, older closer to retirement aged Republicans, people who seem more into this for money and power and try to bribe them with positions in the Executive branch to switch to D, or to soft ball future Dem primaries? They just need 6 Republicans to switch or support Jefferies or some lesser number and some number of Present/Abstainations? If this clown show keeps going for long enough this has gotta get more possible right?

LionYeti posted:It rules that the GOP has literally no stick to stop this because the HFC is beholden to the psychos that are the GOP primary voters more then anything else. they theoretically do, it's to just toss the negotiations with the HFC aside and go to a consensus moderate speaker with the Dems. this is sort of a nuke option because a) it would absolutely incense the base, and b) it would involve tossing out McCarthy, but it's the one threat they have against them, because any pick like that would give the HFC absolutely nothing

Hieronymous Alloy posted:Does McCarthy think that calling more votes will somehow magically get people to change their vote Yes. I'd have to dig up the story, but yes. e: "Outside the bathroom, McCarthy explained how the votes would wear down his opposition, how they’d come to see that there was no viable alternative to him. He pointed out that the Republican whom all 19 of his detractors had backed on the second ballot, Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, didn’t even want the speaker’s job and was supporting him. “It’ll change eventually,” McCarthy said." He does not understand the position he is in and will not give up what he feels he is due.

This is a good way to look at it, and I found https://ballotpedia.org/U.S._House_districts_represented_by_a_Republican_in_2022_and_won_by_Joe_Biden_in_2020 which lists 2022 races where the incumbent was an R in a Biden district, looks like most of them won.
