What was the plan here? Normally, as I understand, a coup works by, for example, a group in the military kidnaps the president, their leader says they're taking over, the rest of the military sides with them, and that's how it goes. A coup doesn't work by a gang taking over an empty office and taking selfies.

If a charismatic leader was at the head of either of those uprising, they could have delivered an address from the seized building, ordered the military to defend the nation, told supporters to get to the streets. Instead both showed a lack of any planning or understanding of politics outside of its basic symbolic associations (e.g capital building = power). Both ended because the rioters reached the "now what" stage and just got kind of bored of it all.

If you're capable of actually holding it, holding the halls of power is a potent symbol that can rally people your way / convince the military the legitimate government Doesn't Have What It Takes (tm) / scare the legitimate government into fleeing. Immediately getting kicked out like an hour after forcing your way in doesn't do any of that stuff but actually trying is still a prerequisite.

J8 plan seems to have been "kick up enough of a mess that the military intervenes in our favor." It's not necessarily a GOOD plan, seems kind of cargo cult "sometimes there's unrest and then the military coups" without understanding that unrest is usually the excuse taken by a military that wants to coup anyway, but it is, strictly speaking, a plan.

For what it's worth, Bolsonaro has apparently condemned the protests and denied responsibility. https://twitter.com/jairbolsonaro/status/1612242019564548097 https://twitter.com/jairbolsonaro/status/1612242022143762433 Google Translate posted:Peaceful demonstrations, in the form of the law, are part of democracy. However, depredations and invasions of public buildings as occurred today, as well as those practiced by the left in 2013 and 2017, escape the rule. I think it is possible that Bolsonaro might not have been directly involved and it could've been some kind of errant crony or loose, uncoordinated ally. Fascism can be messy like that. Bolsonaro's rhetoric or more importantly lack thereof after the election doesn't seem to be what you'd expect from somebody trying to set up a supposed popular uprising. And of course we also have a direct comparison available from when he tried to pull something similar on 9/7 as well. Going to Florida is also a really weird move that adds a lot of complications to the plan.

A coup is one segment of the existing power structure overthrowing the government by force. An insurrection is everyday citizens attempting that, sometimes without much of a plan or anyone involved having any idea how to actually pull off such a plot. If they don't have the support of at least a major component of the existing order, it will probably not end well for them. i fly airplanes posted:We don't know Bolsonaro's credentials to stay in the US but he potentially risks deportation, so he's saving face to cover his own rear end.
