We need to get a new version of that flying fairy toy, where a tech nerd opens his flying camera on christmas, and then it immediately flies itself into the fireplace.

Oddhair posted:I gotta say, the BMW heated seat thing is a better deal monthly if you live somewhere like Houston where heated seats are useful like two months out of the year versus paying the flat fee to unlock it perpetually. I don't like it, but it would save me money (if I was buying a new BMW). This dude I walk by on the way to work each morning is saying I could pay him $5/mo to not punch me in the face every Thursday. I dunno, seems like a pretty sweet deal compared to the $1000 he's asking to never punch me in the face again.

So, it's easier (cheaper) to build all cars the same, than to build this car with these features and that car with those and upgrading them later with these onto that and those onto this, which also means sending parts around, putting your car in a workshop which takes space and time as they open up a perfectly good car while working on it, etc. It's much easier and more convenient (cheaper) to build the features in from the start and activating them as needed in software. Cheaper for whom? For bmw, obviously! You pay out the nose as usual, and get drm locked out of the poo poo you bought and ostensibly own. Non-humans will feed on humans as much as they get away with. Am I buying a bmw? No. Do I want upgrades for my car? Also no. I want some cheap poo poo that works and doesn't rootkit me on the freeway. It seems that bmw is getting all the perks out of this deal, so gently caress em, right in the ear.

Most manufacturers have been doing this with built-in navigation for a decade. The satellite antenna is probably a $20 chipset so it’s in every car but you gotta pay $450 for the SD card to unlock it. I paid for it in two different cars because auto nav works without a cellular signal and I was doing a bunch of traveling for work in areas where cell service could be spotty or non-existent.

This feels extremely cursed. Someone butchered the original NES legend of Zelda game into the engine from the first Doom game, and then took that and made a VR version. I seem to recall you could "download offline maps" at some point? Maybe using openstreetmap or whatever? And maybe phones don't have proper gps anymore, but google creepy location service, which works by spying on you and everyone around you by sending everyone's mac address to google, I think? Where was I going with this? Oh yes, curse
