Yeah... well, at least they did settle with the others so quickly.

So 3.5 vs. 3.0... if this had been any of the other players, both sides woulda just... come together at 3.25, presumably?

Now the arbitrator has to pick between the high # and the low #, IIRC?

What they should be doing is locking that man up to a multi-year deal posthaste. Framber as well. Guess we'll have to wait till the next offseason to see if either (hopefully both) happens...

Yes, the arbriter has to pick one of the two numbers and can't force a compromise

I guess it's possible the reason they're playing hardball is to try to push Javier toward a multi year deal but I hate going about it this way

It's also worth remembering that arbitration hearings are infamous for poisoning a player's relationship with a team, as the team's job is to basically say to the arbitrator, "No, this guy is not worth the money he wants, and here's a 90-slide PowerPoint deck explaining why."

Yeah Atlanta ($13.5m) is going to arbitration with Max Fried ($15m) and I feel like not pissing off the NLCY-2 in his contract year is probably worth $1.5 million.

Do the numbers at the conclusion of arbitration count towards the tax or is it some related formula the way I think long-term contracts use AAV rather than the actual pay for a given year?

Since arbitration is basically agreeing to a one year contract it counts toward the tax in full I think

Also, don't have a twitter, but to complete the Astros arbitration rounds, they're 2.5 mil apart on Kyle Tucker (7.5 to 5), which doesn't seem good. I was hoping they'd be looking at giving him a 6-7 year deal, not pushing him to FA in a few years. You're ok paying Rafael Montero 11 mil a year, but can't give Tucker 7.5?

That one had to be painful for Schwarber. He hit that on the screws, even with a man being held on first that feels like a go-ahead double most of the time

Mervis had a breakout season in the minors the Cubs are probably going to at the very least see if he can continue that to start the minor league season before calling him up. Dropping him in as the everyday 1b on starting day doesn't buy the Cubs anything.

It's funny because even though he was only on the team for half a season and didn't really contribute (except once and it's hard to overstate how clutch that play was, game saving imo), he's going to be in every Astros team highlight package from now until the end of time because he almost tackled Kyle Tucker after he caught the last out of the WS.

It's a rebuilding team. Play the young guys instead of a washed Hosmer.

Like how does Hosmer getting 400 at bats helps the Cubs in a couple years when they may be competitive?

Because what if you call up Mervis and he struggles? You probably want to send him down if it's bad enough or at least take some of the pressure off of him by having another 1b instead of handing an unproven rookie the full time 1b job because he had a single breakout season in the minors.

You don't wanna go into a season hinging 1b on a guy who you don't even know will make the team out of spring training. The Cubs had 0 first basemen going into this season, that's not really workable.

Popete posted:

Then you let him keep trying to figure it out at the MLB level? This isn't some Adell or Kelenic situation where it's a really young guy getting rushed up: Mervis is 25 and there's really no point in holding him back in AAA. And it's not like the Cubs are going to be competitive this year, like yeah you could squint and see a scenario where everything goes right and everybody takes a step forward and the Cubs surprise ala 2015 but that's an extreme fringe case. Might as well use another probably meaningless year to let some of the rookies eat a bit.

You win 75 games instead of 77? He will be 25 in April. Give him 500 at-bats and see if he can be your future 1B.

What is to gain having him in AAA while a washed up guy who won't be here in a year gets at bats at the major league level?

I don't think any team is very keen on dumping a rookie coming off of a single good year in the minor leagues as the full time 1b with no backup. Cubs won't be competitive this year, it's fine to take a slower approach instead of thrusting a young guy into that situation.

I want to see Mervis, I hope he makes it up this year and can stick but I'm not going to be upset about getting Hosmer to fill the hole for essentially nothing and Mancini can at least play outfield.

the cubs can dump hosmer whenever the gently caress they want for almost nothing.

here's the more important question: did they turn off all the lights at the Cubs Convention and then have Pat Hughes scream "what's that? that's trey mancini's music! what the hell is he doing here?????" while all the cubs stood around slack-jawed and mancini comes in in a cub jersey.

Reading the interview with Correa on the Athletic and the Mets used the same ankle specialist as the Giants who had already failed him, seems kind of weird

quote:

Correa: The Giants used an ankle specialist who didn’t pass me. Then the Mets used the same specialist, who obviously wasn’t going to pass me. He had already given an opinion to another team about my ankle. He was not going to change that. He was going to stand by what he was saying, of course, because that is what he believed.

We did have other ankle specialists look at it and say it was going to be fine, orthopedists who know me, even the one who did the surgery on me. They were looking at the functionality of the ankle, the way the ankle has been the past eight years. I’ve played at an elite level where my movement has never been compromised. It was just a year ago when I won a Platinum Glove at shortstop, one of the most demanding positions, where you have to move the most. But the one doctor that had never touched me or seen me or done a test on me, that was the one who said it wasn’t going to be fine.

For me the uncharitable take is that the Mets wanted to use his failing physicals with two different teams to drive his price down because now he'd be damaged good on the market

But it's also entirely possible they just didn't have the details of the report until they did their own physical because HIPAA prevents his medical details from being shared so they wanted to know why exactly the Giants changed their minds and didn't like what they saw

The Cubs roster makes no sense and the only strategy I can see they are pursuing is to be middling instead of complete garbage to maintain attendance.

The team is shockingly old but not in a we signed guys who had down years but could easily flip in trades if they rebound way. Why sign Swanson and Taillon if this is what you are going to be?
