Cameron has mentioned that Avatar 5 will take the story to Earth.

Ups_rail posted:its more confusing in the world of adult films....the whole milf thing I mean. Jon Ronson once quipped about "the awkward career gap between jailbait and milf". (Ronson has done a fair bit of journalism about the porn industry. Sometimes he comes across as a little over-fascinated by it, but there's interesting stuff in there.) Back to movies, someone commented back in the thread about how the prepublicity is so relentless, that you expect films to be out but actually they're months from release. I see Barbie is scheduled for this summer but we've been getting glimpses and prepub for 6 months now. Similarly Dungeons & Dragons. Conversely, the new Guy Ritchie film had apparently been out for a week and I haven't seen anything about it at all.

You'd be forgiven for it - it was originally supposed to release in January 2022 in the US but was delayed indefinitely because its antagonists are Ukrainian, and now the studio is shopping it around the streaming services while the international release went ahead.

The Gentlemen had pieces of a good movie in it but as a whole was kinda bad. Like it really should have focused on Colin Farrell's gang who all had a fun energy versus the pot drug trade stuff which was just boring.

Out of curiosity, I wound up watching Amsterdam. It was... well, I won't say it was terrible, but I will also say that I would have to generous to call it "okay." It absolutely felt way longer than its two hours, partly because the main plot doesn't really start until halfway through the movie. The script sounding like a second-rate Coen Brothers knockoff also didn't help it. I think the script was also the big reason why so many of the actors in it were so bad. After some people in the thread were comparing Margo Robbie to Anna Taylor-Joy, I laughed when not only was the latter also in the movie, but has a lot of scenes with Robbie. Maybe it's because they were only in a few scenes but the only actors I thought really did a good job were Anna Taylor-Joe, Rami Malek (who does a better job as a pseudo-Bond villain here than he did as an actual Bond villain), and actually Taylor Swift, who probably had three minutes of screen time but I thought acquitted herself pretty well. I also didn't know the story (once it finally started) was about Smedley Butler and the Business Plot so that was kind of fun. The big shame is that could have made for an interesting straight adaptation. There were definitely the seeds of a good movie in here but a shame they definitely didn't sprout. Also, lol that after Joy, David O. Russell took seven years to make this as his big comeback. I was going to say that forget Robbie, Russell is the one whose career is sunk after this, but didn't Joy play a big role in sinking Jennifer Lawrence?

I don’t think Jennifer Lawrence’s career is sunk. She was in 3 wide releases a year from ‘11 to ‘16, excepting ‘15 where she only did 2. I think she mostly burned herself out a bit, but her career hasn’t really suffered.

Is Amsterdam the one that opens with Robbie personally thanking the audience for seeing it in theatre?

Amsterdam is an insane waste of a talented cast, relevant story, and good themes. Just entirely weird way to make a movie. It feels like one of those movies where you have a bunch of tangents that seem like they are all gonna finally come to a really satisfying conclusion but the energy of each thread just kinda putters out and then the ending is incredibly lame. JDW deserves better movies i love him, and Bale puts in one of his iconic eccentric performances. As said Malik does a good job as a weirdo rich psuedo bond villain. Margot I think has poisoned the well a bit too much with her (admittedly great) Harley Quinn so any of her kinda zany manic-pixie type characters just looks like a watered down harley.
