Nemesis gave the Federation a pretty good reason to abandon the no-cloak treaty. Firstly, the treaty has not guaranteed peace, the Romulans tried to nuke Earth. They don't act in good faith. Secondly, the only way to prevent such an attack is mutually assured destruction, ie the Federation needs cloaked ships with a planet nuke that it can send to Romulus in retaliation.

I can't articulate quite why I'm enraptured with it, but I do love the Enginering Team ( and Doctor ) a lot, and the time loop episode - Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad - is one of my favorite episodes of television.

I still mostly like it and it’s definitely Trek, but very much in the Voyager mold where it just kind of exists and has good moments and fun characters now and then but never really has anything to say as a whole. I keep hoping it’ll one day fully embrace it’s Weird Science elements or really explore a character other than Saru and Burnham, but we’re about to hit season 5 and that’s still yet to happen, so  I feel like it’s destined to end up like Enterprise (or the aforementioned Voyager), where most of the interesting elements and aspects it teases are going to be remain half-baked or set aside for less interesting ideas.

It makes some sense that the new state didn't manage to hold on to the full territory, so the former neutral zone was no longer in the border and so didn't make sense. But yeah, it's the Picard show writing, it's just inconsistent rubbish.

I'm a glutton for star trek punishment and I still had to quit Picard halfway through season 1, and discovery after season 2, and everything I've heard about the subsequent seasons just reaffirms to me that I made the right call. I also just hate how ugly all the streaming star trek live action shows are. Like they're technically well executed, but they look so ugly. The ships look ugly, the interiors look ugly, the lighting looks ugly, it all just looks ugly, even SNW which i really really like, is hampered by the same ugly look.

I think that’s what disappoints me most about Disco - the cast and characters would make a wonderful ensemble show. Do I want to see Burnham punch the bad guy and save the Federation for the sixth time? No. I want to see Stamets and Adira track down a malfunctioning doohickey on the ship while Saru has to weasel out of a diplomatic mishap. Luckily we get exactly that in SNW and its great cast, but man are the Disco characters wasted.

Yeah, the problem with Discovery (at least one of them!) is that it started off with a Main Character in season 1. It wasn't an ensemble show like most Star Trek shows and wasn't interested in developing most characters that weren't Burnham, Saru, Lorca or Stamets, mostly. It's moved into giving the other characters more to do in later seasons, but it's still focused on Burnham too much.

I'm so tired of Galaxy Level Stakes. The jump to the future and the burn was the perfect time to retool to a show about rebuilding the Federation, but they don't trust themselves with the premise without having an overarching plot that includes a galactic threat. A fractured Federation that's rediscovering easy interstellar travel after a long time of isolation is premise enough. We don't need to destroy planets and nephews of main characters to create pathos and stakes.
